Overview

Clutch of Ha-Li

Game iconClutch of Ha-Li is an epic ground and flying mount added in patch 8.3.0 "Visions of N'Zoth" of the Battle for Azeroth expansion. It is a nocturnal blue-tinted phoenix — a recolor of the Game iconClutch of Ji-Kun model, which drops from the boss Ji-Kun in the Throne of Thunder raid. The mount drops from the rare elite mob Ha-Li in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms zone with a chance of roughly 3%.

Ha-Li is a pandaren phoenix that flies high above the Ruins of Guo-Lai. The mob is available only during the mogu assault "Warring Clans" and does not appear during the N'Zoth assault. The item description reads: "The offspring of Ha-Li feel right at home in the blue skies of Pandaria, hunting unsuspecting prey."

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rare drop — the roughly 3% drop chance makes the Clutch of Ha-Li a coveted trophy for collectors. Not every player can boast of owning this mount.
  • Unique color — the nocturnal blue hue sets this phoenix apart from the red Clutch of Ji-Kun and other avian mounts. The golden saddle adds contrast.
  • Ground and flying — the mount works both on the ground and in the air. Flight speed reaches +310% with the appropriate riding skill.
  • Available to all characters — once obtained, the mount automatically becomes available on all characters on the account.
  • Free — unlike mounts bought with gold or real money, the Clutch of Ha-Li requires no currency. All you need is time and luck.

How to Obtain It

The mount drops from the rare elite mob Ha-Li in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Several conditions must be met to farm it.

  1. Wait for an active "Warring Clans" assault in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
  2. Travel to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. To access the assault version of the zone, you must complete Magni's initial quest chain in patch 8.3.
  3. Find Ha-Li in the eastern part of the Ruins of Guo-Lai. The mob flies high in the air, moving counterclockwise along an irregular path.
  4. Kill Ha-Li and collect the loot. The mount's drop chance is about 3%.
  5. If the mount does not drop, wait for the respawn (30–60 minutes) or try again on another character.
  6. Once you receive the Game iconClutch of Ha-Li, use the item to learn the mount.

How to Find and Kill Ha-Li

Ha-Li is one of the most inconvenient rare mobs to farm: she flies high above the ground and is hard to pull down by ordinary means. Here are proven tactics.

Attack Positions

There are two convenient spots from which you can attack Ha-Li as she flies by:

  • Cliff near the spawn — coordinates 36.9, 36.3. This is a natural elevation next to the mob's spawn point. From it you can reach Ha-Li with ranged attacks
  • Pillar at the Ruins of Guo-Lai — coordinates 31.8, 44.1. A tall stone pillar that offers a good view and where Ha-Li flies within reach
/way Vale of Eternal Blossoms 36.9 36.3 Cliff (attack spot) /way Vale of Eternal Blossoms 31.8 44.1 Pillar (attack spot) /way Vale of Eternal Blossoms 36.6 37.6 Ha-Li spawn

Classes and Abilities

  • Hunter — the ideal class for farming. Ranged attacks let you shoot at Ha-Li as she flies past. You can also use the "Eagle" aspect ability to increase range
  • Mage, Warlock, Priest, Balance Druid — any class with ranged attacks can handle the task. The key is to take a position on high ground
  • Melee — farming is significantly harder for melee. It is recommended to group up with a ranged player or use items with ranged pulling

Difficulty Level

At max level (80 in The War Within), Ha-Li poses no serious threat in combat. The mob had roughly 1.8 million health at level 52, which for a high-level character is a matter of seconds. The main difficulty is pulling the flying mob, not the fight itself.

Assaults — Schedule and Mechanics

Assaults in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms rotate on a weekly cycle. The active assault is shown on the zone map with a special icon.

How to Identify the Current Assault

  1. Open the Vale of Eternal Blossoms map. The active assault is marked with a large icon bearing its name
  2. The "Warring Clans" assault is located in the western part of the zone. The N'Zoth assault is in the east
  3. If the N'Zoth assault is active, Ha-Li will not appear. Wait for the assault to change

Assault Rotation

Assaults in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms and Uldum rotate every two weeks. When the mogu assault is active in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, you can farm Ha-Li. To track the current schedule, use the SavedInstances addon.

Access to Assaults

To see assaults in the zone, you must:

  1. Have a character of at least level 50
  2. Complete Magni Bronzebeard's introductory quest chain in patch 8.3 (the quests start automatically when you log in on an eligible character)
  3. Unlock access to assaults by completing the "Visions of N'Zoth" scenario

Farming Optimization

Multi-Character Approach

The best way to speed up obtaining the mount is to farm on several characters. Ha-Li can be killed once per day on each character, which increases the number of attempts in proportion to the number of alts.

  1. Prepare several characters level 50+ that have completed the patch 8.3 introductory chain
  2. During an active assault, kill Ha-Li on each character daily
  3. With a 3% chance and one character, you will need about 33 kills on average. With five characters — roughly one week of active assault

Addons and Macros

Recommended addons for farming:

  • HandyNotes + HandyNotes: Visions of N'Zoth — marks the spawn points of all rare mobs on the map, including Ha-Li.
  • SilverDragon or RareScanner — alerts you with a sound when a rare mob appears within visible range.
  • SavedInstances — shows which characters have already killed Ha-Li today.

A handy macro for quickly checking whether Ha-Li is present:

/tar Ha-Li
/stopmacro [noexists]
/say Ha-Li is alive! Coordinates: 36.6, 37.6

Action Plan for Assault Day

  1. Log in on your first character and head to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms
  2. Take a position on the cliff (36.9, 36.3) or the pillar (31.8, 44.1)
  3. Use the targeting macro or an addon to detect Ha-Li
  4. Kill the mob and check the loot
  5. Switch to the next character
  6. If Ha-Li is not present, wait 30–60 minutes — that is how long the respawn takes

Tips

1

Watch the assault schedule — Ha-Li is available only during the "Warring Clans" assault. Don't waste time flying to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms if the N'Zoth assault is active.

2

Don't confuse the zone versions — the Vale of Eternal Blossoms exists in several versions: the original MoP, the corrupted MoP, and the BfA version with assaults. You need the last one. If you don't see assaults on the map, check whether you have completed Magni's introductory chain.

3

Use the group finder — in the Custom Groups section, groups labeled "Ha-Li" are often created.

4

Ranged is your friend — Ha-Li flies high and far from the ground. Ranged classes have a huge advantage.

5

Check your bag and mail — when tagging the mob in a group, the loot may arrive by mail.

6

The mount is account-bound — it doesn't matter which character gets the mount. Once learned, it becomes available to all your characters on all servers.

7

Patience is the key to success — with a 3% chance, you will statistically need about 33 attempts for a guaranteed drop.
