Clutch of Ji-Kun
Overview

Clutch of Ji-Kun is a rare flying mount added in patch 5.5.0 of the Mists of Pandaria expansion. The mount's model is styled as a pandaren phoenix with armor and a saddle for the rider. The mount is an offspring of the boss Ji-Kun, the sixth boss of the Throne of Thunder raid.
The drop chance is roughly 1–2%, so be prepared for a lengthy farm. At max level, the raid can be soloed in just a few minutes.
Why you want this mount
- A unique pandaren phoenix model with distinctive fiery animation
- One of the few flying mounts that drop in Mists of Pandaria raids
- Rarity — the low drop chance makes the mount a standout addition to your collection
- A special ground animation — the mount tips its head back and opens its beak as if snatching prey
- Counts toward mount-collecting achievements
Requirements and prerequisites
- A character at level 10 or higher (to use the mount)
- Riding skill: Expert Riding for flight
- The raid is available on any difficulty except LFR — 25 Heroic is recommended for the highest drop chance
- Weekly raid lockout: one run per character per week
- At level 80 (The War Within) the entire raid can be soloed by any class and specialization
How to reach the Throne of Thunder
The raid is located on the Isle of Thunder in Pandaria. You can get there via a portal from the Townlong Steppes, near the Shado-Pan Garrison.

If the portal does not appear, complete the starter quest "The Thunder King" available at the Shado-Pan Garrison. Once finished, the portal becomes permanent.
Step-by-step guide to obtaining it
Step 1 — Set the raid difficulty
Before entering, right-click your character portrait, choose "Dungeon Difficulty" and set it to 25 player (Heroic). This gives the highest chance for the mount to drop.
Step 2 — Enter the Throne of Thunder
Use the portal from the Townlong Steppes to the Isle of Thunder, then make your way to the raid entrance.
Step 3 — Defeat the first five bosses
At level 80, all bosses die within seconds. The order of mandatory bosses before Ji-Kun:
- Jin'rokh the Breaker — enter the first hall and kill the boss
- Horridon — follow the corridor into the dinosaur arena
- Council of Elders — after Horridon, proceed further into the council hall
- Tortos — descend the spiral down to the giant turtle
- Megaera — pass through the cave to the many-headed hydra
Step 4 — Defeat Ji-Kun
After Megaera, climb the tunnel up to Ji-Kun's Nest. The boss stands on a central platform above the abyss. At max level the fight takes a few seconds — just attack the boss.
Step 5 — Collect the loot
After defeating Ji-Kun, check the loot. If
Clutch of Ji-Kun dropped — congratulations! If not — repeat the following week.
Farm optimization
Recommended class
Any class at level 80 handles this without trouble. Classes with high mobility have an advantage for quickly moving between bosses:
- Druid — Travel Form and indoor flight (once unlocked)
- Demon Hunter — double jump and Fel Rush
- Monk — Zen Flight and high movement speed
Time per run
From the portal to Ji-Kun — 5–8 minutes depending on class. You can leave the raid right after killing the boss if you have no interest in the other bosses.
Alt farming
This is the key strategy for speeding up obtaining the mount. Every character on the account can enter the raid once per week.
| Number of characters | Runs per week | Chance per week (~2%) | Average number of weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | ~2% | ~50 |
| 5 | 5 | ~9.6% | ~10 |
| 10 | 10 | ~18.3% | ~5 |
| 15 | 15 | ~26.1% | ~4 |
Route
- Teleport to Pandaria (hearthstone, portal from Orgrimmar/Stormwind)
- Fly to the Townlong Steppes or use the flight whistle
- Enter through the portal to the Isle of Thunder
- Make your way to the raid entrance
- Clear the 5 bosses, kill Ji-Kun, check the loot
- Leave and repeat on the next character
Tips and tricks
- Set 25 Heroic mode. The drop chance on this difficulty is higher than on the rest (up to ~4% versus ~1% on normal 10).
- Don't forget the lockout reset. Every Tuesday (Wednesday for EU realms) the raid lockout resets — plan your runs for the start of the week.
- Save portals. If you have a
Band of the Kirin Tor or a hearthstone set in Pandaria, it will significantly speed up the trip. - Black Market. The mount sometimes appears on the Black Market with a starting price of 20,000 gold. Check regularly if you have enough gold.
- Don't use the bonus roll. The mount does not drop from a bonus roll — only from the boss's regular loot.
- Keep track of attempts. The Rarity addon will help you track the number of kills and calculate the statistical drop probability.
