Reins of the Contained Stormarion Defender
Overview

Reins of the Contained Stormarion Defender is a flying mount from the ravager family, added in patch 12.0.1 (Midnight). It is a large creature with an orange coloration and wings resembling those of a bat. The mount drops from reward caches earned by taking part in the "Stormarion Assault" world event in the Voidstorm zone.
The drop chance is relatively high by collectible mount standards — around 4–5% from the best cache. With regular farming across several characters, the mount is realistically obtainable within the first couple of weeks.
Where the Mount Drops
Reins of the Contained Stormarion Defender can drop from two caches awarded for successfully completing the "Stormarion Assault" world event:
| Cache | Acquisition Condition | Approximate Drop Chance |
|---|---|---|
| First completion of the weekly quest | ~4–5% | |
| Second completion within the week | ~2.5% |
Each character can earn both caches per week — this gives two chances at the mount from every character. The Pinnacle Cache contains more valuable rewards and has an increased mount chance.
Participation Requirements
Before heading to the Stormarion Assault, make sure the following conditions are met:
- Character level: 90
- Midnight campaign: you must fully complete the story campaigns of Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, and Voidstorm. This unlocks world quests for all account characters who have reached level 90
- Riding skill: at least "Apprentice Riding" to use the mount once obtained
If you have completed the campaign on one character, world quests will open automatically on all level 90 alts.
How to Reach the Event
The Stormarion Assault takes place in the Voidstorm zone at the Stormarion Citadel.
Reach Voidstorm via the portal that opens after completing this zone's story campaign. The event begins every 30 minutes — watch the world quest timer on the map or use an addon to track events.
Important detail: the weekly quest "No Retreat" only counts progress if you are present from the very start of the event. If you join after it begins, progress will not be credited and you will have to wait for the next cycle.
"Stormarion Assault" Event Mechanics
The Stormarion Assault is a group event in a tower-defense format that lasts about 15 minutes. Your task is to keep waves of enemies from the Devouring Swarm from destroying the Singularity Anchor at the center of the arena.
Preparation Phase (5 minutes)
Before the attack begins, you have time to set up defensive structures. Each one costs 10 Stormarion Cores:
| Structure | Effect | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Black Eye | Invulnerable turret with a slow firing rate | 10 cores |
| Shock Pylon | Deals area damage to everything passing through its zone | 10 cores |
| Light Barricade | A barrier that slows enemy advance | 10 cores |
Three Waves of Attacks
After the preparation, three waves of enemies begin. Each wave lasts 3 minutes, with a 30-second break between waves to recover and reinforce your defenses. With each wave, the enemies grow stronger.
Enemies move toward the Singularity Anchor and ignore players unless attacked first. If the Anchor's health drops to zero, the event is failed.
Additional Equipment
From the NPC Xy'dax you can purchase single-use buffs in exchange for cores:
- Cracked Core — increases movement speed and reduces damage taken for 2 minutes
- Unstable Explosive Device — deals cosmic area damage and stuns enemies for 1 second
- Illegal Cosmic Emitter — deals escalating cosmic damage to a single target while channeled
Where to Get Stormarion Cores
Cores are the currency needed to build defensive structures. You can obtain them in several ways:
- Elite enemies in Voidstorm
- Chests and treasures scattered around the zone
- Weekly quests from NPCs at the Stormarion Citadel
- Rare enemies in Voidstorm (available at renown level 6 with the Singularity faction)
- Zone treasures (available at renown level 9)
- Singularity Quartermaster sells cores at renown level 12
We recommend stockpiling cores in advance so you can set up the maximum number of defensive structures during the preparation phase.
Farming Optimization
How Many Attempts per Week
Each level 90 character can earn two caches per week: one for the weekly quest "No Retreat" and one for a repeat completion. If you have 5 characters, that's 10 chances at the mount every week.
Probability Calculation
With an average drop chance of around 4% from the Pinnacle Cache and 2.5% from the regular cache:
| Characters | Attempts per Week | Average Time to Drop |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | ~8–12 weeks |
| 3 | 6 | ~3–4 weeks |
| 5 | 10 | ~1–2 weeks |
| 10 | 20 | High chance in the first week |
Some players get the mount on their first or second try — the drop chance is substantially higher than for most collectible mounts.
Completion Tips
- Use Group Finder: the event is much easier in a group. If few players are nearby, open the built-in Group Finder and join an active group
- Arrive early: due to the quest's quirk, progress is not counted if you are late to the start of the event. Be on site at least a minute before it begins
- Place defenses at key approaches: structures are most effective along the paths the enemy waves take toward the Anchor
- Prioritize pylons: Shock Pylons deal steady area damage and slow large waves well
- Farm with alts: thanks to account-wide world quest unlocks, any of your level 90 characters can participate
Additional Rewards
Beyond the mount, participating in the Stormarion Assault grants:
- 2,000 renown points with the Singularity faction for the weekly quest
- Adventurer's gear — the first two Pinnacle Caches per week are guaranteed to contain a piece of equipment
- Key fragments for chests and other materials
- Achievements: Anchoring the Defense and other achievements related to the Voidstorm zone
Mount Appearance
The Contained Stormarion Defender is a large ravager with an orange coloration and massive wings. The mount functions as both a ground and flying mount. Its speed depends on your learned riding skill — up to +310% in flight at the highest rank.
In-game description: "Although ravagers are often aggressive, some of them can be tamed and trained in defensive military techniques. This ravager guards the Stormarion Core, allowing no one to break through to it."

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
