Contaminating Cleaver — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Contaminating Cleaver is a two-handed axe added to World of Warcraft in the The War Within expansion (patch 11.0.2). It is a massive butcher's cleaver with a wide, jagged blade and dripping greenish slime, finished in a swampy, putrid color palette. The model nods to the mutated creatures of the Isle of Dorn — the weapon looks as though it has fused with the infection carried by its former owner.
The item is level 74 and is of uncommon quality. Despite its modest stats, the cleaver's value lies in its appearance: there are few two-handed axes with such a sickly, organic aesthetic, so transmog collectors hunt for it to complete themed sets.
Source
The Contaminating Cleaver drops from the rare mob Rotfist — a mutated, level 80 creature that dwells on the Isle of Dorn.
- Rotfist appears in the Still Shore area, in the northwestern part of the island, near the coast.
- Approximate spawn coordinates:
/way #2248 30.8 52.2. - The cleaver's drop chance from this mob is around 32.7%, meaning roughly one in every three kills.
- It is a rare mob, so it has a respawn timer: if someone has already taken it, you will have to wait or look for a copy of it on another game shard.
An important detail: Rotfist does not appear in the world until you complete the island's introductory story. You need to finish the quest Secure the Beach from the starting campaign of the Isle of Dorn — until then, the mob simply does not show up in its phase. If you have already completed the The War Within campaign on this character, the requirement is met automatically.
The loot is bound to the group until used, so you can farm the cleaver together with a party and pass it around within the group.
Who It Suits Visually
- It pairs well with swamp- and plague-toned armor — green-gray plate and mail emphasize the slimy texture of the blade.
- It fits the looks of necromancers, defilers, and "infected" warriors built around themes of rot and decay.
- It contrasts strikingly with clean, light armor — a divisive but expressive choice for a "fallen paladin" look.
- It complements sets assembled from the loot of the Isle of Dorn's mutants, creating a cohesive themed ensemble.
Tips
Before hunting, make sure you have completed the quest "Secure the Beach" — otherwise Rotfist will not appear in your phase.
Use addons or map markers to track rare mobs: this way you will learn sooner when Rotfist is available.
The drop chance is high, around 33%, so in most cases two or three kills are enough — it is easier to catch the mob again on different shards.
Switch your game shard if someone beat you to it: on populated servers there are usually several copies of the mob.
Bring any class with good mobility — reaching the northwestern coast and quickly clearing a rare mob is easy even solo.
The cleaver is bound to the group until used, so your party members can pick it up and hand it to you if it dropped for the wrong player.
