Core Hound Chain
Overview

Core Hound Chain is a collectible item that teaches the
Core Hound mount. It is a fiery two-headed dog from the Molten Core — one of the most recognizable creatures in Warcraft. The mount is a ground mount and stands out with its massive model and striking fiery animation. It was originally available only during WoW anniversary events, and now its only permanent source is the Black Market.
Why You Want This Mount
- Rarity — the mount cannot be obtained through regular farming; all anniversary sources are closed, leaving only the Black Market
- Recognizable design — the two-headed core hound from the Molten Core, an iconic creature of the Warcraft universe
- Striking model — a massive fiery mount with unique animation that stands out among ground mounts
- Collector's value — owning this mount shows that you are either a veteran of the game or the holder of a significant amount of gold
All Ways to Obtain It
1. WoW 10th Anniversary Achievement (unavailable)
During the celebration of World of Warcraft's 10th anniversary (November 21, 2014 – January 6, 2015), players could visit a special 40-player version of the Molten Core raid. Defeating Ragnaros in this anniversary version awarded an achievement and the Core Hound Chain as a reward.
Status: the event has ended, and this method has been unavailable since January 2015.
2. WoW 20th Anniversary Vendor (unavailable)
During the celebration of World of Warcraft's 20th anniversary (October 22, 2024 – January 7, 2025), the Core Hound Chain could be purchased from the vendor Quartermaster Reginald at the Bronze Celebration Grounds near the Caverns of Time in Tanaris for 20 Bronze Celebration Tokens.
Status: the event has ended, and this method has been unavailable since January 2025.
3. Black Market — (current method)
The Core Hound Chain appears periodically at the Black Market Auction House. This is the only current way to obtain the mount in 2026.
The lot is put up by Majordomo Executus with a starting bid of 20,000 gold.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Buy on the Black Market
Step 1. Prepare Your Gold
Competition for rare mounts on the Black Market is extremely high. Expect to spend anywhere from a few million to the gold cap:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Starting bid | 20,000 gold |
| Typical final price | from 5,000,000 to 9,999,999 gold |
| Maximum bid (gold cap) | 9,999,999 gold |
On high-competition realms, the mount often sells for the maximum bid.
Step 2. Check the Stock Daily
The lots on the Black Market refresh every day. The Core Hound Chain does not appear every day — it is a rare lot. You need to:
- Visit Madam Goya daily and check the list of available lots
- When you see the Core Hound Chain — act
Step 4. Place a Bid
- Open the Black Market Auction House at Madam Goya
- Find the Core Hound Chain lot
- Place a bid — remember that it cannot be canceled
- Watch the auction timer; bids placed in the final minutes extend the timer
- If you are outbid, the gold will be returned by mail
- If you win, the item will arrive in your in-game mailbox
Step 5. Learn the Mount
Open the Core Hound Chain you received — the Core Hound mount will be added to your collection and become available on all your characters.
Tips and Tricks
- Save up gold in advance. If you are aiming to buy it through the Black Market, start saving long before the lot appears. Farming through professions, the auction house, and daily quests are the main sources of income.
- Consider low-competition realms. On less popular realms, competition on the Black Market is significantly lower, which means the final price can be several million lower than on major realms. A character transfer may pay for itself.
- Bid the maximum if you are ready. There is no buyout on the Black Market — only auctions. If you truly want the mount and are ready to pay the gold cap (9,999,999 gold), place the maximum amount right away. This will reduce the chances of being outbid.
- Don't take the gold from the mail. If you are outbid, the gold arrives by mail. Don't rush to take it — it is safe in your mailbox for up to 30 days.
- Keep an eye on events. Blizzard brought back the Core Hound Chain for WoW's 20th anniversary. It is possible that the mount will go on sale again during future anniversary events. Watch the announcements.
- The mount is a ground mount. The Core Hound is a ground mount and does not fly. Keep this in mind when planning your purchase if the type of movement matters to you.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
