Overview

crimson-deathcharger-mount-guide

Game iconReins of the Crimson Deathcharger is an epic ground mount, the personal steed of Highlord Darion Mograine. The model is a skeletal horse clad in crimson armor — the unmistakable look of Death Knight mounts. It was added in patch 3.3.3 (March 2010) as part of the Wrath of the Lich King content.

You earn it as the reward for the quest Mograine's Reunion — the finale of the long Game iconShadowmourne legendary weapon questline in the Icecrown Citadel raid. It is one of the few quest mounts that is bind-on-use, so it can be bought or sold on the auction house.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Unique appearance — a skeletal horse in crimson armor with Death Knight effects.
  • Prestige — the mount is directly tied to the Shadowmourne legendary weapon and reads as a collector's achievement.
  • Sellable and buyable — being bind-on-use lets you trade the mount on the auction house.
  • Rich lore — the reward comes with a scene of Darion Mograine reuniting with the spirit of his father, Alexandros.
  • Extra rewards — the same chest that holds the mount also drops four more unique items: toys and a tabard.

Requirements

  • Class: Warrior, Paladin, or Death Knight — only they can wield Shadowmourne and complete the chain.
  • Reputation: Friendly with the Ashen Verdict.
  • Raid: Icecrown Citadel, 25-player mode (normal or heroic).
  • Materials: 25 Game iconPrimordial Saronite for the first quest.
  • Time: roughly 6–12 weeks, depending on your luck with the shards.

Reputation with the Ashen Verdict is easy to cap in a single raid run by killing trash and bosses. Primordial Saronite can be bought on the auction house or dropped from Citadel bosses.

How to Obtain

All the quests are given by Highlord Darion Mograine at the entrance to Icecrown Citadel. The chain only works in 25-player mode.

Stage 1: forging the weapon

  1. The Sacred and the Corrupt — gather 25 Game iconPrimordial Saronite, the hammer Light's Vengeance, and the corrosive blood of two Plagueworks bosses.
  2. Shadow's Edge — receive the two-handed axe Shadow's Edge, the base of the future legendary weapon.

Stage 2: empowering Shadow's Edge

  1. A Feast of Souls — kill enemies in the raid with Shadow's Edge equipped so it devours 50 souls.
  2. Unholy Infusion — during the fight with Professor Putricide, absorb the mutation with Shadow's Edge. Solos with no trouble.
  3. Blood Infusion — during the fight with Blood-Queen Lana'thel: after the boss bites you, you must bite three other players and kill the boss. This step needs at least three helpers of any level.
  4. Frost Infusion — during the fight with Sindragosa, collect four Rimefrost Breaths by hiding behind ice blocks with Shadow's Edge equipped.

Stage 3: the legendary weapon

  1. The Splintered Throne — gather 50 Game iconShadowfrost Shards from bosses in the 25-player raid. The drop is not guaranteed — this is the longest stage.
  2. Shadowmourne... — turn in the shards and receive the legendary weapon Game iconShadowmourne.

Stage 4: the sealed chest

  1. Pick up the quest The Lich King's Last Stand from Mograine.
  2. Kill The Lich King in 25-player mode with Shadowmourne equipped and loot the sealed chest from his body.
  3. Turn the chest in to Mograine through the quest Personal Property — you receive an opened chest with five items.

Each item from the chest is turned in through a separate quest with Mograine. All five are bind-on-use, so they can be sold on the auction house. The mount itself is given by the quest Mograine's Reunion.

Farming Optimization

Nearly the whole raid can be soloed in 15–20 minutes: the Citadel bosses have long since stopped being a threat. The main bottleneck is the Game iconShadowfrost Shards: you need 50 of them, and they don't drop from every boss.

Stage
Approximate time
Ashen Verdict reputation1 run
25 Primordial Saronite1–2 weeks or buy on the auction house
Devouring 50 souls1 run
Three infusion quests1–2 weeks
50 Shadowfrost Shards4–8 weeks
Killing the Lich King1 run

In heroic mode the shard chance is noticeably higher, so the farm goes faster — you can gather several at once in a single run.

Tips

1

Every boss of the 25-player raid can be soloed, except for one moment.

2

The only blocking mechanic is the "Blood Infusion" quest: the Blood-Queen's bite requires at least three other players. Call in friends or guildmates for five minutes.

3

Don't kill Sindragosa too quickly during the "Frost Infusion" quest — first wait for all four Rimefrost Breaths, hiding behind the ice blocks.

4

Switch to heroic mode to speed up the shard farm.

5

Always equip Shadow's Edge, and then Shadowmourne, before the fights — without the weapon the quests won't count.

6

Shadowfrost Shards only drop in 25-player mode — check the difficulty before you enter.

7

If you don't play a Warrior, Paladin, or Death Knight, you can simply buy the mount on the auction house.
