Overview

Cruel Gladiator's Storm Dragon

Game iconCruel Gladiator's Storm Dragon is a flying armored dragon awarded for the Gladiator title in the 3rd PvP season of the Legion expansion. The mount is the third of four seasonal color variants of the Legion storm dragon, each of which was granted only to the best arena players of the respective season.

Important: the mount was awarded only during Legion Season 3 (from March 28 to June 13, 2017). After the season ended, it became unavailable — it can no longer be obtained today for any rating or any amount of in-game money. The guide remains useful as a historical reference and for those who want to understand why this mount is still seen on some players and is valued within the community.

How the mount was obtained

The Cruel Gladiator's Storm Dragon was awarded automatically at the end of the 3rd PvP season of Legion to all players who completed the achievement Gladiator: Legion Season 3. Along with the mount, the player received the temporary title "Cruel Gladiator" and the hidden tracking achievement Cruel Gladiator's Storm Dragon.

Requirements to obtain the mount while it was available:

  1. Reach the top 0.5% of 3v3 arena by rating on your battlegroup by the time the season ended
  2. Complete at least 150 wins in 3v3 arena for your chosen faction during Legion Season 3
  3. Keep your rating above the cutoff line until the final reset (June 13, 2017)
  4. Wait for the automatic reward distribution after the season closed — the mount, title and achievement arrived by mail within a few days after the season ended

Rating cutoff in Legion Season 3:

  • At the end of the season, the cutoff for the Alliance came out to around 2600 in 3v3 rating
  • For the Horde — around 2658 in 3v3 rating
  • Exact values depended on the region (US/EU) and ladder density

Why you can no longer obtain the mount

Blizzard consistently follows the policy that the seasonal Gladiator mount is a season exclusive. Unlike raid mounts or achievement rewards from past expansions, which are added back into the game through vendors or quests, the Legion storm dragons have never returned to the pool of available rewards. This applies to all seven seasonal color variants.

How current gladiator mounts are earned

If you are interested in how to obtain the current seasonal Gladiator mount (at the time of this guide — the reward for the Midnight season), the principle has barely changed since Legion.

  1. Participate in rated 3v3 arena during the active PvP season
  2. Raise your rating above the Gladiator line — in recent seasons Blizzard lowered the formal threshold to 2300, but the actual top 0.5% cutoff may be higher
  3. Earn 50 wins at a rating of 2400+ (to obtain the "Elite" title and unlock the current season's mount)
  4. Wait for the season to end — the mount, title and achievement are awarded to you automatically

Tips for PvP players aiming for the current seasonal mount

  • Play 3v3, not solo shuffle — the formal Gladiator and the unique seasonal mount are still awarded only for the classic 3v3 format. Other rated modes affect progress on the "vicious" rewards but not the Gladiator title
  • Start the season from the first weeks — the ladder of the first months is crowded, but the rating cutoffs for reward distribution are usually lower than at the end of the season, when the best players have already pushed their rating up
  • Count your wins in advance — the 50 wins at 2400+ for Elite and 150 wins for the top 0.5% Gladiator must be earned in the current season and for the active faction. Changing faction mid-season resets the counter

Tips for collectors and history enthusiasts

  • Check your mount collection — open the journal and check whether the mount is in the list. If it is — you were lucky enough to play PvP at the peak of Legion
  • Use the mount as a proof of tenure — unlike raid mounts, which can be "finished off" over the years, gladiator mounts confirm an active PvP career in a specific period. It is one of the few rewards that cannot be obtained "later"
  • Historical value — the Legion gladiator mounts remain one of the few elements of the game whose availability is completely closed. This makes them a collectible on par with vintage classic rewards: the Deathcharger's Reins, the Swift Zulian Tiger and the like. If you have been playing since Legion and have the mount — protect your account
