Crystal-Infused Shiv — Transmog Set Guide

Crystal-Infused Shiv is a one-handed dagger of rare quality, added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion with patch 2.1.0.

The model is built around the Apexis crystals of Blade's Edge Mountains: the short blade looks as if it were grown from a glowing mineral, while crystalline growths are set into the hilt and guard. The cold blue-turquoise palette and the "mineral" silhouette make the dagger recognizable — it resembles neither the standard daggers of starter zones nor the weapons of later expansions.

The dagger belongs to the family of "depleted" items from Blade's Edge Mountains: a plain base blank had to be saturated with the power of crystals to produce a finished weapon with a unique model. It is precisely this mechanic that defines the whole story of obtaining the item.

The Crystal-Infused Shiv could not be bought or looted directly. It was crafted from two components:

• Depleted Dagger — a plain dagger blank that dropped from the demon Shartuul in a special solo encounter in the Blade's Edge Mountains zone.
• 50 units of Apexis Shard — the currency of the Ogri'la faction, which dropped from nearly every creature on the plateau around the flying ogre city.

Once both components were gathered, the player used the blank's ability and saturated it with the power of 50 Apexis shards — the dagger "activated" and turned into a finished weapon with the crystalline model.

The encounter with Shartuul was a solo trial at the peak of the Ogri'la plateau: the character remained immobilized, while the player took turns controlling subordinate demons and finished off Shartuul himself at the end. To prepare, the player needed to obtain a Darkrune — it was awarded for completing the quest Banish the Demons at the Legion camps in Blade's Edge Mountains. The rune itself served as the key to starting the fight.

Important: the Shartuul solo encounter and its associated chain were removed from the game with the rework of Outland in the Cataclysm expansion. The Depleted Dagger no longer drops, so the Crystal-Infused Shiv is unobtainable on modern servers by ordinary means. The appearance can only be seen and applied if the item was obtained before the content was removed and has been preserved in the character's collection, bank, or bags. On classic The Burning Crusade-era servers, the weapon can still be obtained the standard way.

Another important detail: both the Depleted Dagger and the Crystal-Infused Shiv itself were not bound on pickup, so historically they were actively bought and sold at the auction house. If a Depleted Dagger remains on your old characters, it can still be awakened — all you need is 50 Apexis shards; the shards themselves are no longer farmed in the modern game, but are sometimes found in players' bank slots.

The dagger itself has no color recolor of its own — it is the only dagger in the line. If you specifically want a dagger with a crystalline theme, the closest-in-spirit option will have to be sought among later weapons with mineral and gem models: there is no direct analog of the same model in the game.
