Overview

Cudgel of Mortality's Chains

Game iconCudgel of Mortality's Chains is an epic one-handed mace from the Shadowlands expansion, added in patch 9.2. It is a massive crushing club styled after the servants of the Maw: a dark frame wrapped in heavy chains and shackles, which plays directly off the item's name. Thematically, the weapon echoes the necromancers of Zereth Mortis and the imagery of a soul prison.

The mace suits any class that wields a one-handed blunt weapon: warriors, paladins, shamans, druids, and monks. Thanks to its grim bony silhouette and chain motif, the item is favored for dark, necromantic, and knightly looks.

Source

The Cudgel of Mortality's Chains drops from the rare enemy Reanimatrox Marzan — an elite undead of level 63 that dwells in Zereth Mortis.

  • Reanimatrox Marzan is one of three dune rares that spawn in turn in the desert part of Zereth Mortis. Only one of the trio is active at a time.
  • When the rare surfaces, a marker lights up on the zone map. Until then, you have to summon it by clearing the surrounding mobs in the sands.
  • The chance to get the mace from a single kill is around 1.3%. There is no attempt limit: you can farm the rare every time it appears.
  • The item is bind on pickup, so it cannot be passed to another character — farm it on whoever actually wants the appearance.
  • Killing Reanimatrox Marzan counts toward the achievement Dune Dominance, which requires you to defeat all three dune rares of the zone.

Who It Suits Visually

  • The chain-and-shackle motif makes the mace fitting for jailer and Maw-servant looks — it pairs well with Shadowlands-era gear.
  • The dark bony silhouette matches plate sets in a black-and-gray palette — for a death knight or a grim paladin, for example.
  • The heavy necromantic club swaps the usual nature tones of shamans and druids for something more somber.
  • The one-handed format leaves the off hand free for a shield or tome, so the mace pairs nicely with a dark-colored shield.
  • It contrasts with light cloth and leather sets — a divisive but striking accent for a dark healer's look.

Tips

1

Before the hunt, check whether one of the dune trio is currently active: the marker on the Zereth Mortis map shows who has surfaced.

2

If the rare is not on the map, speed up its appearance by clearing mobs in the sands around its spawn point.

3

Bring a character with fast travel: each cycle keeps the rare available for a limited time, and it is important to arrive in time.

4

The drop chance is low, around 1.3%, so go for the kill on every appearance — there is no attempt limit.

5

Farm the Scythe of the Apex Despoiler and the Staff of Broken Rings from the neighboring rares in parallel, so the same runs also complete the Dune Dominance achievement.

6

Unlock flying in Zereth Mortis ahead of time through the local campaign — that makes the trip to the spawn point noticeably shorter.

7

The mace is bind on pickup, so it makes sense to farm it right away on the character you plan to wear the transmog on.
