Overview

Cursed Pickaxe

Game iconCursed Pickaxe is a one-handed axe-pickaxe from The War Within expansion, listed as a rare treasure of the Ringing Deeps zone. By weapon type it is a one-handed axe, so only classes able to wield axes will be able to use it for transmog.

The main highlight is not the model itself, but its effect. While the pickaxe sits in your bags, is equipped, or is selected as a transmog appearance, your character is periodically "struck by the curse": you transform into a kobold for 20 seconds. The transformation triggers roughly once every 5 minutes and requires no input — it is a passive cosmetic effect, and that is what makes the item a collectible.

The model itself is a massive metal head decorated with ancient runes: according to the description, the engraving flows smoothly toward the handle, and closer to the pommel the patterns grow ever more chaotic before finally degenerating into illegible scratches. The cold steely-gray tone with rune glow betrays the dwarven, earthen theme of the region.

Source

This is not a mob drop or a vendor reward, but a treasure container that you need to find and pick up by hand.

  • The pickaxe lies in the Taelloch mine in the southeast of the Ringing Deeps, at coordinates around /way 58.9 63.1.
  • The most convenient way into the mine is from the side of Camp Murrok — there is an entrance on both sides of the camp.
  • Inside, the item rests on top of a large boulder; you can spot it as a glowing container.
  • It is picked up once per character; there is no need to farm it again — it is a one-time treasure.
  • The content belongs to The War Within, the recommended zone level is 73–75, but at max level 90 reaching the treasure is trivial.
  • Picking up the pickaxe counts toward the Treasures of The Ringing Deeps achievement, so you will also make progress on the zone's collection achievement.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It harmonizes with dwarven and earthen sets in stony-gray and bronze tones — the rune glow of the head supports the "underground" theme.
  • It suits the looks of miners, prospectors and smiths, especially paired with cloth and leather "working" sets.
  • It looks good in sets with rune and earthy motifs from The War Within.
  • It contrasts with bright magical sets — here the pickaxe looks like a deliberately crude, "everyday" tool.

Tips

1

The transformation-into-a-kobold effect triggers even if the pickaxe is simply sitting in your bags — you do not have to keep it equipped for the cosmetic.

2

The transformation lasts about 20 seconds and repeats roughly once every 5 minutes; you cannot control it manually.

3

Only classes with axe proficiency can take the pickaxe — for the rest it will not fit into the weapon slot for transmog.

4

Pick up the treasure along with clearing the rest of the zone's caches — that way you will close out the Treasures of The Ringing Deeps achievement in a single run.

5

If the transformation effect gets in the way in combat or in screenshots, simply remove the appearance or take the pickaxe out of your bags.

6

The easiest way to reach the Taelloch mine is through Camp Murrok: there is an entrance to the mine on both of its sides.
