Get Reins of the Dark War Talbuk mount
Overview

Reins of the Dark War Talbuk is an epic ground mount featuring a unique model of a dark talbuk clad in war armor. The mount was added in The Burning Crusade expansion and is purchased with special PvP tokens in the Halaa zone — a capturable settlement in the center of Nagrand (Outland). Despite the age of the content, the Dark War Talbuk remains a rare and prestigious mount thanks to its non-trivial acquisition method.
Why You Want This Mount
- Rarity — few players are willing to grind the specific PvP tokens in an outdated zone, so the mount is rarely seen
- Unique model — a dark talbuk in heavy war armor looks striking and stands apart from the regular talbuks available through reputation
- Collection value — it counts toward your overall mount tally for collector achievements
- It adapts to your riding skill — the speed depends on your current skill level
Mount Source
The Dark War Talbuk is purchased from PvP vendors in the settlement of Halaa (Nagrand, Outland). The vendor is available only when your faction controls Halaa:
Cost
| Currency | Amount |
|---|---|
| 100 | |
| 20 |
Requirements
- A character of any level (The Burning Crusade content; at level 90 the entire zone is cleared with ease)
- Access to Outland — via the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands or a portal from your capital
- Your faction must control Halaa at the moment you buy the mount and turn in the research token quests
How to Reach Halaa
- Head to Shattrath (Outland) — accessible via the portal in your faction's capital
- From Shattrath, fly west into Nagrand
- Halaa is located in the center of the zone on an elevation — coordinates:
/way Nagrand 41.2 44.3 Halaa - The settlement is a floating island with bridges — climb up to the central platform
- The mount vendor is located in one of the buildings on the island
Important: if the enemy faction controls Halaa, your faction's vendor will be absent. You need to wait for a recapture or take the town yourself.
How to Obtain the Tokens
Halaa Battle Tokens (100)
Halaa Battle Tokens are awarded for killing enemy-faction players in the Halaa zone. This is the main difficulty in obtaining the mount, since the zone has long been unpopular for PvP.
Ways to obtain Battle Tokens:
1. Garrison mission "Lok-rath's Secrets" (recommended method)
- Lok'rath's Secrets — a rare garrison mission from the Warlords of Draenor expansion
- Reward: 100 Battle Tokens and 40 Research Tokens — enough to buy the mount
- Required: a garrison in Draenor and a follower of level 98+
- The mission lasts 1 hour and costs 10 garrison resources
- The mission appears randomly — check the command table regularly
2. Farming with a friend of the opposite faction
- Find a friend or a second account with a character of the opposite faction
- One player kills the other in the Halaa zone, the second resurrects at the graveyard and repeats
- Capture Halaa for the killer's faction — then the victim will resurrect right at the Halaa graveyard, which speeds up the process
- Even with resurrection sickness present, tokens are still awarded
- Earning 100 tokens this way takes about 1–2 hours
3. Waiting for PvP activity
- On some servers, players periodically stage PvP battles for Halaa for the sake of achievements and tokens
- Check gaming communities and the group-finder chat
Halaa Research Tokens (20)
Halaa Research Tokens are obtained by turning in the quest "Oshu'gun Crystal Powder" to Chief Researcher Kartos in Halaa.
How to farm:
- Kill mobs (ogres and other creatures) all across Nagrand
- They drop
Oshu'gun Crystal Powder Sample — drop chance around 6% - Collect 10 samples and turn in the quest in Halaa — you receive 1 Research Token
- For 20 tokens you need 200 powder samples
- At level 80 the mobs die instantly — farming 200 samples takes roughly 30–60 minutes
Important: the powder turn-in quest is available only when your faction controls Halaa.
Step-by-Step Acquisition Guide
Optimal Route (via the garrison mission)
- If you don't have a garrison in Draenor — head to Draenor and complete the introductory quest chain to build the garrison (takes 20–30 minutes)
- Level up the garrison and recruit followers of level 98+
- Check the command table daily for the "Lok-rath's Secrets" mission
- When the mission appears — send a follower and wait 1 hour
- Claim the reward: 100 Battle Tokens and 40 Research Tokens
- Head to Halaa (Nagrand, Outland) — make sure your faction controls the town
- Find the vendor (Coreiel for the Horde or Aldraan for the Alliance)
- Buy the Reins of the Dark War Talbuk for 100 Battle and 20 Research Tokens
Alternative Route (manual farming)
- Head to Halaa (Nagrand, Outland)
- If Halaa is not under your faction's control — capture the town: destroy the guards and hold out until control switches
- Farming Research Tokens: kill ogres all across Nagrand, collect Oshu'gun powder (200 samples), turn in 10 at a time to Chief Researcher Kartos
- Farming Battle Tokens: find a friend or a second account of the opposite faction and arrange a kill exchange in the Halaa zone (100 kills)
- Buy the mount from the vendor
Capturing Halaa
Halaa is a PvP zone whose control passes between factions. To capture the town:
- Destroy 15 Halaa Guards — they patrol the bridges and the town's territory
- After all guards are destroyed, the capture timer begins
- Use wyvern bombs — near Halaa there are points with flying mounts from which you can bomb the guards
- At level 80 the guards pose no threat at all and die in a couple of hits
Tips and Tricks
- The garrison mission is the best method. If you're in no hurry, just log in once a day and check the command table. The "Lok-rath's Secrets" mission grants all the necessary tokens at once.
- Time of day matters. If you need to control Halaa, choose off-peak hours (early morning, late night), when you're less likely to run into enemy-faction players.
- Don't forget the second mount. The vendor also sells the
Reins of the Dark Riding Talbuk for 70 Battle and 15 Research Tokens. If you're already here — collect tokens for both mounts at once. - Class doesn't matter. At level 90 any class instantly dispatches the mobs of Nagrand and the guards of Halaa.
- Garrison addon. Install an addon like Master Plan or Garrison Mission Manager — it will notify you when rare missions appear, including "Lok-rath's Secrets."
- Powder farming. The best spots for farming Oshu'gun Crystal Powder Samples are the ogre camps in the south and southwest of Nagrand. The ogres there are densely packed and respawn quickly.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
