Get Darkened Vombata mount
Overview

Darkened Vombata is a ground mount from the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion, crafted through the Protoform Synthesis system in Zereth Mortis. The mount was added to the game with the release of patch 9.2 "Eternity's End" in February 2022 and belongs to the category of crafted mounts that require collecting a schematic and rare components.
Vombatas are massive four-legged digging beasts that dwell in Zereth Mortis. They resemble a cross between a turtle and a tapir, with powerful legs and rounded bodies covered in crystalline growths. The Darkened Vombata is a variant painted in gloomy dark tones: its coloring resembles creatures twisted by the influence of the Maw, though the animal's temperament remains calm and friendly.
Why You Want This Mount
- Unique model — the
Darkened Vombata has a dark coloring that sets it apart from the other vombatas of Zereth Mortis - Collector's achievements — the mount counts toward achievement progress for collecting protoform crafted mounts and for your overall number of mounts
- Rarity of the schematic —
Schematic: Darkened Vombata is located in a hard-to-reach spot, making owning it a point of pride - Exploring Zereth Mortis — the search for the schematic introduces you to the Sepulcher of the First Ones area and the protoform synthesis system
- No luck factor when crafting — unlike mounts from raid bosses, here you are guaranteed to receive the mount after gathering the materials
- Works at any riding level — the mount scales to your riding skill and is available immediately after creation
How to Obtain
Darkened Vombata is crafted at the Cypher of the First Ones interface in Zereth Mortis. To do this, you need to unlock the protoform synthesis system, find the schematic, and gather all the required components.
Step 1. Gain access to Zereth Mortis
- Reach level 60 and complete the Shadowlands introductory campaign
- Progress to the end of the second chapter of the patch 9.1 campaign in Korthia
- Begin the patch 9.2 campaign and gain access to Zereth Mortis
Step 2. Unlock protoform synthesis
- Complete chapters 1–3 of the Zereth Mortis campaign up to the story branch involving the Enlightened and Pocopoc
- Receive the quest Bound by Zereth Mortis, which opens the Automa interface
- After completing the quest, you'll gain the ability to craft basic pets and mounts through the protoform synthesis system
Step 3. Find the schematic
Schematic: Darkened Vombata is located in a cage suspended on a tall cliff in the Sepulcher of the First Ones area of Zereth Mortis. The exact cage coordinates are: 64.1, 35.6.
Ways to reach the cage:
- Flying — the simplest option. If you have unlocked the flying ability in Zereth Mortis, just fly up to the cage and open it
- Goblin glider — use the
Goblin Glider Kit, jumping off a nearby cliff at roughly 63.4, 36.5 - Door of Shadows — if your character is part of the Venthyr covenant, use the
Door of Shadows ability to teleport to the cage - Cypher gear upgrades — a number of talents and bonuses from Zereth Mortis equipment grant extra mobility, which helps reach the target without flying
Interact with the object inside the cage — the needed schematic will drop from it. If the schematic is missing, try logging onto a different realm: the object may be tied to the world state of a specific shard.
Step 4. Gather the components
To create the
Darkened Vombata you will need:
- 450 ×
Particle of Creation — drop from all mobs and resource nodes in Zereth Mortis - 1 ×
Mawmetal Bridle — contained in Olea's Cache, which is purchased from the vendor Olea Manu for 700 Cyphers of the First Ones or drops from chests and quests of Zereth Mortis - 1 ×
Vombata Lattice — a special "lattice" item obtained from chests and world quests of Zereth Mortis that sets the creature type for crafting
Step 5. Create the mount
- Head to the Forge of Afterlives in the center of Zereth Mortis
- Open the protoform synthesis interface and select the "Mounts" tab
- Choose the
Darkened Vombata from the list of learned schematics - Confirm the craft — the components will be consumed and the mount will appear in your bag
- Use the item to add the mount to your mount collection
Requirements
Mandatory conditions
- A character of level 60 or higher
- Completion of the Shadowlands introductory campaign and entry into Oribos
- Progress to the end of chapter 2 of the patch 9.1 campaign in Korthia
- Access to Zereth Mortis and an unlocked Forge of Afterlives
- A learned
Schematic: Darkened Vombata - The
Apprentice Riding skill or higher to use the mount
Tips
Combine farming with daily quests —
Particles of Creation drop from all mobs in Zereth Mortis, so you'll naturally accumulate the needed 450 just by completing world quests and zone events
Unlock flying first — without flying in Zereth Mortis it's harder to reach the cage with the schematic. Invest Cyphers of the First Ones into upgrades that unlock the flying ability, and you'll save a lot of time on accessing the mount and other rewards
Check the cage when you arrive — if there's no Protoform Schematic in the cage, try relogging or switching to a different realm, since protoform objects can be tied to a specific shard's state
Stockpile
Vombata Lattices — these items are used for several mounts. By saving lattices in advance, you can craft several vombata mounts at once
Don't waste Cyphers of the First Ones — the
Mawmetal Bridle costs 700 cyphers, so plan your purchases and don't spend the currency on low-value goods until you've acquired the needed components
Learn all the zone's schematics at once — while near the Darkened Vombata's cage, it's worth checking out the neighboring cages of the Sepulcher of the First Ones: they hold schematics for other crafted mounts and pets, saving you future trips
Check the chests and treasures of Zereth Mortis — the Vombata Lattice and Mawmetal Bridle can sometimes be obtained from the zone's chests and quests, letting you save on vendor purchases
