Get Dirge
Overview

Dirge is an epic one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a short blade with a stern silhouette and no decorative excess: a compact edge and a tidy hilt make it a restrained, "working" weapon rather than a ceremonial artifact. The item class is dagger, so it suits every specialization that uses this weapon type: rogues, druids, mages, warlocks, priests, shamans, and demon hunters.
The dagger's main distinction is not its model but its place in the game's history. In late 2007 and throughout 2008, the link to Dirge was mass-pasted into trade chat: players swapped its name into words within well-known phrases and slogans as a joke. This turned into one of the most recognizable in-game memes in World of Warcraft, and for many veterans the item itself is associated precisely with spam in the general channels. For a transmogrification collector this is historical value: a dagger with a reputation of its own.
In terms of game stats this is a low-level weapon — it can be worn from level 27 — but in transmogrification the parameters do not matter. All that counts is that the dagger's appearance unlocks in the appearance collection once the item is obtained.
Source
Dirge cannot be looted from a boss or bought from a vendor — it is forged by a blacksmith. This is a typical crafted epic of The Burning Crusade era.
Profession and skill. It is created through the Blacksmithing profession. Crafting it requires a Blacksmithing skill of 365 — the profession cap in The Burning Crusade. The blacksmith's specialization does not matter: the recipe is not tied to either weaponsmiths or armorsmiths, and the finished dagger requires no profession to wield.
Recipe. The skill is granted by
Plans: Dirge — an epic recipe. The plans are not sold by vendors: this is random world loot in Outland. It can drop from nearly any mob in the zones of Outland and in the dungeons of that period, so deliberately farming a specific spot is pointless. The most reliable way to obtain the recipe today is to buy it at the auction house or to commission a finished dagger from a blacksmith who has already learned the plans.
Reagents. A single forging requires:
Khorium Bar — 10 units.
Felsteel Bar — 10 units.
Primal Might — 8 units.
Primal Nether — 2 units.
The entire reagent set belongs to The Burning Crusade. Primal Might is the most labor-intensive component: alchemists obtain it through a daily transmute, and eight units are needed to craft the dagger. Primal Nether is acquired in the dungeons of that expansion. If you do not have your own blacksmith, the easiest approach is to gather the materials yourself and hand them to a crafter for forging, or to buy the finished item outright.
Binding. The finished dagger binds when equipped, so you can freely buy it at the auction house or accept it from another player, then unlock the appearance in your collection.
Alternatives
Dirge has no color variations (recolors) — it is a standalone model with no recolored versions. From the same set of The Burning Crusade blacksmithing epics, forged from randomly dropped plans, a kindred weapon of a different type is worth noting:
Item | Type | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One-handed dagger | Blacksmithing 365 | |
| One-handed sword | Blacksmithing | |
| Two-handed axe | Blacksmithing |
These examples do not repeat the dagger's silhouette, but they belong to the same era and crafting line, so they fit well if you are assembling a weapon set in The Burning Crusade style. If, however, you specifically want a similarly shaped blade, look toward short daggers of a plain silhouette without flashy effects — there are many in the game, and finding a match for Dirge is not difficult.
Who It Suits Visually
- Suits stern, "practical" looks: the restrained blade shape pairs well with dark rogue leather sets without bright glows.
- Harmonizes with steel and gray-metallic armor sets of The Burning Crusade era — the dagger does not steal attention and works as a neutral accent.
- Fitting in sets themed around Outland and corrupted metal — by origin the blade is forged from the same materials as armor of that period.
- A debatable but meaningful choice for looks with a "historical" subtext: veterans recognize the meme item in this dagger, and the very fact of wearing it becomes a reference.
- Not suited for bright, glowing, or richly ornamented sets — against them the plain model will be lost.
Tips
The plans drop randomly across all of Outland, with no tie to a specific mob or dungeon, so farming a "right spot" does not work — count on luck or the auction house.
If the recipe is expensive at the auction house, it can be cheaper to commission the forging from a blacksmith who has already learned the plans: you pay only for the labor and reagents.
Gathering the reagents yourself and handing them to a blacksmith is almost always more profitable than buying the finished dagger outright — the forging markup is usually small.
The tightest reagent by availability is Primal Might: eight units per forging, and alchemists make it through a daily transmute. Budget time for gathering or buying it.
The finished dagger binds only when equipped, so feel free to buy it at the auction house if someone has listed an already forged copy.
To unlock the appearance it is enough to obtain the item in your inventory once and apply it to your character — after that the dagger can be sold or disenchanted, and the appearance stays in the collection.
The item level and the level 27 requirement for transmogrification do not matter: the appearance is available to a character of any level, as long as the class can wield daggers.
If you collect items with a story, Dirge is worth taking for the sheer fact of it — it is one of the most famous meme items in the game's history.
