Ebon Gryphon
Overview

The
Ebon Gryphon is an Alliance flying mount added in The Burning Crusade expansion in patch 2.0.1. It is a classic black gryphon with dark plumage and massive wings, one of the most recognizable symbols of the Alliance. The mount is purchased from gryphon vendors in Stormwind, Outland, and Northrend for 50 gold and is available only to players of the Alliance faction.
The mount's movement speed depends directly on your riding skill. With the basic Apprentice skill, the mount grants +60% ground movement speed, and with the Expert and Master skills, flying speed increases to +150%, +280%, or +310%. In the base configuration on the ground the mount grants a +60% bonus, and in flight +310% at maximum skill.
The Ebon Gryphon shares its model with the
Golden Gryphon and the
Snowy Gryphon, differing only in the dark coloring of its plumage.
Why You Want This Mount
- Guaranteed purchase — the mount does not depend on luck or drop chances. Just come to the vendor with 50 gold in your pocket, and the mount is yours
- Low cost — only 50 gold for a classic flying mount. This is one of the most affordable flying gryphon purchases in the game
- Classic gryphon model — the Ebon Gryphon captures the spirit of WoW's early expansions and fits any Alliance character look
- Multiple purchase points — vendors are located in Stormwind, Outland, and Northrend, so you won't have to fly far no matter where your character is
- Available to all Alliance races — humans, dwarves, night elves, gnomes, draenei, worgen, and more
- Low requirements — all you need is level 10 and the starter Apprentice Riding skill
- Part of the collection — the mount counts toward mount collection achievements and helps you progress along reward chains
How to Obtain
To purchase the Ebon Gryphon, follow a few simple steps:
- Play an Alliance character of any race and class
- Reach character level 10
- Learn the
Apprentice Riding skill from a riding trainer in any Alliance capital - Save up 50 gold (less, with possible reputation discounts)
- Head to any Alliance gryphon vendor (list below)
- Buy the
Ebon Gryphon item and use it to add the mount to your collection
The mount is bound on pickup, but once the item is used it becomes available to all Alliance characters on your account.
Where to Find the Vendor
The Ebon Gryphon is sold by five vendors in different parts of the world. You can choose any of them — the price and stock are identical.
Stormwind (main recommendation)
- Vendor: Tannec Stonebeak
- Location: Stormwind, within the city wall, on the Trade District side
- How to get there: Reach Stormwind through a portal from any Alliance capital or via the summoning system. The vendor is near the Stormwind flight master
This is the most convenient option for new characters and players who don't want to leave the Eastern Kingdoms.
Hellfire Peninsula (Outland)
- Vendor: Grunda Bronzewing
- Location: Hellfire Peninsula, Honor Hold
- How to get there: Use the portal to Outland from Stormwind (Mage Quarter) or through the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands
Borean Tundra (Northrend)
- Vendor: Durgan Thunderbeak
- Location: Borean Tundra, Valiance Keep
- How to get there: Take the ship from Stormwind Harbor to Valiance Keep
Dalaran (Northrend)
- Vendor: Mei Francis
- Location: Dalaran, Northrend (near the flight master)
- How to get there: If you have access to Dalaran, use a portal from a capital or the appropriate hearthstone
Mei Francis also sells several other mounts, so if you're building a collection it's convenient to visit her and look over the entire stock at once.
Reputation Discounts
Some vendors offer a discount on the mount depending on your reputation with certain factions. The discount is calculated on the standard Blizzard scale:
- Friendly: 5% discount
- Honored: 10% discount
- Revered: 15% discount
- Exalted: 20% discount (the price drops to 40 gold)
For example, when purchasing from Grunda Bronzewing, a discount applies based on reputation with the Honor Hold faction.
Step-by-Step Purchase Plan
- Log in with an Alliance character of level 10 or higher
- Make sure you have learned the
Apprentice Riding skill. If you don't have it, visit a riding trainer in any capital (for example, in Stormwind) - Check that you have 50 gold. If needed, sell unwanted items, send gold from another character, or complete a few simple quests
- Open the map and choose the nearest vendor. For most players the most convenient is Tannec Stonebeak in Stormwind
- Reach the vendor on foot, through a portal, or on another mount
- Open the trade window and find the
Ebon Gryphon item in the list - Buy the item, open your bag, and right-click to use it
- The mount will be added to your collection. Open the collections panel (Shift+P) and select the Ebon Gryphon in the list of flying mounts
Tips
1
Choose the nearest vendor — they all sell the mount at the same price, so there's no point flying across the world. Check where your character currently is and pick the closest seller
2
Use reputation discounts — if you already have Exalted reputation with Honor Hold or another suitable faction, the mount price drops to 40 gold
3
Low level is no obstacle — since patch 9.0.1 the mount is available from level 10. However, to use it as a flying mount in the open world you'll still need to learn the flying skill, which usually unlocks later
4
Check your collection before buying — if the Ebon Gryphon is already on one of your characters, it's automatically available to your whole account. Check the "Mount Collection" tab so you don't waste gold
5
Combine with a purchase from Mei Francis — if you're building a mount collection, visit Mei Francis in Dalaran. She sells several mounts at once, which is convenient for a bulk purchase
6
Save gold for the future — the price of 50 gold seems small at max level, but for a new character it's a significant sum. If you have a leveled character, mail the gold over
7
Don't confuse it with other gryphons — the game has many similar models (Golden Gryphon, Snowy Gryphon, Swift Dark War Gryphon). They are all sold by the same vendors but count as different mounts in the collection

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
