Fallen Charger's Reins

Fallen Charger's Reins is a rare ground mount added in patch 9.1 "Chains of Domination" of the Shadowlands expansion. It's a ghostly steed clad in golden armor that drops from the rare elite of the same name, the Fallen Charger, in The Maw. The mount is still obtainable in the current Midnight expansion.

• Rarity — the drop chance is around 5–10%, but the main challenge lies in the long wait for the mob to respawn
• Counts toward your overall mount collection and the progress of related achievements

Drop Chance

In July 2021, Blizzard introduced a daily loot limit on this mob (one attempt per day per character), while simultaneously increasing the mount's drop chance by roughly 3 times compared to the original value.

• A level 90 character (the current maximum level in Midnight) — at this level the mob is killed without any trouble
• Access to The Maw — for this you need to complete the introductory Shadowlands story campaign up to the point where you arrive in the Maw. At level 90 this is a formality, but the quest chain cannot be skipped
• An active covenant assault in the Maw — the Fallen Charger only appears when one of the covenant assaults (Kyrian, Necrolords, Night Fae, or Venthyr) is active in the zone

1. If you haven't yet completed the Shadowlands campaign, head to Oribos — the capital of the Shadowlands
2. Accept the introductory Shadowlands campaign quests from Highlord Bolvar Fordragon
3. Progress through the storyline until access to the Maw is unlocked
4. To access the covenant assaults you will also need to begin the patch 9.1 "Chains of Domination" campaign
5. Descend into the Maw via the portal in Oribos or through Korthia

The Fallen Charger is not an ordinary rare mob. It appears at a specific point and rides along a fixed route toward Korthia. If no player engages it in combat before it reaches the edge of the zone, it disappears.

• Appearance: a message is shown in chat — "An earsplitting whinny echoes across the Maw as the Fallen Charger begins its ride"
• Disappearance: "Fallen Charger releases a final mournful whinny as it fades away"

Where the Fallen Charger appears depends on which covenant assault is active in the Maw:

Routes by Assault

• Necrolords: bridge to the Altar of Domination → through the Bastion of Despair → the Maw of the Forgotten → western part of the Beastwarrens
• Night Fae: Forge of the Damned → southern Pools of Suffering → southern part of Zovaal's Cauldron → Detritus → the Maw of the Forgotten → western part of the Beastwarrens
• Venthyr: Tremaculum → northern Pools of Suffering → past Ve'nari's Refuge → northern and eastern route

1. Check the active assault. Open the Maw map and determine which covenant assault is currently active
2. Take position. Head to the spawn point matching the current assault (see the table above)
3. Use the group finder. Open the group finder (the "I" key) → Premade Groups → Custom → search for "Fallen Charger" groups. Joining a group on another realm gives an extra chance that the mob will appear on that very realm
4. Wait for the spawn. Watch the chat — a system message about the whinny appears at spawn
5. Intercept the steed. As soon as you see the message or the marker on the map, run to cut across the route. The steed moves faster than a regular ground mount, so don't try to catch it from behind — cut corners
6. Engage in combat. At level 90 in Midnight gear the mob is killed in a matter of seconds
7. Grab the loot. If the Fallen Charger's Reins drop — congratulations! If not — come back tomorrow or on another character

How Long It Takes

The main problem with farming isn't the fight itself (it's trivial at level 90), but the wait for the respawn. You can spend anywhere from 1 to 14 hours waiting for a single spawn.

Optimal Strategy

• Use alts. Each character with access to the Maw can loot the mob once per day. The more alts — the more attempts
• Group up through LFG. Groups on different realms have different respawn timers — by hopping between groups, you increase your chances of catching a spawn
• Do other things. Leave your character in the Maw and check the chat periodically. Many players farm the steed "in the background" while switching to other tasks
• Optimal waiting spot — the bridge between Ve'nari's Refuge and Tremaculum, from where it's convenient to intercept the steed on most routes

Attempt Calculation

The calculation is approximate and does not account for the respawn wait time, which is the main limiting factor.

• Buy the Cypher of Relocation from Ve'nari — this item lets you instantly teleport to Ve'nari's Refuge from anywhere in the Maw. It costs 60 Stygia and has 5 charges
• Cut corners, don't chase. The Fallen Charger moves faster than your ground mount. Learn the routes and position yourself to cut it off
• Class doesn't matter. At level 90 any class will kill the mob in seconds. Pick the character with the most convenient mobility (Druid, Demon Hunter, Monk)
• The SilverDragon or RareScanner addon. Install an addon for tracking rare mobs — it will play an audio alert when the Fallen Charger appears, even if you got distracted
• Don't forget about the assaults. The steed appears only during an active covenant assault. Check the assault schedule before heading into the Maw
• Patience is the main resource. Many players get the mount in 5–20 attempts. The main difficulty isn't the drop chance, but the waiting time between respawns
