Fiery Warhorse
Overview

Fiery Warhorse is a rare ground mount added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion (patch 2.0.1). It is a blazing steed visually identical to Midnight — the warhorse of Attumen the Huntsman himself, the first boss of the Karazhan raid. This fire-wreathed black-coated horse with a flaming mane and hooves is considered one of the most spectacular classic mounts in the game.
The main way to get it is to farm the reins from Attumen the Huntsman. The drop chance is extremely low: about 1% according to Wowhead and around 0.7% based on collectors' calculations. The alternative is buying it on the Black Market from Mei Francis in the Broken Isles: there the mount appears with a starting bid of 20,000 gold.
Why You Want This Mount
- Prestigious rarity — one of the oldest rare drop mounts in the game. It is rarely seen among collectors, especially combined with Attumen's helm and other transmog items from Karazhan.
- Unique model — a blazing horse with separate fire animation on its mane and hooves. It stands out visually on any server and remains one of the most beautiful ground mounts.
- Achievement and collection credit — obtaining it unlocks the eponymous achievement Reins of the Fiery Warhorse and counts toward your total mount tally for meta-achievements like Leading the Cavalry.
- Farms solo — at max level 80 in The War Within the entire Karazhan raid can be cleared alone in 10–15 minutes, and reaching Attumen takes literally a couple of minutes.
- Two parallel methods — besides direct farming, the reins are regularly listed on the Black Market. If you've had no luck with the drop after hundreds of runs, there's always the auction option.
How to Reach Karazhan
Karazhan is a huge abandoned tower located in the southern part of the Deadwind Pass zone in the Eastern Kingdoms. The raid was added in The Burning Crusade and since patch 2.4.0 requires no attunement — in the current version of the game you enter the instance directly at the tower's gates.
For the Alliance
- Fly out from Stormwind to Duskwood (the flight point is Darkshire)
- Head strictly east along the road, crossing the border into Deadwind Pass
- Aim for the black silhouette of the tower in the southern part of the zone
For the Horde
- From Orgrimmar use the portal to the Blasted Lands or teleport to the summoning stone in Stonard
- From Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows head west, crossing the border into Deadwind Pass
- Follow the single road south to the tower
Quick Methods
- Hearthstone — set it at the nearest flight point in Duskwood (Alliance) or Stonard (Horde)
- Friend's hearthstone — if you have a suitable alt or friend sitting near Karazhan
- Atiesh — the legendary staff
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian teleports its owner straight to the gates of Karazhan. The staff is obtained in Naxxramas (classic version), a rarity in itself
The raid entrance is at the base of the tower. Select "Normal" difficulty through the difficulty menu (interface I) and head inside.
Step-by-Step Obtaining Guide
- Fly to Darkshire (Alliance) or Stonard (Horde) and head into Deadwind Pass at coordinates
/way #41 46.6 74.6 - Set the raid difficulty to "Normal" in the group window and enter the portal at the gates of Karazhan
- Pass through the first rooms and corridors to the Stables — this is just a few packs of weak mobs at the entrance. You don't need to kill the horse mobs in the stables, they're not in the way
- Enter the central stall of the stables and trigger the fight with Midnight. This summons Attumen the Huntsman at about 95% of the horse's health
- Kill both Midnight and Attumen. At level 80 the fight lasts a few seconds — the entire set of mechanics (charge, hoof stun) is ignored thanks to the level difference
- Open the loot chest. With a chance of about 1% you'll see the
Reins of the Fiery Warhorse. If you're unlucky, leave the instance, reset the raid, and try again the following week or on an alt
Attumen the Huntsman Fight Details
At level 80 in The War Within the fight is a formality — any class and spec kills the Midnight-and-Attumen pair in mere seconds. Knowing the mechanics isn't necessary, but for completeness:
- Midnight — a neutral horse, attacked first. When its health drops to 95%, Attumen the Huntsman is summoned
- Berserker attack — triggers when Attumen's or Midnight's health falls to 25%. Attumen mounts up and the fight continues with the merged model
- Sweeping strike — a frontal cone on the boss's front side. Don't stand in front of the boss if farming on fragile classes — though at level 80 this isn't critical
- Powerful stomp — a mass AoE with spell interruption. Ignored at high level
Attumen has no mechanics that block a solo run: no mandatory group, no untouchable phases, no damage requirements. He can be killed on any class.
Farming Optimization
Weekly Cycle
Karazhan follows the general raid loot-lock rule: one character gets one attempt at the mount per week (reset on Wednesday in Europe and Tuesday in North America). Re-entering after killing Attumen won't give a drop. If you're set on the mount — bring in alts.
- Fly to Karazhan and kill Attumen
- Open the chest and check the contents
- If the mount isn't there — leave the instance; the
/raid resetcommand won't reset the loot lock (you'll have to wait for the reset), switch to the next character - Repeat on all available level 80 alts
Optimal Classes and Specs
Any class works for farming, but it's most convenient to pick one with maximum movement speed and AoE trash clearing. Classic favorite options:
- Demon Hunter — double jump and glide speed up movement through the tower
- Monk —
Roll and high mobility
Multi-Farming on Alts
Every additional level 80 character is an independent mount roll once a week. If you have 10 alts, your weekly chances multiply by 10. Recommendations:
- Keep a
Hearthstone binding on each alt at the flight point nearest to Karazhan - Register a fast route: portal → flight → raid → kill Attumen → exit
- One full lap on an alt takes 3–5 minutes including travel
- With 10 alts the total weekly time investment is about 40 minutes
Drop Math
With a 1% drop chance and 10 alts weekly, the average expected farm duration is about 10 weeks until the first drop. With a 0.7% chance and the same 10 alts — about 14 weeks. If you have a single main character, be prepared for a hundred or more attempts. The mount is known for dropping for someone in the first week and not dropping for others for several years — pure statistics.
Alternative Path: The Black Market
The Reins of the Fiery Warhorse are regularly listed on the Black Market by the merchant Mei Francis. Bidding starts at 20,000 gold, but the final price usually soars into the millions due to other players' bids.
- The Black Market is available only to max-level characters
- The auctioneer Mei Francis is located in the Broken Isles (and also in Howling Fjord and other locations — positions have changed with expansions)
- Lots last 12 hours, with no buyout — bids only
- Check the Black Market every day before the loot-lock reset — sometimes the reins appear several times a month
If you have enough gold and are tired of farming, this is the most reliable way to guarantee the mount.
Tips
Don't leave the raid without checking the chest — there have been cases where a player ran out and missed the loot. Always open Attumen's body.
Set up a roster of alts in advance — ten level 80 characters via accelerated leveling in The War Within take a couple of weeks and pay off not only with Karazhan but with all the other old-content raid mounts.
Don't waste time on a full Karazhan clear just for the reins — Attumen is the only source. The other 10+ raid bosses give transmog and gold, but not this mount.
Watch the Black Market in parallel with farming — this increases your chances of closing out the mount.
The mount is account-wide — as soon as one character gets the
Reins of the Fiery Warhorse, the mount unlocks for all your characters regardless of faction.
Farm transmog at the same time — Karazhan provides many unique T4-category weapon and armor models. While farming the mount, collect the sets.
Watch for the "Turtle's Luck" buff — during some in-game events Blizzard increases the drop chances of rare mounts. Such windows are the ideal time for accelerated farming.
