Overview

Flying Carpet

Flying Carpet is a flying mount crafted by tailors in World of Warcraft. Carpets first appeared in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion (patch 3.0.2) and have remained one of the most recognizable profession-based modes of transport in the game ever since. A simple woven carpet hovers in the air, carrying your character above the ground — a minimalist yet stylish way to fly, available exclusively to tailors.

The mount is tied to the profession: to use the Flying Carpet, your character must have Tailoring learned. If you abandon the profession, the carpet disappears from your list of available mounts until you take up Tailoring again.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Profession exclusivity — flying carpets are available only to tailors. This sets you apart from other players and highlights your chosen specialization
  • Easy to obtain — crafting it only requires the starting level of Northrend Tailoring. All materials are easy to buy at the auction house or gather yourself
  • The start of a carpet collection — the basic Flying Carpet opens the way to a whole family of flying carpets: Magnificent Flying Carpet, Frosty Flying Carpet, Creeping Carpet and others
  • Scalable speed — the carpet's speed depends on your riding skill: +60%/+100% on the ground and +150%/+280%/+310% in the air
  • Account-wide — once learned, the mount appears in your collection and can be used by any character who has Tailoring

Requirements

Parameter Value
Profession for crafting Northrend Tailoring (1)
Profession for using Tailoring (1)
Character level 10
Riding skill Apprentice Riding (ground), Expert Riding (flight)
Binding Binds when learned

Please note: crafting specifically requires the "Northrend Tailoring" section, while using requires any level of Tailoring on the character.

How to Obtain

Step 1: Learn Northrend Tailoring

If your character does not yet have the "Northrend Tailoring" section, visit a Tailoring trainer in Northrend. The main trainer is Charles Worth in Dalaran (Northrend). He can be found in the "Talismanic Textiles" shop on the Magus Commerce Exchange.

Other Northrend trainers:

Learning the "Northrend Tailoring" section costs only 10 copper.

Step 2: Learn the Recipe

The recipe for the Flying Carpet (the spell Flying Carpet) is learned from the same Northrend Tailoring trainer. No additional requirements beyond having the "Northrend Tailoring" section are needed.

Step 3: Gather the Materials

Crafting requires the following components:

Material Quantity Source
Bolt of Imbued Frostweave 6 Crafted (Tailoring) from frostweave and infinite dust
Iceweb Spider Silk 4 Dropped by Northrend spiders or auction house
Green Dye 4 Tailoring supply vendors
Heavy Silken Thread 5 Tailoring supply vendors

Where to get the materials:

  • Bolt of Imbued Frostweave is crafted from 2 bolts of frostweave and 2 units of infinite dust. For 6 bolts of imbued frostweave you will need 12 bolts of regular frostweave (60 units of frostweave cloth) and 12 units of infinite dust
  • Iceweb Spider Silk drops from spiders in Northrend — Web Trappers in Nagrand (Northrend), Crystalweb Weavers in the Caverns of Time and others. It is usually sold at an affordable price at the auction house
  • Green Dye and Heavy Silken Thread are sold by cloth and tailoring supply vendors in any major city

Step 4: Craft the Mount

Open the "Northrend Tailoring" profession window, find the "Flying Carpet" recipe and click "Create". The process takes 20 seconds. Once finished, a Flying Carpet will appear in your inventory — right-click it to add the mount to your collection.

All Flying Carpet Variants

Tailoring unlocks access to a whole family of carpets. If you enjoy the aesthetic of carpet flight, here is the complete list of variants:

Mount ID Source Note
Flying Carpet 44554 Crafted (Northrend) Basic variant, can be sold
Magnificent Flying Carpet 44558 Crafted (Northrend) Upgraded model, binds

Creeping Carpet 115363 Crafted (Draenor) Carpet from Warlords of Draenor
Enchanted Spellweave Carpet 231374 Token vendor Sold during the "Timewalking: WotLK" event

All carpets require Tailoring to be used.

Tips

1

Check the auction house before farming — materials for the ability_mount_flyingcarpetFlying Carpet come from outdated content and are inexpensive. It is often more profitable to buy all the components at the auction house than to gather them yourself in Northrend.

2

Can be sold or gifted — unlike the other carpets, the basic ability_mount_flyingcarpetFlying Carpet does not bind before use. You can craft it and sell it at the auction house to other tailors

3

Don't forget the flying skill — to use the carpet in the air you need the "Expert Riding" skill. Without it the mount will only work as a ground transport.

4

Northrend Dalaran, not the Broken Isles — the trainer Charles Worth is present in both versions of Dalaran, but the Northrend recipes are available only in the original Dalaran above Northrend. You can get there via a portal in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.

5

Collect the whole set — since you are a tailor, craft the ability_mount_magnificentflyingcarpetMagnificent Flying Carpet and ability_mount_frostyflyingcarpetFrosty Flying Carpet while you are at it. Their materials are also inexpensive, and three unique mounts in your collection are a nice bonus.

6

Profession is required to ride — if you switch Tailoring for another profession, all carpets become unavailable. You can only get them back by learning Tailoring again.
