Frightened Kodo is an epic-quality ground mount added to World of Warcraft in the Battle for Azeroth expansion (patch 8.1.0, "Tides of Vengeance"). It is a large kodo with a unique pale coloration that cannot be obtained any other way. According to the mount journal description, this is the very kodo you see in the "Terror of Darkshore" cinematic: the beast bolts in panic after Malfurion Stormrage, in bear form, comes crashing down on a Horde convoy.
The mount does not drop from a kill — the Frightened Kodo appears as a rare peaceful creature in Darkshore. You have to approach it and manage to perform a short interaction —
Tame Beast. Only the first player to finish the channel gets the mount. The main challenge is catching the rare creature alive: the respawn interval ranges from 2 to 8 hours, and it stays visible for only a couple of minutes.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Minimum level | 10 (lowered from 20 in patch 9.0.1) |
| Riding skill | Apprentice Riding |
| Faction | Alliance or Horde (no restrictions) |
| Zone phase | Darkshore, Battle for Azeroth phase |
| Required story | War Campaign table intro quest |
| Raid progress | Not required |
| Professions | Not required |
The key point is the correct phase of Darkshore. Without the War Campaign table intro quest for the Battle for Darkshore, your character will see either the classic pre-Cataclysm version of the zone or the post-Cataclysm Teldrassil version. The Frightened Kodo does not appear there. Before farming, you must activate the War Campaign story chain.
The steps differ by faction, but the logic is the same: find the War Campaign table and pick up the intro quest.
After completing the intro quest, teleport via portal or fly to Darkshore. Your map should display the BfA version of the zone with a ruined Lor'danel and the Black Scar Wounds in the south. If you see an intact Teldrassil or a city in the north — that is the wrong phase, and you need to finish one more step of the story chain.
The Frightened Kodo appears at six points in the southern half of Darkshore. All the points are close to one another, so a full circuit takes just 2–3 minutes.
| # | Coordinates | TomTom command |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 41.3, 65.5 | /way Darkshore 41.3 65.5 Frightened Kodo 1 |
| 2 | 44.0, 67.5 | /way Darkshore 44.0 67.5 Frightened Kodo 2 |
| 3 | 41.3, 54.0 | /way Darkshore 41.3 54.0 Frightened Kodo 3 |
| 4 | 38.0, 66.0 | /way Darkshore 38.0 66.0 Frightened Kodo 4 |
| 5 | 44.0, 65.0 | /way Darkshore 44.0 65.0 Frightened Kodo 5 |
| 6 | 39.2, 56.5 | /way Darkshore 39.2 56.5 Frightened Kodo 6 |
Install the TomTom addon and paste all six commands one by one — arrows to each point will appear on the map. Instead of TomTom you can use HandyNotes + the HandyNotes: Darkshore Rares module, which draws icons directly on the game map.

The kodo does not attack characters and cannot be attacked. If you are too late and the kodo has already vanished or another player clicked it — waiting at the spot is pointless; the next respawn will be at a random point from the list.
The main difficulty is the long and unstable respawn interval. To speed up the farm, use techniques that grant several attempts a day:
The route around the six points is easiest to build clockwise: start at point 3 (41.3, 54.0), then point 6 (39.2, 56.5), point 4 (38.0, 66.0), point 1 (41.3, 65.5), point 5 (44.0, 65.0), point 2 (44.0, 67.5), and back to point 3. On a flying mount the whole loop takes 2–3 minutes, which fits perfectly within the rare creature's visibility window.
For this mount, class doesn't matter. The kodo is a peaceful creature; you don't need to fight, nor kill surrounding mobs. The addon and reaction time matter more. The only advantage belongs to classes with fast movement abilities, to make it in time from the neighboring point.
Unlike mounts from chests, the Frightened Kodo is a single event per phase. On the same server shard, all players see the same kodo. There is no point in running the farm on alts — they will be in the same phase and compete with one another. A single character with scanning addons is more effective.
Enable autoloot and check your interaction settings — make sure the button for interacting with friendly NPCs isn't bound to a conflicting hotkey. When the kodo appears there's no time to dig through settings.
Check whether the spawn is live right after a server reset — after the weekly reset (Wednesday in Europe, Tuesday in North America) a wave of active rare respawns often appears. Drop by Darkshore in the first hours after the reset.
Use Rare Scanner or SilverDragon — these addons play a loud sound and show a pop-up banner when a rare NPC appears. Without it, it's easy to miss the kodo in your field of view.
Pay attention to nearby rare creatures — in the same Darkshore phase you can catch other rares with mounts and pets along the way. Circling the six kodo points will also cover those creatures' spawn zones.
Remember — this can't be farmed by solo leveling — the mount doesn't drop from mobs, and it can't be earned from a quest or achievement. The only way is to catch the rare creature alive. Be ready for a long wait.
Only one player gets the mount — if someone else is standing nearby, hurry. After a successful cast, the creature disappears for the other player, and the mount goes to the winner.
The mount is account-bound — once obtained, it will be available to all your characters. There is no need to farm it again.
