Frostbrood Proto-Wyrm

Frostbrood Proto-Wyrm is an epic flying mount from the proto-drake family, added to World of Warcraft in September 2022. The mount is an undead proto-drake saturated with the Lich King's undead magic: dark-blue scales are covered with icy growths, while a cold glow emanates from its wings and spine. The Frostbrood Proto-Wyrm was available as a promotional reward for completing the Death Knight starting quest chain in Wrath of the Lich King Classic.

Status: the mount is no longer obtainable. The promotion ended on November 28, 2022, with the release of the Dragonflight expansion.

• A unique undead proto-drake model with a dark, icy color scheme — the only mount with this appearance in the game
• A special summoning animation: the character gathers Domination energy in their hands before calling the mount
• Exclusivity: the mount was available for only about three months and is no longer granted, making it rare in collections
• It counts toward the overall mount collection total for achievements

To get the mount, you needed to complete the Death Knight starting quest chain in Wrath of the Lich King Classic before the release of the Dragonflight expansion on November 28, 2022.

Although the mount can no longer be obtained, the process required to unlock it is described below. This information is preserved for reference.

Step 1 — Creating a Death Knight in WotLK Classic

You needed to create a Death Knight class character on any Wrath of the Lich King Classic realm. On Fresh Start realms, creating a Death Knight required an existing level 55 or higher character on the same realm.

Step 2 — Completing the starting zone

Death Knights begin their journey in Acherus: The Ebon Hold — a unique level 55 starting zone. You needed to complete the entire starting-zone quest chain, including key story moments:

• Learning Death Knight abilities
• Completing quests for the Scourge
• The Battle for Light's Hope Chapel
• Breaking free from the Lich King's will

Step 3 — Final quest

To complete the promotion, you needed to finish one of the following quests:

• Alliance: Where Kings Walk — a visit to Stormwind
• Horde: Saurfang's Blessing — a visit to Orgrimmar

After completing the final quest, the mount automatically appeared in the mount collection of retail WoW on the same Battle.net account.

Time investment

Completing the Death Knight starting zone took roughly 1–2 hours, even for players unfamiliar with the class.

The Frostbrood Proto-Wyrm has a unique visual style:

• Model: an undead proto-drake based on the updated Dragonflight proto-drake model
• Color scheme: dark-blue scales with icy and necrotic elements
• Glow: a cold blue glow emanates from its eyes, wings, and spine
• Summoning animation: the character gathers Domination energy in their hands, after which the mount materializes from a dark portal — a nod to the Jailer's magic and the Runes of Domination from the Shadowlands expansion
