Overview

Frosty Flying Carpet

The Game iconFrosty Flying Carpet is an epic flying mount crafted through the Game iconTailoring profession. The mount was added in patch 3.3.3 of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion and remained relevant for tailors playing into the Cataclysm era. It is an icy version of the classic Game iconFlying Carpet, distinguished by its frosty-blue coloring and glowing blue orbs at the corners.

The mount provides +150%, +280%, or +310% flight speed depending on your riding skill, and moves at +60% or +100% speed on the ground. Visually, your character sits cross-legged on a carpet hovering in the air, making the model one of the most recognizable in the game.

The mount's key feature is that it binds when picked up, so only a tailor with profession level 425 or higher can ride it. As such, the Game iconFrosty Flying Carpet serves as a calling card for experienced Tailoring masters.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Profession exclusivity — the mount is only available to characters with Tailoring at level 425, setting you apart from ordinary players
  • Unique animation — the carpet hovers in the air without wings or engines, creating a feeling of true magic
  • High speed — with Artisan Riding the mount reaches up to +310% in flight, matching the best figures among flying mounts
  • Thematic design — the four glowing icy orbs at the corners of the carpet visually recall the Game iconFrozen Orbs used in its creation
  • Stock collection addition — a great way to spend the surplus of Northrend materials that pile up for active tailors
  • Northrend nostalgia — the mount recalls the crafting traditions of the Lich King era and looks great in wintry zones

How to Obtain

To obtain the mount you will need to level Tailoring to 425, buy the pattern from a special vendor in Dalaran (Northrend), and gather all the required materials.

  1. Raise your Game iconTailoring skill to 425. To do this you must learn the "Northrend Tailoring" specialization from the appropriate trainer
  2. Travel to Dalaran in Northrend. If you have no quick way to reach old Dalaran, use a Legendary portal or teleport there via a Mage Port
  3. Accumulate at least 6 Game iconFrozen Orbs to buy the pattern
  4. Find the vendor Frozo the Renowned at the Magus Commerce Exchange in Dalaran. He sits on a hovering flying carpet out in the open between the shops
  5. Buy the Game iconPattern: Frosty Flying Carpet from him for 6 Game iconFrozen Orbs
  6. Learn the pattern — the recipe binds to your character when picked up
  7. Gather all the required crafting materials (see the table below)
  8. Craft the Game iconFrosty Flying Carpet at a tailoring table
  9. Use the finished item to add the mount to your collection

Crafting Materials

To create the mount at a tailoring table in Dalaran you will need to gather the following set of materials:

Material Quantity
Game iconMoonshroud 1
Game iconSpellweave 1
Game iconEbonweave 1
Game iconFrozen Orb 4

Additionally, many tailors prepare the related materials in advance:

How to Obtain the Cloth Components

Game iconMoonshroud, Game iconSpellweave, and Game iconEbonweave are created via Magic portals at special power zones in Northrend locations: the Moonglade clearing in the Wintergrasp area, the Well of Eternity, and the Altar rocks. Each recipe is performed with an internal cooldown.

If you don't have time to wait for the cooldowns to reset, you can buy ready-made cloth on the auction house. As a rule, their price stays at a stable level.

How to Obtain Frozen Orbs

Game iconFrozen Orbs are a Northrend currency that drops from heroic dungeon bosses. Since patch 3.3, the orbs also drop from the final boss of normal versions of Northrend dungeons, which has greatly simplified farming.

How to Reach Frozo the Renowned

Frozo the Renowned is a gnome vendor sitting on a hovering flying carpet in the center of the Magus Commerce Exchange in Dalaran. He was added in patch 3.3.3 as a way to convert players' accumulated Game iconFrozen Orbs into useful materials and recipes.

The Route to Dalaran

  1. If your character has already visited Northrend, use a Hearthstone set to Dalaran
  2. An alternative method is to open a portal to Dalaran via a mage or pass through the portal halls of your faction's capital
  3. In Dalaran, find the Magus Commerce Exchange — it is located in the southwestern part of the city
  4. Frozo the Renowned sits right out in the open on a flying carpet between the shops. He is easy to find thanks to his noticeable size and bright clothing

What Else Frozo Sells

In addition to the Game iconPattern: Frosty Flying Carpet, Frozo trades Game iconFrozen Orbs for:

This makes visiting him worthwhile even after buying the mount pattern.

Leveling Tailoring to 425

If you don't yet have the required Tailoring skill, begin leveling with the basic recipes and progressively learn specializations from trainers.

Main Stages

  1. 1–75: Learn the basic recipes from the apprentice trainer in the capital. Craft a Thin Linen Belt from linen cloth
  2. 75–150: Move on to woolen items, such as a Simple Wool Cloak
  3. 150–225: Use silk cloth for a Silk Belt and other items
  4. 225–300: Runecloth becomes the main material. Craft belts and gloves from Runecloth
  5. 300–350: Learn the Outland recipes from the trainer in Shattrath
  6. 350–425: Move on to Northrend materials. Game iconFrostweave Cloth is the basis for all Northrend recipes

Key Recipes of the Final Range

  • 350–360: Bolt of Frostweave
  • 360–385: Frostsavage Boots and other basic frostweave items
  • 385–400: Bolt of Imbued Frostweave
  • 400–425: Moonshroud, Spellweave, and Ebonweave

After reaching 425 you will be able to craft the mount. To continue leveling to 450, use kit items with patterns from reputation vendors and bosses.

Tips

1

Check the auction house — if you lack the time to level Tailoring or gather materials, buy ready-made Moonshroud, Spellweave, and Ebonweave on the auction house. It is often more profitable to buy ready-made than to wait for cooldowns

2

Use cooldowns regularly — if you already have Tailoring 425, create Moonshroud, Spellweave, and Ebonweave daily in the corresponding power zones. The accumulated materials will be useful not only for the mount

3

Farm Frozen Orbs — they still drop in Northrend dungeons. In Cataclysm, the former Northrend heroics are turned into normal instances, and they are easy to clear solo at max level

4

A tailor-only mount — remember that the ability_mount_frostyflyingcarpetFrosty Flying Carpet requires Tailoring 425 not only to craft but also to use. Unlike the ordinary ability_mount_flyingcarpetFlying Carpet, it cannot be sold or gifted.

5

Optimize your trip to Frozo — buy several useful items at once for your spell_frost_frozencoreFrozen Orbs. For example, inv_misc_herb_frostlotusFrost Lotus is always in demand among alchemists.

6

Keep Artisan Riding — the mount only reveals its potential with riding skill 300. Make sure you have bought the upgrade from a riding trainer in advance.

7

Alternative versions — tailors can also create the ability_mount_magnificentflyingcarpetMagnificent Flying Carpet (red) and the ordinary ability_mount_flyingcarpetFlying Carpet (blue). Collectors should gather all three variants for a complete collection.

8

Don't forget the Magic portal cooldown — creating cloth via a Magic portal has an internal cooldown of 4 days. Plan your crafting in advance if you have little time to prepare.
