Garn Nighthowl
Overview

Garn Nighthowl is an epic-quality ground mount added in the Warlords of Draenor expansion (patch 6.0.2). It is a massive shadow wolf of the garn family — the fiercest predators of Draenor, who always hunt in packs. The mount drops with a 100% chance from the boss Nok-Karosh in Frostfire Ridge.
The main feature of this mount is that it binds when equipped, meaning you can sell it on the auction house or pass it to another character. This makes the Garn Nighthowl not only a collectible mount but also a steady source of gold.
Why You Want This Mount
- Guaranteed drop — the mount drops with a 100% chance, which is a great rarity for mounts in World of Warcraft
- Sellable on the auction house — binding on equip lets you farm the mount for sale
- Striking appearance — a massive shadow wolf with dark fur and glowing eyes
- Low requirements — level 10 and the Apprentice Riding skill are enough to use it
- Available to both factions — suitable for both the Alliance and the Horde
Requirements
- A character of level 10 or higher
- The Apprentice Riding skill
- Recommended level for a solo kill is 50+ (at level 90 the boss is killed in a few seconds)
- Access to Draenor (a portal in the faction capital or a garrison)
How to Obtain
The mount can be acquired in only one way — by killing the elite mob Nok-Karosh in Frostfire Ridge (Draenor). Nok-Karosh is a giant garn living in the western part of the zone. It is not a rare mob — the boss appears regularly with a short respawn timer.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1 — Getting to Frostfire Ridge
For the Horde:
- Use the portal in Orgrimmar leading to your garrison on Draenor. The portal is in the Tower of the Void next to the other portals.
- From the garrison, fly west.
For the Alliance:
- Use the portal in Stormwind leading to your garrison on Draenor. The portal is in the Mage Tower.
- From the garrison, fly northwest into Frostfire Ridge.
Alternative route (both factions):
- In the capital, find the portal to Ashran (Draenor).
- From Ashran, fly north into Frostfire Ridge.
Step 2 — Finding Nok-Karosh
Nok-Karosh is located in the western part of Frostfire Ridge, northwest of Wor'gol. Use a macro to place a marker on your map:
The boss is positioned on a rise surrounded by a pack of sleeping Garn Nighthowls. Be careful — if you attack the wolves in the pack, they all aggro together.
Step 3 — Killing the Boss
At level 90 (Midnight): Nok-Karosh is killed in a few seconds by any class and specialization. Just fly in, attack the boss, and grab the loot. The pack of wolves around it poses no threat either.
At low levels (below 50): The boss deals enormous damage and can kill your character with a single hit. In this case, use one of the following strategies:
- Kiting: Death knights, hunters, and other classes with slows can kite the boss, dealing damage on the run
- Pet tanks: Summon pets or elementals to take the damage for you (for example, the Army of the Dead for death knights)
- Group: Gather a group of 3–5 players and rotate taunts
Step 4 — Claiming the Mount
After Nok-Karosh is killed, one Garn Nighthowl is guaranteed to drop. If you are in a group, the mount is rolled among the members using the Need/Greed system.
Farming for Sale — Optimization
Since the mount binds when equipped, you can farm it for sale. Here is how to do this as efficiently as possible:
Farm solo. At level 90 there is no reason to gather a group — the boss dies instantly, and all the loot goes to you.
Stay near the respawn point. After being killed, Nok-Karosh reappears in 10–30 minutes. Find something to do nearby or open a second screen.
Don't kill the pack of wolves. According to player observations, if you leave the surrounding garns alone, the boss respawns faster — in roughly 10–15 minutes.
Use several characters. If you have alts of level 50+, you can rotate farming across several characters. The mount is BoE — it can be passed via mail or the guild bank.
Watch the auction house prices. The mount's value varies from server to server. The price is usually between 5,000 and 30,000 gold. Sell during peak hours — on weekday evenings or on weekends.
Tips and FAQ
Can the mount be obtained again? Yes. The mount drops on every kill, even if you already have it in your collection. Sell the extra copies on the auction house.
Do I need a garrison? No, a garrison is not required. You can reach Frostfire Ridge through the portal to Ashran.
The boss isn't appearing — what should I do? Make sure you are standing at the correct coordinates (
15.8, 41.0). If the boss doesn't appear, move 20–30 meters away from the respawn point — by observation, Nok-Karosh may fail to appear if the player stands right on his spawn spot.Is the mount ground-only? Yes, the Garn Nighthowl is a ground mount. Its speed depends on your riding skill: +60% or +100%.
Can Nok-Karosh be tamed? Yes, hunters can tame him as a wolf-family pet. However, after taming, the mount does not drop — you need to actually kill the boss.
Does it work in a group? When killed in a group, only one mount drops for the whole group. At level 80 it is more profitable to farm solo.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
