Overview

Gorehowl

Game iconGorehowl is an epic-quality two-handed axe added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a weapon that is legendary in terms of lore: the axe of Grommash Hellscream, chieftain of the Warsong clan. Its massive double-bladed head with a serrated edge and dark haft is instantly recognizable — one of the most iconic weapon silhouettes in the entire game.

The flavor text leaves no doubt about its origin: "Grommash Hellscream's axe has spread terror across the fields of a hundred battles." For transmogrification this is a coveted trophy among warriors, demon hunters, and everyone who collects appearances with historical weight.

Source

The axe drops in the Karazhan dungeon from its final boss — Prince Malchezaar.

  • Boss: Prince Malchezaar, the closing encounter of Karazhan.
  • The drop chance is about 15.8%, meaning roughly one run out of six or seven.
  • Karazhan is The Burning Crusade-level content, so it can be soloed on any modern class without trouble.
  • The limit is one run per week per character: the raid resets once a week, and you will have to clear most of Karazhan to reach Malchezaar.
  • To speed up the farm, level several characters: each one grants a separate weekly attempt.

You can reach Karazhan through the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands and on into Draenor — or via teleport if you have been there before. The entrance to the dungeon itself is at the foot of Karazhan tower in Deadwind Pass.

A chance of around 16% sounds decent, but the weekly lockout turns the farm into a marathon: on a single character it takes six to seven weeks on average. Several alts on this boss are the main way to shorten the wait.

Alternatives

The axe has an updated, higher-detail model from the Dragonflight era.

Updated HD model Dragonflight-era megadungeon Game iconGorehowl, Might of the Warchief
  • Game iconGorehowl, Might of the Warchief is the same axe in modern detail, of epic quality. The silhouette is identical to the original; only the model and texture quality differ.

If you specifically want the classic "rough" version — take the original from Prince Malchezaar. If you want a crisper, modern model — look at the "Might of the Warchief" version.

Visual fit

  • Ideal for orcish looks in the style of the Warsong clan and the Draenor legacy — it is literally their chieftain's axe.
  • Pairs well with dark plate and leather sets in a red-brown and steel palette.
  • Suits warriors, demon hunters, and paladins going for a brutal, "barbaric" appearance.
  • Contrasts with light and "holy" armor — a controversial but expressive choice for those who enjoy playing on contrast.

Tips

1

Level several characters for the farm: each grants a separate weekly attempt on Malchezaar, which noticeably speeds up getting the axe.

2

The axe binds to the character on acquisition, so you cannot farm it "for sale" or pass it to another character — farm on whoever needs it.

3

Before a run, make sure the Karazhan raid is reset: the attempt on Malchezaar is available once a week.

4

You do not have to clear all of Karazhan — you can run straight to Malchezaar, clearing only what blocks your path.

5

A single run from the same boss drops other valuable transmog loot too, so the farm pays off even without the axe itself.

6

If the original model takes too long to drop, consider the HD version "Gorehowl, Might of the Warchief" as a more accessible source of the same silhouette.
