Overview

Great Brown Kodo

Game iconGreat Brown Kodo is an epic ground mount of the Horde from the Tauren racial kodo line. It is sold by the same vendor in Mulgore as the basic kodos, but this model belongs to the "great" category: the beast is noticeably more massive, its coloring richer, and its speed twice as fast.

The mount is one of the three "great" kodos alongside the Game iconGreat Gray Kodo and the Game iconGreat White Kodo. All three are sold in Mulgore, in Bloodhoof Village, and differ only in coloring. In the current expansion the line is still relevant: it is precisely how you complete the collection of Tauren racial mounts — three basic and three epic.

Why you want this mount

  • Epic speed with minimal requirements — unlike the basic Game iconBrown Kodo with its 60% bonus, its "great" version grants a full 100% movement speed increase. Moreover, after the 9.0.1 changes the mount can already be ridden with the basic riding skill at level 10
  • Classic dark brown coloring — the brown kodo looks like the "canonical" beast of the Tauren. It pairs perfectly with standard Tauren transmog, brown leather armor, and the old shaman and druid tiers
  • A symbolic price for an epic mount — 10 gold for 100% speed is an amount a character gathers from a couple of quests in any The War Within zone. Even all three "great" kodos together cost just 30 gold
  • Completes the kodo collection — together with the basic Game iconWhite Kodo, Game iconBrown Kodo, Game iconGray Kodo, and the two other "great" versions, you get the full set of six kodos from a single vendor
  • Contributes to mount achievements — every new mount in the collection counts toward achievement trackers
  • Account-wide collection — once purchased, the mount appears in the collection journal of all your Horde characters, regardless of race and class

Requirements and prerequisites

For Harb Clampshell to even show you the Game iconGreat Brown Kodo in his goods list, you must meet two sets of conditions at once. The first applies to all Horde players, the second only to non-Taurens.

General requirements

  • Faction: Horde only. The Alliance cannot buy the mount under any conditions or through any intermediaries
  • Character level: at least 10. This is the same threshold for learning the first tier of riding
  • Riding skill: Game iconApprentice Riding. Before patch 9.0.1, Game iconJourneyman Riding and level 40 were required — now the basic skill is enough
  • 10 gold in your bags. With the exalted discount — 8 gold

Requirements for non-Taurens

If you play an Orc, Troll, Undead, Blood Elf, Goblin, Horde Pandaren, or any Allied Race, in addition to the general conditions you need Exalted with the Thunder Bluff faction. Without this reputation the vendor will not show the "great" kodos in his assortment, although the basic versions remain available to all Horde races regardless of reputation.

  • Taurens and Highmountain Taurens buy the mount right away and at a discount thanks to their racial bonus
  • Everyone else must first raise their reputation with Thunder Bluff to "Exalted"

Where the vendor is located

The kodo vendor Harb Clampshell stands in Bloodhoof Village in the central part of Mulgore, on the western edge of the settlement. Several kodo models of different colors graze in front of him — a landmark that is hard to miss even on a first visit.

At max level it is most convenient to get here through the portals from Orgrimmar.

Step-by-step guide to buying the mount

  1. Prepare your character. Make sure you have at least 10 gold in your account and that your character has reached level 10
  2. Learn riding. Approach any Horde riding trainer (easiest in Orgrimmar) and learn Game iconApprentice Riding
  3. For non-Taurens — earn Exalted. Raise your reputation with Thunder Bluff to "Exalted". Farming methods are in the next section
  4. Open the trade dialog with Harb Clampshell. In the goods list find the Game iconGreat Brown Kodo and purchase it
  5. Use the item. Right-click it in your bag — the mount will be learned and automatically added to the mount collection journal (Shift+P)
  6. Summon the mount with a hotkey or the icon on your action bar

How to get Exalted with Thunder Bluff

If you do not play a Tauren, you will have to earn reputation with Thunder Bluff from scratch. The fastest way is a combination of a tabard and runs through old dungeons.

The fast way — tabard and dungeons

The most convenient way to earn reputation is to wear a themed tabard and clear dungeons of the appropriate level.

  1. Head to Thunder Bluff and buy the Game iconThunder Bluff Tabard from Brave Tuho. The cost is a few gold
  2. Put on the tabard and head into any random-mode dungeon at your level. All damage dealt to mobs and bosses will be converted into reputation with Thunder Bluff
  3. The optimal options are classic dungeons, where there are many mobs and they die quickly
  4. Continue until you reach "Exalted" status. This usually takes 10–20 runs depending on your level and the dungeon

Mulgore and Thunder Bluff quests

An alternative way is to complete the Tauren starting quests in Mulgore and the Thunder Bluff story line. Completing these zones in full gives a significant reputation boost and combines well with dungeon runs. If you recently created an Allied Race character or leveled a new alt — quests will be the most natural way to gain the first reputation levels.

Turning in cloth

Another working method is turning in stacks of cloth to the Thunder Bluff emissaries in the capital. For stacks of Wool, Silk, Mageweave, and Runecloth you get 350–500 reputation each. In terms of speed it is no rival to the tabard, but it is handy if the cloth is already sitting in your bank with nowhere to go.

Tips

1

Do not spend the riding skill separately for the epic kodos — after patch 9.0.1 the "great" kodos do not require spell_nature_swiftnessJourneyman Riding. The basic "Apprentice" skill is enough for 100% speed. Do not fall for outdated guides that still list level 40 and the old skill rank

2

Farm reputation first, then go to the vendor — Harb Clampshell only shows the "great" kodos at Exalted. If you arrive at Honored or Revered, you will waste time on the trip and return with nothing

3

Buy all three great kodos at once — the logistics of the trip to Mulgore are the same, and the 20 gold difference between one and three mounts at max level is unnoticeable

4

Keep your hearthstone in Thunder Bluff if you are actively collecting Horde racial mounts. From there it is equally convenient to walk to the Tauren vendor and to the reputation emissaries

5

The Thunder Bluff Tabard is a universal tool for beginner collectors. You simultaneously gain reputation, collect old transmog sets, and earn gold from dungeons, and once you reach Exalted you return to Mulgore for all six kodos at once

6

Do not confuse the brown and gray kodo in the vendor list — the models in the sale window run one after another and it is easy to skip past the right coloring. When buying, go by the item name, not the icon

7

The mount is saved account-wide — as soon as one character obtains the ability_mount_kodo_03Great Brown Kodo, it appears in the collection journal of all your Horde characters, regardless of race and class
