Overview

Great Sea Ray

Game iconGreat Sea Ray is a rare aquatic mount added in patch 8.0 of the Battle for Azeroth expansion. It is an elegant sea ray with a turquoise-green coloration, a color variation of the Darkwater Skate. The mount is obtained by fishing in the open (salt) waters of Kul Tiras, Zandalar, and Mechagon.

The Great Sea Ray belongs to the category of aquatic mounts — it can only be summoned in water. Your character rides on the back of the ray and glides smoothly through the water, making it one of the most stylish ways to travel underwater.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rarity — the chance to catch the Great Sea Ray is approximately 0.03%. It is one of the rarest fishing-related mounts, and owning it highlights your collection
  • Achievement — catching it yourself rewards you with the Catchin' Some Rays achievement. Buying the mount from the auction house does not grant the achievement
  • Unique model — the turquoise-green ray with its smooth movement animation stands out among other aquatic mounts. Its graceful "wing" flaps create an impressive visual effect
  • Available to all characters — once learned, the mount becomes available on every character on your account
  • Sellable — the item is bind-on-equip, so it can be sold on the auction house or given to another player. This also means you can buy the mount if you don't want to spend time fishing

How to Obtain

The Great Sea Ray is caught by fishing in the open (sea) waters of the Battle for Azeroth expansion zones. No specific Fishing skill level is required, but a higher skill reduces the number of failed casts and increases farming efficiency.

  1. Make sure your character has learned the Fishing skill. If not, visit a profession trainer in any major city
  2. Travel to one of the zones of Kul Tiras or Zandalar
  3. Find a stretch of open (sea, salt) water — coastline, dock, or open sea
  4. Cast your fishing pole and catch fish. The Great Sea Ray drops randomly from any successful catch
  5. When the Game iconGreat Sea Ray item appears in your bag, right-click it to learn the mount

Where to Fish — Best Locations

The Great Sea Ray can be caught in any sea water of the Battle for Azeroth zones. Below are the zones where players have most often reported successful catches.

Kul Tiras (Alliance)

  • Tiragarde Sound — the coastline around Boralus. Convenient thanks to its proximity to the bank, auction house, and mailbox. Fish right from the harbor docks
  • Stormsong Valley — the northern coast of the zone. Plenty of open water with minimal aggressive enemies
  • Drustvar — the southwestern coast. A less popular location, which can be an advantage when competing for fishing spots

Zandalar (Horde)

  • Zuldazar — the coastline around Dazar'alor. According to community reports, the highest number of successful catches has been recorded here
  • Vol'dun — the western coast and the dried-up lake above the Vulpera Hideaway (coordinates ~56, 39). One of the most convenient spots — few mobs, a short path from the flight point
  • Nazmir — the southern coast of the zone

Mechagon

  • Mechagon Island — the island's coastline. According to Wowhead, it is the second most frequent catch zone after Zuldazar

Farm Optimization

Increasing Fishing Skill

Although there is no minimum skill requirement, a high Fishing skill reduces the amount of "junk" when casting and speeds up the process. Use the following items:

  • Fishing hat — gear that boosts the skill
  • Reinforced fishing pole — use the best available pole to increase the skill

Choosing a Location

  • Fish near your faction's capital city (Boralus for the Alliance, Dazar'alor for the Horde) so you have access to the bank and auction house between sessions
  • Choose spots with no aggressive enemies nearby — this avoids unnecessary interruptions
  • Open sea water is preferable to fishing pools and inland bodies of water

Parallel Income

While farming, you will catch various fish. This fish can be sold on the auction house — it is used in cooking and brings in extra income.

Alternative — Buying from the Auction House

If you don't want to spend time fishing, the Great Sea Ray can be bought from the auction house. The price depends on the server and usually ranges from 200,000 to 500,000 gold. Keep in mind that buying it does not earn you the achievement.

Tips

1

Fish only in sea water — the Great Sea Ray cannot be caught in inland (fresh) bodies of water. Make sure your bobber is in open sea water, not in a river or lake

2

Don't fish from fishing pools — according to the community, fishing pools (special circles of fish on the water's surface) have their own loot table, which the Great Sea Ray most likely does not appear in. Cast your line into ordinary open water

3

Stock up on patience — with a 0.03% chance, you may need anywhere from 3,000 to 7,000 or more casts. That's dozens of hours of fishing. Spread the farm over several days to avoid burnout

4

Use addons — the FishingBuddy addon automates part of the fishing process (double-click to cast) and tracks catch statistics, which helps you monitor your progress

5

Turn on the sound — when you get a bite, a distinctive sound plays. Many anglers turn on the sound and do other things while waiting for a bite

6

Check the auction house — before starting a long fishing session, check the current price of the Great Sea Ray on your auction house. It may turn out to be more profitable to earn gold another way and simply buy the mount

7

The mount only works in water — remember that the Great Sea Ray belongs to the category of aquatic mounts and cannot be summoned on land. It is perfect for exploring underwater zones and traveling by water, but it won't replace a ground or flying mount
