Reins of the Grey Riding Yak
Overview

Grey Riding Yak is a ground mount added to World of Warcraft with the Mists of Pandaria expansion (patch 5.0.4). It is a slender, long-haired yak of grey coloring, bred specifically for the saddle and faster than its wild kin from the Pandarian peaks. Unlike most mounts, the yak requires no reputation, achievements, or rare drops to purchase — you only need to climb up to Kun-Lai Summit and pay the vendor.
The mount is sold directly by Uncle Bigpocket at the Grummle Bazaar. It is one of the easiest mounts of the Pandaria era — a convenient target for collectors and a great way to add one more entry toward the Lord of the Reins achievement.
Why You Want This Mount
- Easy addition to your mount collection — there are no reputation, quest, or achievement requirements. All you need is 3,000 gold and free access to Pandaria
- Progress toward mount-count achievements — every new mount brings you closer to rewards like Lord of the Reins and the higher tiers for 400+ and 500+ mounts
- A unique yak model — there are only a few yak mounts in the game, and the grey variant stands out with its long, thick fur and calm gait
- A paired mount — the same vendor sells the
Reins of the Blonde Riding Yak. In a single trip to the Grummle Bazaar you can grab both and close out two collection entries at once - Account-wide — after purchase the mount appears in the collection of every character on the account, regardless of faction
How to Reach the Vendor
Uncle Bigpocket is located at the Grummle Bazaar, a small trading settlement in the western part of Kun-Lai Summit. The vendor's coordinates:
Step-by-Step Purchase Guide
- Make sure your character has at least 3,000 gold and has bought at least the basic riding skill
- Travel to Pandaria by any means: the classic portal in the capital, a mage's spell, or a hearthstone
- Open the map, select Kun-Lai Summit, and head to the flight point. From there, go east to the Grummle Bazaar
- Find Uncle Bigpocket at coordinates 65.4, 61.6. Yaks stand tethered next to him
- Open the trade window and buy the
Reins of the Grey Riding Yak for 3,000 gold - Use the item from your bag — the mount will be learned and appear in the ground mounts tab of your collection
Other Mounts from This Vendor
Uncle Bigpocket sells three yaks in total. If you collect mounts, it makes sense to grab them all in a single visit.
| Mount | Price | Features |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 gold | A standard grey-colored ground yak | |
| 3,000 gold | A paired sandy-yellow model | |
| 120,000 gold | A two-seat yak with a repair vendor and a transmogrifier vendor on its back |
The Grand Expedition Yak is one of the most expensive ordinary purchases in the game, but it combines the functions of a mount, gear repair, and a transmogrifier, which makes it a popular choice among raiders and collectors.
Tips
1
Buy both ordinary yaks at once — the grey and the blonde cost 3,000 gold each and are available from the same vendor. A single trip to the Grummle Bazaar adds two entries to your mount collection at once
2
Use a hearthstone set to Binan Village — if you often fly to Pandaria for transmog, reputations, or rare mob hunting, set your hearth nearby. From Binan Village to the vendor is less than a minute on any flying mount
3
You don't need to buy the mount on every character — after use the scroll is bound to the account, and all your heroes gain access to the yak through the collection tab
4
Check your Pandaria flight points — if you haven't been there in a while, some flight points may not be unlocked. The fastest way to reach the Grummle Bazaar is via the Temple of the White Tiger or Binan Village
5
If you don't have 3,000 gold — at max level this sum is easy to gather in an evening through world quests in Midnight, daily campaigns, and selling profession materials
