Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent — How to Get the Mount

Game iconReins of the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent — an extremely rare flying mount added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion (patch 5.0.4). The mount is a majestic cloud serpent with blue-black onyx scales and glowing purple accents. According to the in-game description: "Heavenly onyx cloud serpents are born with purple scales covering their entire body. Over time, their scales darken to the color of onyx."

This mount is considered one of the rarest and most prestigious mounts in World of Warcraft. It drops from the world boss Sha of Anger in Kun-Lai Summit with an incredibly low chance, making it a true gem of any collection.

Why You Want This Mount

  • One of the rarest mounts in the game — owners of this mount can be counted on one hand per server
  • Unique cloud serpent model with a striking onyx-purple coloring that cannot be obtained any other way
  • Can fly: flight speed is 150%, 280%, or 310% depending on your riding skill
  • A symbol of perseverance and luck — obtaining this mount earns respect among collectors
  • Counts toward your total mount collection for achievements

How to Obtain

There are two main ways to get this mount:

1. World boss loot. The primary method is killing Sha of Anger, a world boss in the Kun-Lai Summit zone on the continent of Pandaria. The mount drops as personal loot with an extremely low chance.

2. Black Market Auction House. Game iconReins of the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent periodically appear on the Black Market Auction House from the merchant Madam Goya. The starting bid is 20,000 gold, but due to high competition the final price usually reaches several million gold and can go up to the cap of 9,999,999 gold.

Requirements for Use

  • Character level: 10 and above
  • Riding skill: Apprentice Riding (ground mode) or Expert Riding (flight)
  • The Cloud Serpent Riding skill requirement was removed in patch 6.0.2

How to Reach the Sha of Anger

Sha of Anger is a world boss located in the Kun-Lai Summit zone on the continent of Pandaria. Since patch 7.2.0, the boss spawns in only one location — on the Burlap Trail (coordinates approximately 54, 65).

Route for the Horde

  1. Head to Orgrimmar. Find the Portal Room located at the entrance to the Valley of Strength.
  2. Use the portal to the Jade Forest. The portal will take you to the continent of Pandaria.
  3. Fly to Kun-Lai Summit. Open the map and head north through the Valley of the Four Winds to Kun-Lai Summit. Sha of Anger is in the central-southern part of the zone (54, 65).

Route for the Alliance

  1. Head to Stormwind. Find the Mage Tower in the Mage Quarter.
  2. Use the portal to the Jade Forest. The portal will take you to the continent of Pandaria.
  3. Fly to Kun-Lai Summit. Same as the Horde route — head north to the boss spawn location.

Prerequisites

  • Flying in Pandaria does not require purchasing special skills — standard flying skill is sufficient.
  • At max level (80) you can easily fly to the boss in 2–3 minutes from the Pandaria arrival point.
  • It is recommended to set your hearthstone near the Sha of Anger spawn point for quick returns on alt characters.

Farming Optimization

Weekly Ritual

Sha of Anger is a world boss with a weekly reset. Each of your characters can loot it once per week (on Tuesdays for EU servers). Unlike raid bosses, world bosses have no different difficulty levels, so you only get one attempt per week per character.

How to Increase Your Attempts

The only way to increase attempts is to use as many max-level alt characters as possible.

Characters per week Attempts per week Statistical average (at ~0.5% chance)
1 1 ~4 years
5 5 ~10 months
10 10 ~5 months
15 15 ~3 months

Quick Run

At level 80, Sha of Anger dies in a few seconds. Most time is spent traveling to the boss.

  1. Use your hearthstone or a portal to get near the boss
  2. Kill Sha of Anger (a few seconds)
  3. Check loot
  4. Switch to the next character and repeat

Time per character: 2–5 minutes (including travel). Ten characters will take approximately 30–50 minutes per week.

Recommended Classes for Farming

Class Advantage
Druid Instant flight form, fastest travel to the boss
Mage Teleportation to capital between characters, portal for the group
Monk Zen Pilgrimage for instant travel
Demon Hunter Double jump and glide for faster movement

Tips

1

Sha of Anger spawns every 10–20 minutes. If the boss hasn't appeared yet, wait at the spawn point (54, 65). Typically the wait does not exceed 20 minutes.

2

The boss is accessible to characters of any level. However, loot is only available to characters level 15 and above. At max level you are guaranteed to receive loot.

3

Use the SavedInstances addon. It tracks which characters have already killed world bosses this week, helping you avoid pointless repeat visits.

4

Use the Rarity addon. This addon counts your attempts and displays the statistical probability of getting the mount, helping you track progress.

5

Set your hearthstone near the boss. Bind at the nearest inn (e.g., Binan Village or Mogu'shan Palace) for quick travel on each character.

6

Don't confuse it with other cloud serpents. The game has several cloud serpents with similar names: Reins of the Onyx Cloud Serpent (without "Heavenly") and inv_pandarenserpentmount_lightning_blackReins of the Thundering Onyx Cloud Serpent — these are different mounts with different sources.

7

Watch the Black Market Auction House. If you have several million gold, buying on the BMAH can be significantly faster than weekly farming. BMAH listings refresh daily, but this specific mount appears infrequently.

8

"Collector's Bounty" event. Keep an eye out for the periodic in-game event that increases the drop chance of rare mounts — it can noticeably speed up farming.
