Timber Wolf

Timber Wolf is one of the classic racial mounts of the Horde, added back in the original version of World of Warcraft. It is a large gray-black wolf with thick fur and a characteristic snarl, historically tied to the culture of the Frostwolf clan orcs. In the world's lore, orcs tame timber wolves in the icy foothills of Alterac and the Hillsbrad Foothills, and this very model became one of the standard ones for the riders of Orgrimmar.

Today, in The War Within expansion at the maximum level of 80, the mount is relevant solely as a collectible item. It is purchased to expand a collection, for progress in collection achievements for 50 mounts and for 100 mounts, and also for visual variety — the timber wolf looks great on orc and troll characters styled after the classics.

• Collection value — one of four basic wolves sold by the Orgrimmar breeder. It adds one to your mount counter and closes part of your progress toward collector achievements
• Racial atmosphere — a canonical orc mount that thousands of players started out with back in the original WoW. The ideal choice for roleplay or an old-school transmog look
• Pocket-change price — just 1 gold. This is the cheapest way to quickly raise your mount count early on
• Available from level 10 — you can buy it right after learning the Apprentice Riding skill, without waiting for max level
• Counts toward achievements — it counts in the chain of collection achievements for 10, 25, 50 and 100 mounts
• Account-bound — after purchase the mount appears in the collection of all your characters, including Alliance

If You Play an Orc

1. Level your character up to 10 — the minimum threshold for learning riding in the current version of the game.
2. Open Orgrimmar and head to the Valley of Honor — the northeastern district of the city.
3. Learn the Apprentice Riding skill from the trainer named Kildar for 4 gold. He stands next to the wolf pen.
4. Right there, by the same pen, find Ogunaro Wolfrunner. The coordinates are roughly 61, 35 in the Valley of Honor.
5. Buy the Horn of the Timber Wolf for 1 gold.
6. Open your mount collection (the Shift+P key) and summon the wolf.

If You Play Another Horde Race

For trolls, taurens, undead, blood elves, goblins, Horde pandaren and all allied races, buying wolves requires Exalted reputation with the Orgrimmar faction. That is roughly 42,000 reputation points from the starting level.

1. Buy the Orgrimmar Tabard from Stone Guard Nargol in Orgrimmar — he stands on the Orgrimmar Skyway, the upper observation platform by the flight master
2. Put on the tabard. While you wear it, all reputation earned in dungeons counts toward Orgrimmar
3. Run any suitable Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King dungeon on normal difficulty. The classic choice remains The Botanica in Netherstorm — short, with no difficult bosses and plenty of mobs
4. After clearing it, leave the dungeon and reset it via the character menu: right-click on your portrait — "Reset all instances." Re-enter and repeat
5. Usually 1–2 hours of such farming is enough to go from Friendly to Exalted
6. After reaching Exalted, return to Ogunaro Wolfrunner in the Valley of Honor and buy the Horn of the Timber Wolf

Ogunaro Wolfrunner is the wolf breeder of Orgrimmar. He patrols around the large stone wolf pen in the northern part of the Valley of Honor, next to the Kor'kron guard barracks. If you get lost — listen for the sound of growling wolves; the pen is by the district's northern wall.

Next to Ogunaro stands the riding trainer Kildar, from whom it's convenient to learn the skill right away if you haven't yet.

Wolfrunner trades the full set of Horde racial wolves. If you're building a collection, it makes sense to grab them all in one visit.

The swift wolf versions used to require Journeyman Riding and separate reputation; now they are sold under the same rules — Exalted for non-orcs. If you're already going for the regular wolves, pick up the fast ones too: 70 gold for three mounts is pocket change at level 80.

For non-orc characters, the Orgrimmar Skyway and tabard grinding are the most predictable path. There are two working options:

Dungeon Farming with the Tabard

• Put on the Orgrimmar Tabard, enter Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King dungeons on normal difficulty
• Every killed enemy and every boss grants Orgrimmar reputation
• After the final boss, reset the dungeon and re-enter. At level 80, one run takes 3–5 minutes
• The classic choice is The Botanica in Netherstorm: short, linear, almost without stops

Daily Tournament Quests of the Argent Tournament

• In Icecrown there is the Argent Tournament grounds with daily quests that grant reputation with your home capital of choice
• The method is slower than dungeon farming, but it's suitable if you're already running dailies in that zone

Both methods work in parallel — part of the reputation can be topped up with dailies, the main volume with dungeons.

Each purchase adds a separate mount to the collection and brings you closer to collection achievements:

• Achievement for 10 mounts
• Achievement for 25 mounts
• Achievement for 50 mounts — rewards the Reins of the Albino Drake
• "Leading the Cavalry" — 100 mounts, grants the Red Dragonhawk for the Horde

Buying all seven wolves from Ogunaro is a fast way to raise the counter by 7 positions at once.

• Buy all the wolves at once — in a single visit to Ogunaro spend 4 gold on the regular wolves and 30 gold on the fast ones. These are minimal expenses for a maximum collection boost.
• Non-orcs benefit from grinding reputation at level 80 — at max level, Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King dungeons are cleared in mere minutes, and the tabard provides a steady stream of points.
• Combine reputations — the Orgrimmar tabard only works for Orgrimmar, but if you want to collect wolves, kodos, raptors and other racial mounts, you'll have to grind each capital separately. Better to plan ahead.
• Check your bag for space — seven different items are bought from Ogunaro, so free up at least one slot before your visit.
• Link to the racial mounts achievement — collecting all the Horde wolves is part of the collector track. If you're going for meta-achievements, don't skip the swift versions.
• The mount is shared between characters — a purchased wolf stays in your collection forever and is available on any character of the matching faction. It doesn't display on the Alliance, but the account's mount counter grows.
• Don't confuse them with the Warcraft Draenor dungeons — Ogunaro's wolves have nothing to do with the dire wolves of Warlords of Draenor (Garrison mounts). These are different models and different sources.
