Get Horn of the Vicious War Wolf mount

Horn of the Vicious War Wolf is a ground mount of the Horde faction from the Vicious series, first added to World of Warcraft in patch 4.4.0 of the Cataclysm expansion. It is a powerful war wolf clad in heavy armor, bred by Horde trainers on the orders of Warchief Garrosh Hellscream for PvP battles. The wolf model is bulkier than standard orcish mounts and has a unique coloring that sets apart veterans of the arena and ranked battlegrounds.

The mount is awarded exclusively for success in ranked PvP and remains one of the most recognizable symbols of Horde PvP collectors. The Alliance equivalent is the Reins of the Vicious War Steed.

There are two main ways to add the mount to your collection: earn it as an achievement reward or buy it for a Vicious Saddle from a special vendor in Orgrimmar.

Method 1. Purchase with a Vicious Saddle

This is the most reliable and up-to-date path for The War Within (Season 2) players.

1. Reach level 80 and prepare a Horde character for ranked PvP: gather Crusher-tier gear and learn the talents suited to your specialization
2. Choose between three formats: 2v2 arena, 3v3 arena, or rated battlegrounds (including Blitz). 3v3 or rated battlegrounds are recommended — progress goes faster in them
3. Raise your rating to 1000 and above (the "Combatant" rank). Without this rating, wins do not count toward the seasonal reward bar
4. Fill the ranked PvP bar and receive the seasonal mount of the current season. This is a mandatory step — the Vicious Saddle becomes available only after the bar is filled for the first time
5. Keep winning matches — the bar fills again. For each subsequent fill you receive one Vicious Saddle
6. Fly to Orgrimmar, to the Valley of Strength, to the vendor Deathguard Netharian (coordinates roughly 41.8, 73.0) and exchange the saddle for the Horn of the Vicious War Wolf

Method 2. PvP Achievement Reward

Historically, the mount was awarded upon earning one of the achievements in the Horde veteran series. After completion, a letter with the mount arrived in the mail from Garrosh Hellscream. In the current patch, the Vicious series achievements are no longer tied to specific mounts — the main path of acquisition runs through the saddle exchange, but if you already have the required achievement from an old season, the mount may have appeared in your collection automatically.

Check in the collection interface whether the mount was unlocked earlier. If not, proceed to the first method.

Different formats award a different number of points toward the progress bar. The bar fills completely at 100%.

The conclusion is obvious: for minimal farming time, choose rated battlegrounds. The Blitz format (8v8 rated battlegrounds) also counts and is often faster than standard 10v10 thanks to shorter matches.

To consistently win at a rating of 1000 and above, you need to complete several preparatory steps.

Gear

• Gather "Crusher"-rank PvP gear through Honor point battles
• Upgrade items as your rating grows — at 1000+ rating, higher upgrade levels are available
• Invest in a Vicious Saddle only after obtaining the seasonal mount — before that, the bar goes toward the seasonal reward

Group

• For 3v3 and rated battlegrounds, find regular teammates — random searches through the automatic group finder often lose to coordinated teams
• Use voice chat; this is the only reliable way to coordinate
• The wow.gg community, forums, and PvP community Discord servers will help you find a suitable group

Class Choice

All classes are capable of obtaining the mount, but some specializations are traditionally easier to start with at the "Combatant" level. In the current patch, Season 2 of The War Within, Destruction Warlock, Enhancement Shaman, Mistweaver Monk, and Havoc Demon Hunter perform well in ranked PvP. This is not a strict rule — play the specialization you know best.

Weekly Cycle

1. Each week complete Honor point quests and win in random epic battlegrounds for gear
2. Queue for rating as a team or through solo shuffle / Blitz
3. Track the seasonal reward bar in the PvP interface
4. After obtaining the seasonal mount the bar resets — from then on, each fill gives one Vicious Saddle

Alternative Saddle Rewards

One saddle can be exchanged for only one mount, so plan what to buy first. The vendor Deathguard Netharian also sells other Horde mounts of the Vicious series from past expansions: war boars, a raptor, a nether drake, a drake, and many others. If the Horn of the Vicious War Wolf is your first mount in the series, it is sensible to take it right away: it is one of the most recognizable and sets the theme for the collection.
