Overview

Hungering Spineripper

Game iconHungering Spineripper is a one-handed dagger of rare quality, added to World of Warcraft with The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a short, curved blade with a dark bone hilt and a greenish-gray edge, designed in the "ethereal" style characteristic of Outland dungeons. The model belongs to the early TBC daggers and is easily recognized by its predatory, slightly serrated silhouette.

The dagger suits every class that uses this weapon type for transmogrification: rogues, druids, priests, mages, warlocks, demon hunters, and shamans. The item was originally intended for level 70 and is item level 115 gear, but that doesn't matter for the appearance: once obtained, the look is permanently unlocked in your account collection.

The dagger's main value is purely visual: the compact model has no bulky effects, looks good in both hands, and doesn't draw attention away from sets that emphasize armor.

Source

Hungering Spineripper drops in the The Arcatraz dungeon, one of the satellite stations of the Tempest Keep complex. The dungeon is located in the Netherstorm zone and was added in The Burning Crusade expansion.

The dagger is on the loot table of the final boss, Harbinger Skyriss. This is rare (blue) loot, so it doesn't drop from every kill; collecting the appearance usually takes several runs.

Key farming details:

  • The boss is located in the far part of the dungeon, and the fight with him opens through a series of mini-encounters with imprisoned enemies.
  • The dagger drops on both normal and heroic difficulty: there's no difference for the appearance, so take whichever is faster.
  • There are no limits on the number of attempts: the dungeon can be re-entered with no weekly lockout.
  • The entrance to the Arcatraz is sealed by a grate. It can be opened by a rogue with sufficient lockpicking skill or by any player who has completed the Arcatraz key quest chain in Netherstorm. One person with the key is enough for the whole group.
  • To reach the platform with the dungeon portal, you need a flying mount: the Arcatraz station hovers above the ground.

At the current max level, the dungeon can be cleared solo in a few minutes, so farming the appearance doesn't require a group.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It fits The Burning Crusade-era armor sets with a dark green and gray-steel palette: the dagger doesn't clash with the "ethereal" theme of Outland.
  • It looks good with light leather rogue sets where the focus is on the armor rather than the weapon: the compact blade doesn't overload the look.
  • It harmonizes with appearances in natural green tones, for example druid sets that emphasize a natural color scheme.
  • It contrasts with the light cloth armor of priests and mages: the dark blade provides a noticeable, slightly sinister accent.
  • It suits dual-wielding two daggers: the symmetrical silhouette reads well in both hands.

Tips

1

Take heroic difficulty only if it clears faster than normal: the mode doesn't affect the appearance, only the speed of the runs matters.

2

In a single Arcatraz run you can collect two daggers at once: alongside the Hungering Spineripper, Harbinger Skyriss's loot includes the epic Sinister Blade of the Betrayer.

3

If your main character can't pick locks, the easiest way is to farm the dungeon on a rogue, who opens the entrance grate without a key.

4

The Arcatraz key quest chain is completed once and permanently opens the entrance for that character: it's a one-time investment of time.

5

At max level the dungeon is cleared solo, so you don't need to plan a group for farming the appearance.

6

Don't forget a flying mount: the dungeon entrance is on a floating platform, and you can't reach it without flight.

7

The appearance unlocks in your transmog collection right after you obtain the item: you don't have to wear the dagger to unlock it.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
