WoW Forever Marksmanship Hunter — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Ranged damage. In Forever, Marksmanship leans on ranged weapon damage, deliberate windows for long casts, and the choice between pet support and playing without one. Careful Aim and the talents around
Serpent Sting make Intellect and prepping the target useful for more than just your mana bar.
The tree has become noticeably more decisive: a long Aimed Shot has appeared, and
Aimed Shot now conflicts not with
Arcane Shot, but with
Multi-Shot.
Class Changes
Lone Wolf and the Pet
Lone Wolf increases the damage of all attacks by 20% while no pet is active. Where keeping a pet is awkward, this is a direct gain; in solo play against elite enemies, a beast that holds the target is usually more useful.
The subtlety is that the bonus also applies to melee, whereas
Mortal Shots boosts only the critical damage of shots,
Ranged Weapon Specialization only ranged weapon damage, and
Barrage names
Multi-Shot,
Aimed Shot and
Volley specifically. That means a melee build can take Lone Wolf, but will get nothing from those talents. And the reverse: Focused Fire requires a living pet, so it does not work together with Lone Wolf.
Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot and Sniper Shot
The classic
Aimed Shot had a three-second cast and shared its cooldown with
Arcane Shot. In Forever, the third rank casts in two seconds, and its six-second cooldown is shared with
Multi-Shot. This changes the shot choice: now
Aimed Shot delays
Multi-Shot rather than
Arcane Shot.
Barrage boosts both abilities and
Volley, even though
Aimed Shot is no longer purchased with a talent.
Sniper Shot is a new ability: four seconds of base cast time, a 15-second cooldown, and a range from 8 to 35 meters. It is best started when you have a clear line of fire and enough time before your next forced movement.
Hawk Eye increases ranged weapon range and gives you more freedom in positioning.
Multi-Shot and
Volley are not used on crowd-controlled targets.
Scatter Shot disorients for four seconds and disables your attack, but existing periodic damage and allied hits will still break it.
Serpent Sting as a Resource Source
In classic, raid damage rested on
Auto Shot,
Aimed Shot and
Multi-Shot, while
Serpent Sting did not scale with attack power and occupied one of the sixteen effect slots.
In Forever, the sting has gained a role in mana economy. Rapid Recuperation grants regeneration during casting for 15 seconds when
Serpent Sting hits a target, and a separate recovery effect when you spend Rapid Killing. Rapid Killing itself reduces the cooldown of
Rapid Fire and procs when you kill a significant enemy or when a target dies with your
Serpent Sting on it, empowering your next shot for 20 seconds.
The practical takeaway: apply
Serpent Sting to a target that will survive its damage. On a boss with no adds, the sting's regeneration keeps working even without kill procs.
Careful Aim turns Intellect into attack power, and
Efficiency reduces the cost of shots, stings and melee abilities. Improved Stings additionally shortens the cooldown of Viper Sting and extends Scorpid Sting — these are separate bonuses, unrelated to a damage boost for
Serpent Sting.
Key Ability Overview
Aimed Shot
Aimed Shot at the third rank has a two-second cast and a six-second cooldown shared with
Multi-Shot. The main source of large burst damage.
Sniper Shot
Sniper Shot is the longest shot in the arsenal: four seconds of base cast time on a 15-second cooldown. It requires a clear line and time, but it hits hard.
Multi-Shot and Volley
Multi-Shot and
Volley cover several targets, and
Barrage boosts both along with
Aimed Shot. They are not used on crowd-controlled enemies.
Serpent Sting
Serpent Sting is no longer secondary: it triggers Rapid Recuperation and takes part in proccing Rapid Killing.
Control and Distance
Scatter Shot disorients for four seconds,
Concussive Shot slows,
Freezing Trap and
Frost Trap hold the enemy,
Feign Death drops threat, and
Disengage breaks away from the target.
Buffs
Rapid Fire speeds up your shooting,
Trueshot Aura boosts the group's attack power, and
Hunter's Mark sits on the priority target.
Talent Overview
The Marksmanship tree holds 52 points on a budget of 51, so one point had to be cut:
Improved Concussive Shot is taken at four ranks instead of five. This is a purely PvP slow talent, and in a raid it is the first to be dropped; for arena, the logic is reversed.
This is not a ready-made leveling build. It is only an example of ability distribution for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
Marksmanship is the tree most dependent on the ranged weapon:
Ranged Weapon Specialization at five points gives a direct boost to its damage, and
Mortal Shots boosts the critical damage of shots specifically. Upgrading your bow, crossbow or gun matters more here than almost any other slot.
A slow ranged weapon is preferable to a fast one:
Aimed Shot and Sniper Shot are calculated from weapon damage, so high damage per shot works better than frequent weak ones.
A melee weapon in this tree is a set of stats. The exception is a melee Lone Wolf build: the 20% bonus applies to all attacks, but
Mortal Shots,
Ranged Weapon Specialization and
Barrage do not work in such a build, and that has to be factored in ahead of time.
As for stats: Agility gives attack power and crit, Hit covers both shots and traps, and Intellect is no longer junk — Careful Aim turns it into attack power, and that changes how you evaluate items with Intellect.
