WoW Forever Survival Hunter — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Melee and control. In Classic, Survival supported ranged builds through talents like
Lightning Reflexes and provided traps alongside defensive melee skills. In Forever the tree gains a full-fledged melee attack sequence: a new attack,
Mongoose Bite procs on a marked target, and bleeds.
This is no longer a set of supporting talents but a self-contained playstyle right up against the enemy.
Class Changes
Mark, Bite and Bleed
Classic
Mongoose Bite required you to dodge an attack. Expose Weakness offers a different path: your attacks against a target with
Hunter's Mark activate
Mongoose Bite for five seconds.
The difference is fundamental. Previously the bite was a reaction to an enemy attack, so in a boss fight where the tank holds the target it was nearly impossible to use. Now it is enough to keep the mark on your target and react to the window.
Rending Strikes make
Mongoose Bite apply a bleed for 21 seconds equal to 40% of the bite's damage. Durable targets let this damage tick out in full; constantly swapping onto finishable enemies wastes bleed time.
Runner's Strike adds an instant attack for 100% of melee weapon damage with an eight-second cooldown.
Raptor Strike was already a reaction-independent attack in Classic, so the new ability and the triggered bites expand the melee arsenal rather than building it from scratch.
Weapons and Melee Crit
Savage Strikes increases the critical strike chance of all melee abilities. Predator's Fang increases melee critical damage and off-hand weapon damage.
The hunter could dual-wield in Classic too, but the off-hand bonus only appeared now and directly rewards constant melee. Comparing a two-handed weapon against a pair of one-handers must be done on specific items: the damage of a single hit versus the number of swings plus the off-hand bonus.
Counterattack remains an attack that triggers after a parry, holds the target for five seconds and now includes weapon damage.
Deflection and
Deterrence help activate it when you are being hit. But against a boss held by the tank it is better to stand behind it and take bites through Expose Weakness rather than expose yourself for defensive procs.
Traps and Mana Between Hits
Resourcefulness reduces the cost of traps and melee abilities, and your critical strikes can trigger mana restoration while casting.
Surefooted adds hit and reduces movement-impairing effects, which helps you stay in melee.
Entrapment now immobilizes the target when a trap triggers, instead of the Classic chance to root.
Clever Traps extends
Freezing Trap and
Frost Trap and boosts the damage of the fire and
Explosive Trap traps. Survivalist Discipline shortens the cooldown of traps and
Deterrence, while Survival Tactics increases the hit of traps and
Feign Death.
An important caveat: in Classic you set a trap by leaving combat, usually through
Feign Death. Talents for cooldown and hit do not by themselves overturn that rule. Before pulling, place control on the enemy's path and keep trap damage away from targets you must not wake.
Core Ability Descriptions
Mongoose Bite
Mongoose Bite with the Expose Weakness talent is activated by your attacks against a target with
Hunter's Mark, and Rending Strikes turns it into a source of bleeding for 21 seconds.
Runner's Strike
Runner's Strike is an instant attack for 100% of melee weapon damage with an eight-second cooldown. The backbone of a rotation right up against the enemy.
Raptor Strike and Counterattack
Raptor Strike remains the baseline melee attack,
Counterattack triggers after a parry, holds the target for five seconds and now deals weapon damage.
Traps
Freezing Trap and
Frost Trap provide control,
Explosive Trap deals area damage.
Entrapment immobilizes the target on trigger,
Clever Traps boosts duration and damage.
Defense and Mobility
Deterrence increases dodge and parry,
Deflection adds parry,
Lightning Reflexes adds dodge,
Survivalist adds a health pool.
Feign Death drops threat,
Disengage breaks distance.
Ranged
Shots have not gone anywhere:
Auto Shot,
Arcane Shot,
Serpent Sting and
Multi-Shot remain in the arsenal, but the tree's talents do not enhance them.
Talents Overview
The Survival tree fits 52 points into a budget of 51, so one point is cut from
Entrapment — it is taken at four ranks out of five. This is a PvP talent for trap immobilization; in a raid it is dropped first.
This is not a ready-made leveling build. It is only an example of ability distribution for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
Survival in Forever is the only hunter tree where the melee weapon defines damage rather than merely providing stats. Predator's Fang directly increases melee critical damage and off-hand damage.
Hence the main choice: a two-handed weapon or a pair of one-handers. A two-hander delivers greater damage per hit, which is good for Runner's Strike and
Raptor Strike, which scale from weapon damage. A pair of one-handers gives more swings and enables the off-hand bonus from Predator's Fang. There is no universal answer — you have to compare specific items.
The ranged weapon in this build remains a stat stick: neither
Lethal Shots nor
Ranged Weapon Specialization from the Marksmanship tree are taken here.
Among stats, agility is the priority — it gives attack power, crit and dodge, which works for
Counterattack. Hit is doubly valuable:
Surefooted and Survival Tactics provide it separately for attacks and for traps.
