WoW Forever Arcane Mage — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Ranged, spell damage. In classic, the Arcane tree mostly handed its buffs to a
Frostbolt build. In Forever it gained a rotation of its own: Arcane Blast builds up a buff, and another spell or free, accelerated
Arcane Missiles closes the combo. The spec's central question is how much mana and stationary time you are willing to spend before switching targets.
Class Changes
Build exactly as many stacks as you can spend
Arcane Blast increases the damage of all your other spells by 10% per cast, stacks up to four times, and lasts eight seconds or until you cast any other damage spell. Each additional stack raises the cost of Arcane Blast itself by 175%. Arcane Blast does not empower its own damage with this effect — the extra mana buys damage specifically for the finishing spell.
Decide in advance what you will finish the combo with.
Arcane Missiles keep you in the arcane school, while a fire or frost spell pays off in another school. An instant spell lets you spend the stacks before a forced move, but it uses the same cast time you could have saved for a bigger cast. On an almost-dead target the extra cast just wastes mana: the target will not live to see the payout.
Take fewer than four stacks when the fight is ending, a move is coming up, or mana recovery is still far off. And spend your stacks before the eight seconds run out.
Missile Barrage grants a cheap out
Missile Barrage procs with a 40% chance from Arcane Blast and a 20% chance from
Fireball,
Frostbolt, and Frostfire Bolt. Your next
Arcane Missiles lose half their duration, become completely free, and launch a missile every half second. Damage arrives sooner, you have to stand still less, and no mana is spent at all.
Grab the free missiles when another Arcane Blast would eat the mana you need for the rest of the fight. Because the effect can also be caught from fire and frost spells, Missile Barrage supports multi-school play rather than demanding a Blast before every cast. At the same time,
Arcane Missiles remain a channeled spell: begin it where you can carry the channel through to the end.
Improved Arcane Missiles protects
Arcane Missiles and Arcane Blast from being knocked back by damage. It does not grant immunity to enemy interrupts, and the shortened channel does not let you move while casting.
Weigh abilities against mana and threat
Arcane Power gives 30% to spell damage and 30% to their cost for 15 seconds. Turn it on when the target is sure to stay available and the tank already holds threat. Combined with the expensive Blast cast time, mana drains very fast, so count not the duration but the number of useful casts you can fit in before a forced pause.
Presence of Mind makes your next mage spell with a cast time under ten seconds instant. It is a deliberate cast on the move or a quick damage delivery — a separate tool, unrelated to the channel speed-up from Missile Barrage. You can also use it to instantly cast
Polymorph when an enemy needs to be taken out of the fight right now.
Arcane Concentration grants free spells,
Arcane Meditation keeps mana regeneration going while casting.
Arcane Subtlety reduces threat from the arcane school, but that reduction does not apply when you finish the combo with a fire or frost spell. When playing across multiple schools, watch not only the other school's damage but also its threat.
Core Ability Rundown
Arcane Blast
Arcane Blast is a setup spell. Each cast empowers your other spells and makes itself more expensive, so counting stacks is the tree's core mechanic.
Arcane Missiles
Arcane Missiles is the in-school arcane finisher and the main recipient of the Missile Barrage effect. It is a channeled spell, so begin it where you can stand through it.
Fireball and Frostbolt
Fireball and
Frostbolt work as other-school fillers: they benefit from the Blast stacks and can trigger Missile Barrage themselves.
Utility Spells
Counterspell interrupts an enemy cast,
Polymorph takes an enemy out of the fight,
Remove Lesser Curse removes curses,
Blink and
Frost Armor help you survive,
Evocation restores mana.
Defense and Mana
Mana Shield turns mana into damage absorption,
Mage Armor grants resistance and mana regeneration,
Dampen Magic and
Amplify Magic tune incoming magic damage and healing to the specific fight.
Talent Overview
The Arcane tree holds 47 points on a budget of 51. It is taken in full, and the four spare points go into the first tier of Fire: Incineration at three points adds 6% to the crit chance of Arcane Blast,
Fire Blast, and
Scorch, while Burning Soul at one point shortens the cooldown of
Fire Blast.
This is not a finished leveling build. It is only an example ability layout for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
A mage's weapon is a set of stats, not a source of damage. A staff or a combo of a one-hander with an off-hand is judged by spell power, intellect, and crit; damage per hit plays no role.
Spell power works on the whole combo at once: it empowers both Arcane Blast and
Arcane Missiles, and the other-school fillers. Intellect is more valuable here than usual, because each Blast stack grows more expensive by 175%, and
Arcane Mind adds a percentage on top of it. Crit is tapped by
Arcane Concentration and Arcane Impact.
A wand during mana recovery is no small thing:
Wand Specialization at two points makes it a noticeable source of damage in the pauses when you are saving mana for the next combo.
Spell hit is worth keeping in mind separately:
Arcane Focus covers only the arcane school, while Incineration taken in Fire boosts crit but not accuracy. If you finish the combo with an other-school spell, a shortfall in hit will be felt right there.
