WoW Forever Fire Mage — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Ranged, spell damage. Fire turns direct critical strikes into faster
Pyroblast casts while sustaining ignite effects and its own target vulnerability from
Scorch. The tree loves long time on a durable target, and
Fire Blast and
Blast Wave cover the moments when a long cast simply does not fit.
Class Changes
Firestarter and Cast Windows
Firestarter builds from non-periodic critical strikes of
Fireball, Frostfire Bolt,
Fire Blast, and
Scorch. Each charge reduces the cast time of
Pyroblast by 25%, up to three charges, lasting 15 seconds. There is no requirement to crit back-to-back here. Three charges give a 75% reduction, but do not make
Pyroblast instant.
Watch not only the charges but also a free window to cast. Waiting for one more crit only makes sense if you can actually get the spell off afterward. If movement is coming soon or the target is about to die, it is better to release
Pyroblast earlier and not at full speed; on a stable target you have room to finish the stacks. A short cast is still a cast: you cannot fire it while moving.
Periodic crits do not build the stacks — that is stated directly in the condition.
Pyroblast itself is also missing from the list of sources: the charges come only from the four listed spells.
Scorch and Combustion Demand Target Loyalty
Improved Scorch applies a personal fire vulnerability: each charge raises your fire damage against that target by 3%, up to five charges, for 30 seconds. At the first rank, the chance for
Scorch to apply it is 33%, so five casts do not guarantee five charges. In Classic, fire vulnerability worked for the whole group — in Forever each mage builds their own personal bonus.
Casts of
Scorch are an investment in future fire damage. It pays off on a durable priority target and barely pays off against an enemy that will die during the ramp-up. Switching targets costs more than the time to approach: a new enemy does not inherit your work on the previous one.
Combustion raises your fire crit chance by 10% with each fire spell hit and ends after four non-periodic fire crits. In Classic, three were enough. The end condition counts direct crits — periodic ones do not count toward it. Turn on the ability when access to the target will not be interrupted and the growing crit will have time to work together with the Firestarter charges.
Ignite Damage, Burst, and Close-Range Area Damage
Ignite adds a burn after fire spell crits, and
Pyroblast combines instant damage with a burn over 12 seconds. Periodic crits make the leftover burn from
Pyroblast part of your crit investment, not a nice extra after the hit. An early recast of
Pyroblast overwrites the remaining ticks: weigh that loss against a new direct hit and the leftover Firestarter — waiting for every tick is not always right. On a dying enemy, choose the damage that will land in time rather than the full
Pyroblast calculation over the whole duration.
Blazing Speed lowers threat from the fire school and protects casts from being knocked back by damage. Before area damage, let the tank gather the enemies.
Improved Flamestrike pays off on a dense group, and
Blast Wave hits around you and stuns enemies for six seconds — but closing to range on an uncontrolled pack trades safe distance for immediate risk.
Burning Trail reduces the cooldown of
Fire Blast and, after killing a significant enemy, raises the crit chance of the next
Fire Blast for 20 seconds. This helps keep tempo between targets. If movement is about to begin, save
Fire Blast: it lets you deal damage on the move.
Core Ability Descriptions
Pyroblast
Pyroblast is the tree's main payoff cast: instant damage plus a burn over 12 seconds. Its cast time is reduced by Firestarter.
Fireball and Scorch
Fireball is the main filler and a source of Firestarter charges.
Scorch builds your personal target fire vulnerability through
Improved Scorch and also builds the stacks at the same time.
Fire Blast and Blast Wave
Fire Blast is instant, works on the move, and is accelerated by Burning Trail.
Blast Wave deals damage around you and stuns — a short-range tool, use it deliberately.
Area Damage
Flamestrike pays off on a dense group with
Improved Flamestrike, and
Arcane Explosion hits around the mage. Wait for the tank to gather the enemies.
Utility Spells
Counterspell interrupts a cast,
Polymorph removes a target from combat,
Remove Lesser Curse removes curses,
Blink,
Ice Armor, and
Mana Shield help you survive, and
Evocation restores mana.
Talent Overview
The Fire tree holds 46 points on a 51-point budget. It is taken in full, and the five free points go into the first tier of Frost:
Elemental Precision at five points gives 5% hit for fire and frost spells — the very stat that the Fire tree itself does not provide.
This is not a finished leveling build. It is only an example distribution of abilities for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
A Fire mage's weapon is judged by its stats, not by its swing damage. A staff or a pairing of a one-hander with an off-hand is chosen by spell power, crit, and intellect.
Crit matters more for this tree than for the others: on it depend
Ignite, the Firestarter charges, mana return through
Master of Elements, and the very ending of
Combustion. An item with crit works in several places at once here, not only raising average damage.
Spell power boosts both direct damage and the burn, so it stays the main stat. Intellect gives a mana reserve for long fights, and part of the cost is returned by
Master of Elements.
The Fire tree gives no spell hit at all — you have to make it up with gear or five points in
Elemental Precision. A miss hurts Fire more than usual: a miss not only loses damage, but also fails to build the Firestarter charges.
