WoW Forever Frost Mage — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
Ranged, damage and control. Frost keeps its slows, shields and efficient casts, but gains Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost. The new effect opens a damage window even against an enemy that cannot be frozen, while true freezes are still needed to keep foes at range and pull excess attention off your allies.
Class Changes
Tell a frozen enemy apart from a merely slowed one
Ice Lance deals 300% more damage to a frozen target. A slow from cold effects is not a freeze in itself. In classic,
Shatter also required a genuinely frozen target — it was never a permanent crit bonus against any slowed enemy.
Real windows are created by
Frost Nova and
Frostbite, while Fingers of Frost lets your next spell treat the target as frozen. At the first rank that is a single cast, and the effect lasts 15 seconds.
Shatter increases the crit chance of all your spells against a frozen target, so the choice of your next spell matters: Ice Lance has its own freeze multiplier, while a regular cast can make use of
Shatter if you have time to land it. At the first rank, plan for one spell rather than a two-cast combo.
Winter's Chill in Forever increases the crit chance specifically of your own Ice Lance and
Frostbolt against the target. In classic the debuff raised frost-spell crit chance more broadly. Here this part of the tree works for your own attacks, and you can no longer promise the raid a general frost-crit service.
Keep the pack together
Improved Blizzard adds a slow to the
Blizzard channel, but at the third rank that is 40% for 1.5 seconds versus 65% for two seconds in classic — before
Permafrost. Familiar ranges and retreat timing need more of a buffer here.
Permafrost improves the duration and strength of the slow, while
Arctic Reach increases the range of
Blizzard and the area of
Frost Nova and
Cone of Cold. Use that buffer to finish the channel before retreating.
Frostbite can freeze individual enemies when your slows proc. Against a chaser this helps, but irregular freezes break up a tight pack: some enemies stop, others keep moving. Pick your control talents for the pulls you plan to make, rather than assuming an extra root always improves your area damage.
In a group, wait for the gather and for threat to settle before you start the channel. Keep enemies under control outside your damage zone. A slowed, gathered pack is far easier for the tank to bring back than one scattered by premature damage and random freezes.
Defense preserves useful casts
Frost Channeling reduces both the cost of frost spells and the threat they generate. On long fights and over a chain of dungeon pulls this is a steady gain: fewer pauses to recover and more freedom to cast without pulling enemies onto yourself.
Ice Shards increases the critical damage bonus of frost spells, so crit here is not only about control.
Ice Barrier absorbs damage and keeps hits from pushing back and delaying your casts while it holds. Put it up before incoming pressure, not after pushback has already spoiled several casts.
Ice Block protects you completely, but forbids attacking, moving and casting — it is time for survival, not for damage.
Cold Snap instantly refreshes your other frost spells. Decide in advance what the pull needs more: another defensive or another piece of control. A second
Frost Nova or a second
Ice Barrier is often exactly the time you were missing to bring back a scattered pack.
Core Ability Descriptions
Frostbolt
Frostbolt is the branch's main cast. It is sped up by
Improved Frostbolt, and its crit against the target is raised by
Winter's Chill.
Ice Lance
An instant spell with a 300% multiplier against a frozen target. Use it in the window from
Frost Nova,
Frostbite or Fingers of Frost.
Frost Nova and Cone of Cold
Frost Nova freezes enemies around you and creates a window for
Shatter.
Cone of Cold deals damage and slows; the area of both is widened by
Arctic Reach.
Blizzard
Blizzard is your main area damage.
Improved Blizzard adds a slow,
Arctic Reach adds range, but the channel needs to be seen through to the end.
Defense and Control
Ice Barrier absorbs damage and protects your casts,
Ice Block saves you as a last resort,
Cold Snap brings back your frost abilities, and
Frost Armor slows enemies attacking you.
Utility Spells
Counterspell interrupts a cast,
Polymorph takes an enemy out of the fight,
Remove Lesser Curse removes curses,
Blink breaks distance, and
Evocation restores mana.
Talents Overview
The Frost tree is the only mage tree that does not fit within the budget in full: the complete set costs 53 points out of 51 available. Two points have to be given up, and the easiest place to pull them from is
Frost Warding, because it affects neither damage nor control.
This is not a finished leveling build. It is only an example distribution of abilities for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
A frost mage's weapon is a bundle of stats. A staff or a pairing of a one-handed weapon with an off-hand is chosen for spell power, intellect and crit.
Crit gives more here than usual:
Ice Shards increases the critical damage multiplier itself,
Shatter raises crit chance against a frozen target, and
Winter's Chill does so for your main attacks. So an item with crit boosts not only your average but also your peak windows.
Intellect and economy matter because of long fights:
Frost Channeling makes the frost school cheaper and lowers threat, which together with
Ice Barrier lets you keep the pace without pauses.
Hit is provided by the tree itself through
Elemental Precision, so you can tune your gear a bit more freely toward spell power and crit. If you play a hybrid setup and pick up extra fire damage,
Elemental Precision covers both schools at once.
