WoW Forever Holy Paladin — Specialization Changes
Specialization Overview
A healer with Holy-magic damage. Holy in Forever gained faster follow-up heals, a shorter cooldown on
Holy Shock, and targeted group healing. In exchange,
Illumination returns less mana than in classic, while Reverence adds Spirit-based regeneration even while you are casting.
The tree is still about efficient single-target healing, but the rhythm feels livelier: a critical strike now affects your next spell rather than only refunding mana.
Class Changes
Crits Empower Your Next Spell
Classic Holy leaned on
Flash of Light: you picked the rank of that spell and of
Holy Light based on incoming damage and remaining mana. Surge of Light ties them together: a critical
Holy Shock or
Flash of Light shortens the cast time of your next
Holy Light. At two points that is a full second off.
The effect lasts 15 seconds, so you can hold it for incoming damage rather than dumping it immediately into an almost-full health bar. It is important to understand the boundary: Surge of Light speeds up the cast but does not make the spell itself cheaper.
Holy Shock Has Become a Working Button
Holy Shock has a 10-second cooldown. That gives you a regular instant heal on the move. In classic the ability was an inefficient emergency button saved for the last resort; now it is built into your normal healing rhythm.
Illumination Returns Less
Classic
Illumination could refund the full base cost of a critical heal. In Forever the talent returns half of the base cost, including qualifying heals from Light's Vigil. A critical strike still helps your mana, but it no longer pays for the spell in full.
The compensation comes from another direction: Reverence at three points lets 30% of your Spirit-based mana regeneration continue while you cast. In classic Holy had nothing similar, and Spirit barely mattered in long fights.
Divine Intellect still increases your overall mana pool as well.
Light's Vigil — Pre-Set Group Healing
Light's Vigil is placed on an ally and lasts 30 seconds, so you can set it up ahead of time, before a damage spike. You then trigger it with
Holy Shock: that
Holy Shock does not go on cooldown, and the target heals its group.
The hostile version refunds 75% of the mana cost; the friendly group version does not. Only one Light's Vigil can be active on the paladin and on the group at a time. In a dungeon that group is the whole team; in a raid it is only the subgroup of the marked ally, so your target choice decides who receives the healing.
Holy Magic and PvP
Consecration has become a baseline ability rather than a talent eleven points into the Holy tree — every specialization has access to it with no investment. Hallowed Ground increases the damage of your Holy spells against the first four enemies to enter
Consecration.
Healing gear additionally grants bonus damage equal to a third of your healing bonus. That means a healing upgrade from a dungeon also helps in solo play.
Voice of Truth grants six seconds of immunity to silence and interrupts. In PvP this is a way to push a heal through an opponent's interrupt window, but it does not save you from stuns and will not keep the target within range.
Core Ability Overview
Holy Light and Flash of Light
Holy Light is a large, expensive heal;
Flash of Light is fast and cheap.
Healing Light at three points raises the healing of both by 12%, and Surge of Light links them: a critical
Flash of Light speeds up your next
Holy Light.
Holy Shock
Holy Shock heals an ally or strikes an enemy, is applied instantly, and has a 10-second cooldown. It is a heal on the move, a trigger for Light's Vigil, and a source of damage for a combat build.
Light's Vigil
Light's Vigil is a mark on an ally for 30 seconds. The next
Holy Shock on that target does not go on cooldown and heals its group. One mark per paladin and per group, so in a raid your target choice decides whose subgroup gets the healing.
Consecration and Holy Damage
Consecration is now a baseline skill. Hallowed Ground boosts the damage of your Holy magic against the first four enemies in the circle, while
Exorcism and
Holy Wrath remain focused sources of damage against undead and demons.
Divine Favor
Divine Favor gives your next
Flash of Light,
Holy Light or
Holy Shock a 100% critical effect. Given that a crit now triggers Surge of Light, this is not only a burst of healing but also a way to guarantee a faster next big heal.
Defensive and Support Abilities
Divine Shield,
Divine Protection and
Lay on Hands remain your main emergency buttons;
Blessing of Protection removes physical damage from an ally,
Blessing of Freedom removes slows, and
Blessing of Sacrifice transfers part of the damage to you.
Cleanse is still one of the reasons to bring a paladin to the group.
Blessings and Auras
Blessing of Might,
Blessing of Wisdom and
Blessing of Kings are handed out by role, while the auras
Devotion Aura,
Retribution Aura and
Concentration Aura are chosen to fit the task. For a healer,
Concentration Aura is especially useful: it reduces the chance your spells are interrupted.
Talent Overview
The Holy tree fits 48 points into a budget of 51, so it is taken in full, and the three spare points go into
Benediction from the Retribution tree — a 6% reduction to the cost of all instant spells and abilities.
This is not a finished leveling build. It is only an example distribution of abilities for reference.
Talents
Weapon Choice
Holy is the only paladin tree where a weapon is not judged by its damage. What matters is Intellect, Spirit and healing bonus:
Divine Intellect turns Intellect into your mana pool, and Reverence makes Spirit a working stat even during continuous healing.
A one-handed weapon and shield remains the standard: the shield provides armor and stats without giving up a slot. A two-handed weapon with a large healing bonus is also acceptable, but then you lose the stats from the shield, and the trade-off has to be calculated separately.
It is also worth remembering the conversion: healing gear grants bonus damage equal to a third of its healing bonus. For solo play and a combat build, this means healing items are not useless for damage.
Critical strike chance is more valuable in Forever than in classic: it both triggers Surge of Light and enables
Illumination. At the same time
Illumination returns only half of the base cost, so you can no longer build your entire mana economy on crits.
