Overview

Reins of the Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher

Game iconReins of the Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher is a flying mount in the form of an icy frost wyrm, added in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. The mount is a reward for the meta-achievement Glory of the Icecrown Raider (25 player), which requires completing 17 separate achievements in the Icecrown Citadel raid. According to the in-game description, frostbrood vanquishers are considered the most ferocious and relentless of all frost wyrms.

The Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher is the mount version for the 25-player raid format. The equivalent reward for the 10-player format is the Game iconReins of the Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher, which has a darker, reddish coloration.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Iconic model — the frost wyrm from Icecrown Citadel remains one of the most recognizable mounts in the game. The massive dragon skeleton, wreathed in frost and a cold glow, draws attention anywhere in the world.
  • A mark of mastery — the mount confirms that you have completed every challenge of a legendary raid, including the special conditions on each boss. It is a sign of an experienced player.
  • Availability — unlike many rare mounts, the Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher does not depend on a random drop. The outcome is entirely in your hands: complete all the achievements and the mount is guaranteed.
  • Solo content — Icecrown Citadel is easily soloed at the current level 80 cap in The War Within expansion. Most of the achievements can be completed without a group.
  • Collection — the mount counts toward your overall mount tally and brings you closer to the achievements for the number of mounts collected.

Requirements and How to Get There

Requirements

  • Character level: any (the mount is available from level 10 once learned)
  • Riding skill: Apprentice Riding (ground), Expert Riding (flight)
  • Required achievement: Glory of the Icecrown Raider (25 player)
  • Raid: Icecrown Citadel (25 player, Normal and Heroic difficulty)
  • Minimum level to enter the raid: 30

How to Reach Icecrown Citadel

The raid is located in the Icecrown zone on the Northrend continent. The entrance is at coordinates 53.8, 87.1 — at the foot of an enormous tower on the southern side of the zone.

From Dalaran (Northrend):

  1. Head west out of the city on a flying mount
  2. The Citadel is visible from afar — it is a giant dark tower
  3. The entrance is at ground level, up a long staircase on the northern side

From the capitals:

  • Use the portal to Dalaran (Northrend) from Stormwind or Orgrimmar
  • Then fly west to the Citadel

Difficulty Setup

Before entering the raid, right-click your portrait and select:

  • Raid size: 25 player
  • Difficulty: depends on the achievement (Normal or Heroic)

You can switch between Normal and Heroic difficulty right inside the raid as long as you are not locked to a specific boss.

Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining It

To get the mount, you must complete all 17 achievements of the meta-achievement. The achievements fall into two groups: 4 Heroic wing clears and 13 special boss challenges.

Heroic Wings (4 achievements)

These achievements require killing all bosses of the corresponding wing on Heroic difficulty in the 25-player mode. At max level, bosses die in a single hit.

Special Challenges (13 achievements)

These achievements can be done on Normal difficulty, which makes the task significantly easier.

Lower Spire

Boned (25 player)Lord Marrowgar Do not let any player remain impaled on a Bone Spike for longer than 8 seconds. When soloing at max level, the boss dies before he can use this ability.

Full House (25 player)Lady Deathwhisper Kill the boss while five different cultist types are still alive. On Normal difficulty, the adds stop spawning once the boss's shield is destroyed. Drop the shield, wait for the five add types, and only then kill the boss.

I'm on a Boat (25 player) — Gunship Battle Each player may board the enemy ship no more than once. Soloing counts automatically — you jump onto the enemy ship once and win.

I've Gone and Made a Mess (25 player)Deathbringer Saurfang Kill the boss before the fifth application of Mark of the Fallen Champion. At max level the boss dies instantly, so the achievement is earned automatically.

The Plagueworks

Dances with Oozes (25 player)Rotface Kill the boss without the Big Ooze using Unstable Ooze Explosion. At max level the boss dies before the dangerous oozes appear.

Flu Shot Shortage (25 player)Festergut Kill the boss so that no one has 3 stacks of the Inoculated effect. Solo, this happens automatically — the boss dies too quickly.

Nausea, Heartburn, Indigestion... (25 player)Professor Putricide Kill the boss without using the Mutated Abomination's Regurgitated Ooze ability. At max level, simply kill the boss before you need to control the Mutated Abomination.

The Crimson Hall

The Orb Whisperer (25 player) — Blood Prince Council Kill the Council so that no player takes more than 25,000 spell damage from a single hit. At max level you kill the Council instantly.

Once Bitten, Twice Shy (25 player)Blood-Queen Lana'thel Kill the boss twice: once while a vampire, and once without turning into a vampire. This achievement requires two separate visits in different weeks. On the first visit, let the boss bite you (wait a few seconds before attacking), then kill her. On the second, kill the boss instantly without letting her bite you. Achievement progress is tracked account-wide.

The Frostwing Halls

Portal Jockey (25 player)Valithria Dreamwalker Enter every portal that Valithria creates before healing her fully. For healing classes: enter each portal as it appears and heal Valithria between portals. For non-healing classes: use a Game iconWildercloth Bandage from the auction house. Do this on Normal difficulty — on Heroic, Valithria takes periodic damage that makes bandage healing impossible.

All You Can Eat (25 player)Sindragosa Kill the boss so that no one accumulates more than 5 stacks of Mystic Buffet. At max level the boss dies instantly.

The Frozen Throne

Been Waiting a Long Time for This (25 player)The Lich King Let the Necrotic Plague stack to 30 charges before defeating the boss. This is the hardest solo achievement in the raid. Do not kill the boss right away: let him apply Necrotic Plague to you, then let the plague jump to the spawning adds, gradually building stacks. When the plague reaches 30 stacks, finish the fight.

Neck-Deep in Vile (25 player)The Lich King Kill all Vile Spirits before they explode, then defeat the Lich King. The Vile Spirits spawn in the final phase of the fight. At max level, use area-of-effect attacks to destroy the spirits quickly, then finish off the boss.

Farming Optimization

Recommended Classes

  • Paladin (best choice) — can heal Valithria Dreamwalker on its own, has strong area attacks and defensive abilities
  • Priest — can likewise heal Valithria, convenient for the "Portal Jockey" achievement
  • Druid — has healing in the Restoration specialization, good mobility
  • Shaman — Restoration lets you heal Valithria, though slower than a Paladin

Non-healing classes (Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Warlock, Hunter, Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Evoker) can use bandages to heal Valithria on Normal difficulty.

Optimal Route

Week 1:

  1. Set the difficulty to 25 Heroic
  2. Clear the entire raid on Heroic difficulty, completing all achievements along the way
  3. On Blood-Queen Lana'thel — let yourself be bitten, then kill her (first part of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy")
  4. On Valithria — switch to Normal difficulty, enter every portal, heal the boss
  5. On the Lich King — switch to Normal difficulty, complete "Been Waiting a Long Time for This" (30 plague stacks)

Week 2:

  1. Set the difficulty to 25 Heroic
  2. Reach Blood-Queen Lana'thel and kill her instantly (second part of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy")
  3. If you did not complete "Neck-Deep in Vile" — reach the Lich King and finish it

Time to Complete

  • Full raid clear: 15–25 minutes
  • Minimum number of weeks: 2 (because of "Once Bitten, Twice Shy")
  • Total time to obtain the mount: 30–50 minutes over two weeks

Alternate Characters

Achievement progress is account-bound. You can complete different achievements on different characters. For example, heal Valithria on a Paladin, and do the Heroic fights on any class you find convenient.

Tips

1

Weekly reset — the raid resets every Wednesday (EU) or Tuesday (US). Plan two visits across two consecutive weeks.

2

Deadly Boss Mods addon — install DBM to track boss mechanics. Although most bosses die instantly at max level, the addon will help with the achievements on the Lich King.

3

Valithria and bandages — if you play a non-healing class, buy at least 40 bandages on the auction house in advance. On Normal difficulty Valithria takes no periodic damage, and bandages are enough to heal her.

4

The Lich King and the plague — for the "Been Waiting a Long Time for This" achievement, do not use area attacks in the first phase. Let the plague jump between adds naturally. Watch the stack counter through an addon.

5

Difficulty switching — you can change the mode between Normal and Heroic inside the raid. Use this to combine Heroic wings and Normal achievements in a single run.

6

Don't confuse the versions — for the Icebound Frostbrood Vanquisher you specifically need the 25-player format. Achievements from the 10-player format count toward a separate meta-achievement with a different mount.

7

Gunship Battle — when soloing, jump onto the enemy ship, kill the mage, and return. Do not jump again — otherwise the achievement will not count.
