Illidari-Bane Mageblade — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Illidari-Bane Mageblade is a one-handed dagger of rare quality, added to World of Warcraft with the The Burning Crusade expansion. It is the caster-weapon variant from a set of blades forged specifically to fight the demons of the Burning Legion: the item's stats include intellect and critical strike, along with an effect that boosts spell power against demons.
The dagger belongs to the weapon type used by spellcasting classes that wield daggers: mages, druids, priests, shamans, warlocks and evokers. This affiliation is exactly what matters for transmogrification — the blade's appearance becomes available to characters of these classes once the item enters your collection.
In itself the item is a low-item-level weapon (80), and in the modern game its combat stats are irrelevant. The blade's value to a collector lies elsewhere: it is part of a themed "Illidari-Bane" weapon set, tied together by lore and a shared quest line in Shadowmoon Valley. The dagger stands out with a stern, "functional" model free of ornate decoration — a restrained blade that fits practical looks.
Source
The Illidari-Bane Mageblade cannot be looted from a boss or bought from a vendor. It is a quest reward — the final step of a long chain of tasks in Shadowmoon Valley, completed to obtain a weapon with bonuses against demons.
The final quest. The dagger is granted by the quest Quenching the Blade. The task is to travel to the Scalding Pools at the foot of the Hand of Gul'dan and temper the forged blade in the lava lakes, then return to the smith David Wayne at Wildhammer Stronghold. On completing the quest the player chooses one reward out of four weapon options — the caster dagger is among them.
The start of the chain. The line begins with the quest item Illidari-Bane Shard. The shard drops from the mo'arg Overseer Ripsaw in Legion Hold — a demon camp in Shadowmoon Valley. After turning in the shard the player works through a series of tasks: the weapon forging goes through the smith David Wayne, requiring ingots and rare reagents, and some steps lead into the dungeons of that era. The chain ends with the quest Quenching the Blade and the choice of a final blade.
Group or solo. Today the whole chain is done solo: the tasks are scaled for The Burning Crusade era and pose no difficulty for a modern max-level character. Individual steps lead into the dungeons of Outland, which are also cleared solo.
Binding and limit. The finished dagger binds when picked up, so it cannot be passed to another character — the appearance unlocks on the character who completed the quest. The reward is granted once: when turning in the quest you choose only one of the four blades, and the rest remain unavailable on that character. To collect the appearances of every variant, you will have to run the chain on different characters.
Alternatives
The Illidari-Bane Mageblade has no color variations — it is a separate model with no recolored versions. It does, however, have "relatives": the quest Quenching the Blade offers a choice of four weapons from the same line. Each is a separate appearance, and only one of them is available per run of the chain.
| Item | Type | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One-handed caster dagger | Quenching the Blade quest reward | |
| One-handed dagger | Quenching the Blade quest reward | |
| One-handed sword | Quenching the Blade quest reward | |
| Two-handed sword | Quenching the Blade quest reward |
If you specifically want a caster dagger, the direct alternative is the plain Illidari-Bane Dagger from the same line — a separate dagger model from the set. The two swords suit those collecting melee weapons in the same theme. Since all four items belong to one chain and one story, they look great as a unified "Illidari-Bane set" across different characters on your account.
Who It Suits Visually
- Suited to stern, "working" caster looks: the restrained model without bright glow does not draw attention and works as a neutral addition to an outfit.
- Harmonizes with dark cloth and leather sets of The Burning Crusade era — the dagger is forged in the same style as the gear of that period.
- Fitting for sets with an Outland, demon and Burning Legion theme: by its lore this weapon was created precisely to fight demons.
- A logical choice for a warlock or priest with an "anti-demon" concept — the blade's name and origin point directly to that theme.
- Contrasts with richly decorated ceremonial sets: against them the blade's simple silhouette can get lost, so it is best not to pair it with flashy sets.
Tips
The appearance unlocks on the character who completed the quest chain — the dagger binds when picked up and cannot be passed along.
Per single run of Quenching the Blade you choose only one reward out of four: decide in advance whether you want the caster dagger or another blade from the set.
To collect the appearances of all four Illidari-Bane variants, run the chain again on different characters — each one earns the right to a single choice.
The chain is long and includes forging with the smith David Wayne, gathering ingots and reagents, plus steps into Outland dungeons — set aside time for a full run.
It is worth starting by farming the Illidari-Bane Shard: the item drops from Overseer Ripsaw in Legion Hold in Shadowmoon Valley.
The whole line is done solo — for a modern max-level character the bosses and Outland dungeons pose no difficulty.
The dagger's combat stats and item level are irrelevant for transmogrification: all that matters is obtaining the item once so the appearance enters your appearance collection.
