Violet Spellwing

The Kirin Tor Summoning Crystal is a carrier item that teaches your character the flying mount Violet Spellwing. The mount was added in the Legion expansion alongside patch 7.3 "Shadows of Argus" and was originally awarded as the Ahead of the Curve: Argus the Unmaker reward for killing the final boss of the Antorus, the Burning Throne raid on Heroic or Mythic difficulty before the release of Battle for Azeroth.

Visually it is a large violet phantasm bird in the Dalaran style: feathers with an arcane glow, glowing lilac eyes and a long tail. The mount is a flyer, with an arcane magic overlay effect when summoned.

The mount falls into the seasonally unavailable category. The timeline is as follows:

• Patch 7.3 (August 29, 2017): added to the game.
• Patch 8.0.1 (July 17, 2018): removed with the start of Battle for Azeroth.
• Patch 11.2.5 (October 7, 2025): returned as part of the WoW Remix: Legion event.
• January 19, 2026: the Legion Remix event ended, and the mount was once again removed from the regular game.

At the moment, in current retail World of Warcraft (The War Within, patch 11.1, Season 2), the Kirin Tor Summoning Crystal cannot be obtained. The mount remains in the collection of those players who managed to complete the required steps during one of the two availability windows. If a future Remix iteration or a similar event opens the mount again, we will update this guide.

Below is the full path to obtaining the mount — it will be useful both as a historical reference and as a guide in case the event returns.

• Unique bird model. The Violet Spellwing is one of the few "phoenix" mounts of the arcane school. In model it is close to the Ashes of Al'ar from The Eye and the Silver Covenant Hippogryph, but with the signature Dalaran styling of the Kirin Tor.
• Prestigious AOTC status. In the original version the mount marked a player as someone who cleared the raid's Heroic difficulty before the next expansion — such mounts are valued by collectors.
• Flies at maximum speed. Flight speed depends on your riding skill and scales up to current — 310% if your character has learned the appropriate ability.
• Account-wide. Once obtained, it is bound to the shared collection and works on characters of both factions and any class.
• Rare in flight. Most players missed both windows, so the mount is rarely seen in central hubs — you will stand out in the crowd.

In the original implementation the mount was tied to the quest chain around the final boss of the Antorus, the Burning Throne raid.

1. Progress through the standard Legion storyline up to the opening of the portal to the planet Argus and the "Shadows of Argus" campaign.
2. Gain access to the Antorus, the Burning Throne raid in the Antoran Crowned Peaks on Argus.
3. Assemble a group and reach the final boss — Argus the Unmaker.
4. Kill the boss on Heroic or Mythic difficulty — only these modes give the key item.
5. From the boss's inventory take the Blood of the Unmaker — the item that starts the quest Blood of a Titan.
6. Bring the item to Archmage Khadgar in Dalaran over the Broken Isles.
7. Turn in the quest and receive the Kirin Tor Summoning Crystal as a reward.
8. Use the crystal to add the Violet Spellwing to your mount collection.

Key detail: the Blood of the Unmaker item did not drop with a random chance, but guaranteed from the first kill of Argus the Unmaker per week on the required difficulty. In other words, a single proper AOTC run essentially guaranteed the mount.

During the WoW Remix: Legion event the mount was brought back as part of the "Eternus, Argus" phase, which launched on November 18, 2025. The path was almost identical to the original, but with two important caveats.

1. Create a timerunner character on the hero-selection screen and choose a faction and class.
2. Run through the accelerated Legion story via the infinite remix system (a bronze artifact instead of the traditional story chains).
3. Level up your power tempo and gain access to the current event phase — at the final stage the phase with the Antorus, the Burning Throne raid opened.
4. Enter the raid and reach Argus the Unmaker on Heroic or Mythic difficulty.
5. After the kill take the Blood of the Unmaker and turn in the quest Blood of a Titan to the keeper mage in the event's central city.
6. Receive the Kirin Tor Summoning Crystal — the mount was automatically transferred to the collection of your main retail character after the event ended.

The main difference with Remix: the raid was cleared in "power creep" mode — characters with a leveled-up power tempo literally tore Antorus apart solo or in small groups, so assembling a Heroic AOTC was possible within a few weeks of play even for a newcomer. Buying the crystal for bronze from a key vendor in the Infinite Bazaar was not an option — the mount could only be obtained by killing the boss.

In the current expansion there are no direct paths to obtaining the mount. Here is what you should understand:

• Killing Argus the Unmaker in a solo run of Antorus on Normal/Heroic difficulty does not currently give [Blood of the Unmaker].(https://www.wowhead.com/item=152900). The item was removed from the loot table as of patch 8.0.1 and was only restored for the duration of Legion Remix.
• You cannot buy the Kirin Tor Summoning Crystal at the auction house or from other players — the item is bound on pickup and cannot be traded.
• Paid boost and carry services on third-party sites offering the mount now either rely on other players' accounts (which leads to a ban under Blizzard's rules) or sell outdated information.
• Keep an eye on Blizzard announcements: if future patches launch a second wave of Remix or a similar retro event, the mount may return again.

In practice, a solo run of Antorus in 2026 remains useful for other mounts and transmogs from the raid — especially the Shackled Ur'zul from Mythic Argus, the Antoran Gloomhound for the Glory of the Argus Raider achievement and the T21 transmog sets. But these runs have nothing to do with the Violet Spellwing.

• Show the mount off in public. If you managed to obtain the Violet Spellwing during Legion or Remix — use it in Dalaran, Stormwind or Orgrimmar. Such mounts are rarely seen in the game.
• Check your summary collection. Through the mount window (Shift+P by default) the mount appears in the "Flying" section with the source filter set to "Quest".
• Save screenshots of obtaining it. Many collectors keep track of seasonal/unavailable mounts — your screenshot may be useful to the community in the future.
• Don't rush to sell your account — seasonally locked mounts significantly increase a character's value for collectors.

• Monitor Remix event announcements. Blizzard confirmed the "remix" format of old expansions as a regular feature — after Legion Remix a Mists of Pandaria Remix and other iterations are expected.
• Level up access to the Antorus raid in advance. Completing the Legion campaign at max level is quick now — a few hours on a single story up to the opening of Argus is enough.
• Don't skip the raid clear on the next return. The first kill of Argus the Unmaker on Heroic gives the item guaranteed.
• Watch the 11.x patches on the PTR. Patch notes for new patches sometimes announce the return of seasonal mounts ahead of time — this gives a planning window of several weeks.

The Kirin Tor Summoning Crystal is not an ordinary farm mount but a historical relic, twice opened and twice closed. If you don't have it, the only sensible plan is to wait for the next return window. If you do, keep in mind that it is one of the rarest collectible items among the flying mounts of the current era.
