Kobold Mining Shovel — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

The
Kobold Mining Shovel is a low-level two-handed mace whose model is nothing more than an ordinary digging shovel with a wooden handle and a wide steel blade. It is one of the vanilla World of Warcraft items with a fun, "everyday" look that collectors of unusual transmogs appreciate.
No glow, no spikes, no runes — just a simple working shovel. That is exactly its charm: the appearance is perfect for comedic, peasant, and "labor" looks where a fearsome weapon would feel out of place. The item is of common (white) quality and binds to the character on equip, so you can add it to your collection right after obtaining it.
As a two-handed mace, the shovel is available for transmog to classes that wield two-handed maces: the Warrior, Paladin, Death Knight, Shaman, and Druid.
Source
The shovel drops from kobold mobs in Elwynn Forest, the human starting zone. The main source is the Kobold Tunneler, a weak humanoid that gathers in large groups in the southern part of the forest, near the mines and pits.
- The drop chance is low — around 0.13%, so be prepared to kill a lot of kobolds.
- Kobold Tunnelers cluster at the mine entrances in the southern part of Elwynn Forest; a good landmark is the area around
/way 38 82. - Kobolds respawn constantly and stand in dense groups, so farming goes quickly despite the low chance.
This is a starting-zone world drop, so no prerequisites, reputation, or dungeon access are required — just fly to Elwynn Forest and clear the mines.
Alternatives
There are several items in the game with the same or a similar shovel model — if farming kobolds is rough, it is easier to put the look together through one of these alternatives.
| Appearance | Quality | Wowhead |
|---|---|---|
| Farmer's Shovel | Common | |
| Burrowing Shovel | Uncommon | |
| The Shoveler | Rare |
The Farmer's Shovel uses the exact same model as the Kobold Mining Shovel, so the two are fully interchangeable for transmog. The Burrowing Shovel shares the same silhouette, while The Shoveler is a shovel variant of a different shape if you want a slightly different blade look.
Who It Suits Visually
- Perfect for peasant and laborer looks — a set of simple cloth or leather plus the shovel gives a complete rural-worker appearance.
- Suits comedic and roleplay builds where a regular weapon would clash with the "common villager" concept.
- Harmonizes with earthy, brown, and gray armor sets thanks to the natural wood-and-steel palette of the handle and blade.
- Works well with mining and treasure-digging themes — especially paired with miner and prospector style appearances.
Tips
Farm Kobold Tunnelers in tight pulls: they stand in groups near the mines and respawn quickly, which makes up for the low drop chance.
If saving time matters, assemble the look through the Farmer's Shovel — it has the same model and is often easier to find on the auction house.
Bring a character that destroys weak mobs quickly for farming — kobolds die in a couple of hits, and clear speed matters more than a pinpoint chance.
Check the auction house before farming: vanilla white items like this shovel are sometimes listed cheaply, and buying one can save you hours.
The appearance is account-bound, so once you get the shovel you unlock it for all of your characters that use two-handed maces.
The shovel works great as a "secondary" comedic kit for screenshots and roleplay scenes — keep a transmog set ready in your wardrobe.
