Overview

Lapidarius Gemcutter

Game iconLapidarius Gemcutter is an uncommon one-hand dagger added to World of Warcraft in the The War Within expansion. It is a green item-level 80 weapon with Intellect and Versatility: statistically it is geared toward magic-damage classes, but it earns its place in transmog collections thanks to its model.

The dagger's silhouette is calm and craftsmanlike: a short straight blade, a faceted guard, and a hilt with a dark wrap. The name refers to the Latin "lapidarius" — a master who works stone and precious gems — and the appearance backs that up: the weapon looks less like a combat blade and more like a gemcutter's precision tool. This styling fits beautifully with looks tied to the underground workshops of Khaz Algar.

The model's main appeal is how easy it is to obtain. The dagger requires neither raids nor a rare drop: the appearance unlocks through seasonal Delver's Journey progress, and the item itself can be bought from a city vendor. That makes the Lapidarius Gemcutter a convenient "starter" dagger model for anyone just beginning to build a wardrobe in Midnight.

Source

The Lapidarius Gemcutter is tied to The War Within delve system in two ways at once: the dagger's appearance unlocks through Delver's Journey progress, and the item itself is sold by a delve treasures vendor.

Delver's Journey

The item description states it outright: the appearance unlocks as you advance the Delver's Journey of Seasons 1, 2, and 3. The Delver's Journey is a seasonal reward track for delves that arrived in patch 11.0.2. Progress on it is earned by completing Bountiful Delves and weekly quests, and every few thousand points unlocks a new reward. The Lapidarius Gemcutter appearance is one such reward: earn it in any of the three seasons and you add the model to your wardrobe permanently.

Buying from the vendor

The item itself is sold by Sir Finley Mrrgglton, a vendor stocking "Delver's Treasures." He stands in Dornogal, the capital of the earthen and the main city of The War Within, in the delvers' headquarters district.

You pay for the dagger with Resonance Crystals — the common currency of Khaz Algar that accumulates from delves and other zone activities. There is no reputation or profession requirement to buy it; level 70 and access to Dornogal are enough. The easiest way to unlock the city is to start The War Within intro campaign on any character level 70 or higher.

Alternatives

The Lapidarius Gemcutter has no color variations of its own, but the delve dagger lineup includes a sibling model from the same set:

Game iconUmbral Artist's Chisel is the paired dagger from the same delve craftsman series: a close silhouette, but a darker blade and slightly different hilt proportions. Its appearance also unlocks through Delver's Journey progress, and the Agility-stat version additionally drops occasionally from delve bosses. If you are collecting the full set of delve blades, it makes sense to grab both models in a single visit to Sir Finley Mrrgglton.

Who It Suits Visually

The Lapidarius Gemcutter is a restrained model with no glowing effects, so it looks best in calm, "working" outfits:

  • Pairs well with cloth and leather sets in earthy, bronze, and ochre tones, where the dagger reads as part of a craftsman's gear rather than a ceremonial weapon.
  • Harmonizes with armor sets from the dungeons and delves of Khaz Algar — weapon and armor then build around the shared mineral theme of The War Within.
  • Goes well with modest starter robes and mantles in muted gray-brown shades, so it suits a priest or mage look without flashy details.
  • Logically completes the "in-character" look of a collector: a gemcutter's dagger paired with work clothes makes a readable stonemason ensemble.
  • Contrasts with heavy decorative tier sets — against large plate elements the dagger's restrained silhouette gets lost, so for ceremonial looks it is better to pick a flashier weapon.

Tips

1

The appearance can be earned in any of the first three The War Within seasons — the Delver's Journey of Seasons 1, 2, and 3 unlocks the same model, so it is hard to miss.

2

Delver's Journey progress builds fastest through Bountiful Delves and the weekly quest — run them every week and the required rank will come together in a few play sessions.

3

Resonance Crystals accumulate from almost any Khaz Algar activity; you do not need to farm them specifically for this dagger — by the time you buy it you usually already have the currency.

4

Before visiting the vendor, make sure your character has reached level 70 and unlocked Dornogal through The War Within campaign — without that, Sir Finley Mrrgglton will be unavailable.

5

After buying, equip the dagger for a second in the character window: the appearance lands in your wardrobe immediately and becomes available to every character on the account whose class can use daggers.

6

On a single trip to Sir Finley Mrrgglton it is worth eyeing the paired inv_knife_1h_undergroundquest_b_01Umbral Artist's Chisel too — both models complete the full set of delve blades.

7

For raids and high keys the dagger is unsuitable: item level 80 is far from current loot, and the Lapidarius Gemcutter's value lies in the appearance alone.
