Overview

Mage-Bound Spelltome

Game iconMage-Bound Spelltome is an epic flying and ground mount added in patch 9.1.5 of the Shadowlands expansion. It is a massive magical tome saturated with pure magic. Your character hovers above the open pages of the book in a meditative pose, while arcane runes and glowing symbols swirl around them. The mount is awarded for the A Tour of Towers achievement, which requires you to complete all seven unique Mage Tower challenges.

The official item description reads: "This enormous tome was found in the abandoned depths of Dalaran's library, where it spun around the room, flapping its pages wildly. Open the magic-filled pages and fly off toward magical adventures."

Why you want this mount

  • Unique model — this is one of the few mounts shaped like a flying book. Your character sits in the air above an open tome, creating a striking magical image.
  • A mark of mastery — obtaining the mount requires completing all seven Mage Tower challenges, which is a serious accomplishment. This mount proves your command of several classes and specializations.
  • Flying mount — the spelltome works both on the ground and in the air, providing up to +310% speed in flight if you have the appropriate riding skill.
  • Available to all characters — once obtained, the mount becomes available on every character on your account.
  • Visual effects — the mount features unique summon, flight and /mountspecial animations, and it also triggers the visual effects of certain transmogrification sets.
  • Only 4% of players have this achievement, which makes the mount truly rare.

How to obtain

To obtain the mount you need to complete the A Tour of Towers achievement — clear all seven unique Mage Tower challenges. The Mage Tower is available year-round and is not tied to the Timewalking: Legion event.

  1. Travel to the Broken Shore (Broken Isles, Legion expansion content).
  2. Find War Councilor Victoria at the Mage Tower on the Hold of Deliverance.
  3. Choose the challenge available for your current specialization.
  4. Complete the challenge and repeat the process for all seven challenge types, using characters with suitable specializations.
  5. After completing the final challenge you will receive the achievement and the Game iconMage-Bound Spelltome item in the mail.

The Seven Mage Tower Challenges

Each challenge is available only to certain specializations. Below is a table of all seven challenges with their bosses and suitable classes.

1. The Highlord's Return

Boss: Archmage Xylem Specializations: Warrior (Arms), Death Knight (Frost), Demon Hunter (Havoc), Hunter (Survival), Rogue (Subtlety)

2. An Impossible Foe

Boss: Agatha Specializations: Death Knight (Unholy), Druid (Feral), Mage (Fire), Rogue (Outlaw), Shaman (Elemental), Warrior (Fury)

3. The God-Queen's Fury

Boss: Sigryn Specializations: Mage (Arcane), Paladin (Retribution), Rogue (Assassination), Shaman (Enhancement), Warlock (Demonology)

4. Feltotem's Fall

Boss: Tugar Bloodtotem Specializations: Hunter (Beast Mastery), Monk (Windwalker), Priest (Discipline), Warlock (Destruction)

5. Closing the Eye

Boss: Highlord Kruul Specializations: Death Knight (Blood), Demon Hunter (Vengeance), Druid (Guardian), Monk (Brewmaster), Paladin (Protection), Warrior (Protection)

6. Thwarting the Twins

Boss: The Sigryn Brothers (Raest) Specializations: Druid (Balance), Hunter (Marksmanship), Mage (Frost), Priest (Shadow), Warlock (Affliction)

7. End of the Risen Threat

Boss: Lord Erdris Thorn Specializations: Druid (Restoration), Paladin (Holy), Priest (Holy), Shaman (Restoration), Monk (Mistweaver)

Minimum number of characters

You do not have to create seven separate characters. Some classes have access to several challenges thanks to their different specializations. The optimal set of three characters:

Character Available challenges
Death Knight The Highlord's Return (Frost), An Impossible Foe (Unholy), Closing the Eye (Blood)
Paladin The God-Queen's Fury (Retribution), End of the Risen Threat (Holy)
Hunter Feltotem's Fall (Beast Mastery), Thwarting the Twins (Marksmanship)

This way, all seven challenges are covered by just three characters. The Druid is also an excellent choice, as it has access to as many as four challenges.

How to reach the Mage Tower

The Mage Tower is located on the Broken Shore — a Legion content zone on the Broken Isles.

Quick route

  1. Open the map and select Dalaran (Broken Isles) — use your hearthstone if it is set to that Dalaran, or a portal from your faction's capital.
  2. From Dalaran, fly to the Broken Shore (the southern part of the Broken Isles map).
  3. On the Broken Shore, find the Hold of Deliverance — War Councilor Victoria stands next to the Mage Tower.
  4. Speak with Victoria and choose an available challenge.

Coordinates

/way Broken Shore 44.7 63.3 War Councilor Victoria

Important

Unlike the original version, the Mage Tower does not need to be built — it is permanently available. A character of any level from 10 and up can take part in the challenges.

Gear scaling and preparation

Inside the challenges all gear is scaled down to item level 50. This means you cannot simply outgear the challenges with powerful equipment. However, there are optimization strategies.

Recommended gear

  • Gem sockets — items from old raids (for example, Siege of Orgrimmar) often have extra sockets that give an advantage under scaling.
  • Legacy gems — meta gems and regular gems from older expansions retain their effects and do not scale down.
  • Trinkets — trinkets from past expansions with useful effects (for example, the Game iconDragonspine Trophy) can be more effective than current ones.
  • Legion enchants — the Game iconEnchant Neck - Mark of the Hidden Satyr enchant is especially effective.

Consumables

  • Potions and flasks from the current expansion work normally
  • Combat potions provide a noticeable advantage
  • Food and augment runes also take effect
  • Drums of Fury replace the Bloodlust/Heroism effect

Addons

  • Deadly Boss Mods (DBM) — warnings about boss mechanics
  • Plater — tracking enemy health bars and casts
  • WeakAuras — custom indicators for tracking abilities and mechanics

Tips for completing the challenges

  • Start with the easy challenges — "An Impossible Foe" (Agatha) and "Thwarting the Twins" are considered the most accessible for most specializations. Save "Closing the Eye" (Kruul) and "End of the Risen Threat" (healing) for last.
  • Learn the mechanics — each challenge requires precise knowledge of its mechanics. Watch video guides for your specific specialization before your first attempts.
  • Create a separate talent set — tailor your specialization and talents specifically for the Mage Tower challenge. Standard dungeon and raid builds may not work.
  • Use characters with simple specializations — if you need to create a new character for a challenge, choose a class with the simplest mechanics for that challenge type.
  • Take your time — the Mage Tower is permanently available. If a challenge is giving you trouble, come back later with better preparation or after studying additional guides.
  • The Druid is a versatile choice — the druid has access to four of the seven challenges (Balance, Feral, Guardian, Restoration), which makes it the most efficient class for this achievement.
  • Keep an eye on balance changes — as new patches release, the difficulty of the challenges may shift due to changes in classes and scaling.
