Overview

Maw of the Damned

Game iconMaw of the Damned is a two-handed axe, the artifact weapon of the Blood specialization for Death Knights. It debuted in the Legion expansion as one of the class's three artifacts and remains one of the most recognizable silhouettes thanks to its massive curved blade shaped like a gaping maw, dripping with dark energy.

The model is rendered in a grim bone-and-purple palette with the greenish glow of Scourge runes. After Legion, artifacts stopped being active weapons, but all of their appearances moved into the transmogrification collection and can be unlocked by any Blood Death Knight. It is precisely for these appearances that players return to this artifact today.

Source

The base appearance is unlocked by completing the artifact's starter quest chain. The Blood Death Knight obtains the axe through the quest The Dead and the Damned, given by Highlord Darion Mograine in the class order hall.

  • Pick up the quest The Dead and the Damned and ride out from Dalaran on Zeomi to the Broken Shore.
  • Pass through the Legion portal, fight your way to Baron Strife, and claim the axe — the artifact is granted automatically upon completion.
  • The chain can be soloed in a few minutes even at current level; there are no reputation requirements or prior campaigns needed.
  • The base appearance unlocks immediately after you receive the artifact — this is a mandatory condition for unlocking all the other color variants.

Alternatives

The artifact has five appearance styles, each with four color variants. Below are the main ways to unlock them.

Appearance Source Wowhead
Base Artifact quest Game iconitem=128402
Hidden "Touch of the Undead" Game iconTwisting Anima of Souls from the Withered Army Training in Suramar Game iconitem=139546
Combat challenge Mage Tower — the quest The Highlord's Return quest=45416
  • The hidden appearance "Touch of the Undead" is unlocked by the item Game iconTwisting Anima of Souls, which drops from the chest at the end of the Withered Army Training scenario. Running the scenario requires having completed the Suramar storyline and a stock of Ancient Mana, and for a chance at the item you need a result of at least 200 points.
  • The Mage Tower appearance is awarded for defeating Highlord Kruul in the quest The Highlord's Return. This is the tank challenge from the Legion Timewalking set.
  • Additional colors 2, 3, and 4 of any style require color 1 of that style to already be unlocked, along with the base appearance.

Visual Fit

  • Ideal for Death Knight looks themed around the Scourge and the Ebon Blade — bone and runic textures echo the Legion tier sets.
  • The greenish rune glow harmonizes with sets in acid-green and necrotic palettes.
  • The hidden "Touch of the Undead" variant, with its saturated purple-and-black palette, suits Shadowlands- and anima-themed looks.
  • The massive blade silhouette contrasts with light cloth armor — a divisive but striking choice for a "magical" death warrior.

Tips

1

The artifact appearances are tied to the Blood specialization — only a Death Knight switched into that spec can wear them.

2

If you skipped the artifact in Legion, you can complete the chain retroactively: the quest is still available through the class order hall.

3

Before hunting the hidden appearance, stock up on Ancient Mana in advance — without 400 units, the Withered Army Training scenario will not start.

4

In the Withered Army Training, aim for the maximum score: the higher the result, the higher the drop chance of spell_misc_zandalari_council_soulswapTwisting Anima of Souls.

5

The Mage Tower with the quest The Highlord's Return is available during Legion Timewalking periods — keep an eye on the event schedule.

6

After unlocking the base appearance, don't forget to unlock the first color of each style: without it, the remaining three shades will stay locked.

7

One completed artifact quest is enough for your entire account within the Death Knight appearance collection.
