Midnight Black Reins of Dark Portent

Midnight Black Reins of Dark Portent is an epic flying mount added in Patch 7.2 of the Legion expansion. It summons a coal-black raven with purple eyes — one of the four tints of the Rogue class mount.

The mount is a specialized tint of the base class mount Shadowblade's Lethal Omen, tied to the Subtlety specialization. The coal-black coloring matches the Subtlety artifact weapon — the Fangs of the Devourer. The reins are purchased from Zan Shivsproket in Dalaran's Hall of Shadows for 1,000 Order Resources.

An important feature of all ravens in the Dark Portent line: they make no sound in flight. This is an ideal thematic choice for a Rogue — silent flight matches the very essence of the class. Originally this tint was available only to Subtlety Rogues, but as of Patch 8.0.1 Battle for Azeroth the specialization requirement for purchase was removed.

To purchase the Midnight Black Reins of Dark Portent you must complete a chain of conditions. The mount is sold for 1,000 Order Resources, but before that you must obtain the base class mount and unlock access to the tint by leveling the Subtlety artifact weapon.

1. Earn the achievement Breaching the Tomb by completing the Armies of Legionfall campaign on the Broken Shore
2. Unlock flying on the Broken Isles
3. Complete the Rogue class mount quest chain: starting with the quest Spies of the Dreadlords and ending with the final quest Hiding in Plain Sight
4. Obtain the base mount — Bladed Reins of Dark Portent as the reward for the final quest
5. Switch to the Subtlety specialization and take the artifact weapon Fangs of the Devourer
6. Level the artifact until you earn the achievement (unlock 52 or more artifact traits)
7. Save up 1,000 Rogue Order Resources
8. Head to the Hall of Shadows in Dalaran and purchase the Midnight Black Reins of Dark Portent from Zan Shivsproket

Note: as of Patch 8.0.1 Battle for Azeroth, the active-specialization restriction at purchase was removed. It is enough that the Subtlety artifact has the Power Ascended status — you can purchase the mount while in any specialization. On current patches, artifact traits are also preserved and do not reset.

Obtaining the base class mount begins on the Broken Shore and runs through a series of infiltration quests in the opposing faction's capitals. The chain is identical in structure for Alliance and Horde, but the targets and locations differ.

Prerequisites

• Character level at least 45 (Chromie Time scaling system for Legion)
• Completed the Hall of Shadows campaign and unlocked Legionfall
• Earned the achievement Breaching the Tomb (Armies of Legionfall campaign on the Broken Shore)
• Unlocked flying on the Broken Isles

Quest "Spies of the Dreadlords"

The chain begins with the apothecary Chann at Deliverance Point on the Broken Shore. She sends you to Lilian Voss in Dalaran's Hall of Shadows. Lilian reveals that the Legion's nathrezim have created homunculi — counterfeit beings outwardly indistinguishable from the living — and planted them in the city capitals. Your task is to eliminate the spies before they strike from within.

Quest "Hiding in Plain Sight"

The final quest of the chain. You must infiltrate four of the opposing faction's capitals unnoticed and eliminate disguised Legion agents. Each target is surrounded by max-level NPC guards, so direct combat is out of the question — use Stealth, Distract, and Vanish to slip past the guards.

The targets for the Alliance are located in Orgrimmar, Undercity, Thunder Bluff, and Sen'jin. The targets for the Horde are in Stormwind, the Exodar, Darnassus, and Ironforge. While completing the quest you automatically become flagged for PvP — other players of the opposing faction can attack you. There is no way to avoid this.

The reward for the final quest is the Bladed Reins of Dark Portent — the base class mount. Once you obtain it, access opens up to purchasing tints from Zan Shivsproket.

To purchase the coal-black tint you must earn the Power Ascended achievement on the Subtlety artifact weapon — the Fangs of the Devourer. This achievement requires unlocking 52 or more artifact traits.

How to Obtain the Artifact

The Fangs of the Devourer consist of two daggers — Gutripper and Akaari's Will. The artifact is granted automatically the first time you switch to the Subtlety specialization after starting the Hall of Shadows campaign in Legion. If you have already completed Legion on another spec, head to the Hall of Shadows and speak with Fal Amos to unlock secondary artifacts.

• Hall of Shadows quests — the main story line gives large injections of artifact power
• World quests — on current patches Legion world quests still reward relics and artifact power
• Legion dungeons and raids — mini-bosses and final bosses drop artifact power items
• Items from Hall of Shadows campaigns — Marks of the Oath and other campaign rewards contain artifact power
• Exploring the Broken Shore and Argus — containers, events, and rare enemies

Tips for Fast Leveling

At the Midnight max level, all sources of artifact power work much faster thanks to your overlevel. The optimal plan is to complete the Legion campaigns sequentially, collecting all relics and rewards. Thanks to the removal of the specialization restriction in Patch 8.0.1, you can level whichever artifact is convenient, but the Power Ascended achievement counts only for the specific weapon.

The Hall of Shadows is the Rogue class order hall in Legion. It is located in the underground sewers of Dalaran, seized by the Uncrowned organization.

The Path to the Hall of Shadows

1. Head to Dalaran on the Broken Isles (use a hearthstone or a portal from a capital)
2. Descend into the Dalaran sewers through one of several entrances: from the Undercity, the Twilight Vineyards, or via the sewer hatch
3. Find the entrance to the Hall of Shadows — heavy double doors bearing the Uncrowned insignia
4. Enter the central hall, where the main order hall NPCs are located: Lilian Voss, Valeera Sanguinar, and Tao'shi
5. Zan Shivsproket stands in the same room as Valeera and Tao'shi

Vendor Coordinates

Note: there is also another NPC named Zan Shivsproket — a level 45 goblin in Winterspring (NPC ID 6777). That is not the Zan you need. For the Rogue class mount, look for Zan Shivsproket specifically in Dalaran's Hall of Shadows.

In addition to the base version and the coal-black tint, Zan Shivsproket sells two more specialized colorings. All three are sold at the same price — 1,000 Order Resources — and require Power Ascended on the corresponding artifact.

For the complete collection of four tints, you must earn Power Ascended on all three Rogue artifacts. The total cost of the three additional tints is 3,000 Order Resources.
