Mottled Drake

Overview

Mottled Drake is a rare flying mount from the World of Warcraft TCG set called Worldbreaker. In appearance it is a brown drake with a distinctive mottled coloring that uses the standard drake model known from the Emerald Drake and the Red Drake, but with a unique color scheme. The mount was added to the game in patch 4.0.3, and you can still redeem the code from the card today — Blizzard does not disable the promo-code system for older TCG sets.

There is only one way to obtain the drake: enter the 25-digit code from a physical or digital Mottled Drake card. The card itself was produced by Cryptozoic Entertainment, and the game was printed from 2006 to 2013. After the line was discontinued in August 2013, the cards became purely collectible items on the secondary market, so the price of the mount only keeps rising over time.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Prestigious rarity — the chance of pulling a Mottled Drake card from a Worldbreaker booster ranges from 1 in 242 to 1 in 264 packs. It was the rarest card in the set, and only a small fraction of players have it in their mount collections
  • Unique drake coloring — the drake model is used by about a dozen mounts (bronze, blue, emerald, red and others), but the mottled brown-speckled variation appears only on this one
  • A flying mount with adaptive speed — the Mottled Drake adapts to your maximum riding skill and in The War Within flies at speeds of up to +310%
  • Bind on use — the item does not become soulbound until first used, so the card and the scroll itself can be freely traded or sold. It is currently one of the few mounts in the game that is legally tradable
  • Available account-wide — once one character uses the scroll, the drake appears in the mount collection of all your characters, regardless of faction and class

How to Obtain

Obtaining the mount consists of two stages: you acquire the card itself (or its digital code) on the secondary market, and then you turn the 25-digit promo code into an in-game scroll through an NPC in Booty Bay.

  1. Find a Mottled Drake card. Two options will work — a physical card from the Worldbreaker set with an unscratched protective layer, or a digital code purchased from a reliable seller. If the card has already been activated, the code will not work
  2. Carefully scratch off the protective layer on the back of the card to reveal the 25-digit promo code. For the digital option, the code is sent as text
  3. Go to Blizzard's official promo-code activation page from a browser and enter the code. Choose the region, the realm and the character who will receive the scroll. Note: the code is bound to a single character and cannot be changed after activation
  4. After confirmation you will receive a second 25-digit code — it must be given to Landro Longshot directly in the game
  5. Fly to The Cape of Stranglethorn in Stranglethorn and head down to the wooden docks. Landro stands together with two bodyguards in bright cloaks — he is hard to miss
  6. Talk to him, choose the option "Redeem a Worldbreaker code" and then "Mottled Drake". After this, the Reins of the Mottled Drake scroll will arrive in your inventory
  7. Use the scroll to unlock the mount in your collection. If you want to keep it for selling or gifting — do not use the item, it is tradable until first use

The goblin occupies a separate platform on the lower tier of Booty Bay, next to the pier. He accepts codes from all promotional and rare TCG cards.

Where to Get a Card With a Code in 2026

The World of Warcraft TCG has been discontinued since August 23, 2013 — no new print runs are being made. So a card with a code can be found only through the secondary market. Current options:

  • Collector auction sites — eBay, TCGplayer, Cardmarket. Original unopened cards are sold here. Check carefully that the protective layer is untouched
  • Specialized TCG-loot sites — wowtcgloot.com, wowlootcards.com and the like. They sell either a physical card by mail or a digital code with instant delivery after verification
  • Russian-language code shops — dving.net, elfmoney.net, night-money.ru. They often offer digital delivery of the code within a few hours
  • Boosting services — Overgear, Blazing Boost, LepreStore. The contractor buys the card and activates it on your account as a turnkey service

The average price of a physical card as of April 2026 stays in the range of 600 – 800 US dollars; a digital code is usually slightly more expensive than a physical card because of the delivery speed. Always ask the seller for a video of the protective layer being scratched off in real time, otherwise there is a risk of receiving an already-used code.

How to Avoid Getting Scammed

  • Never pay by an unprotected transfer — use PayPal Goods & Services, Escrow or an equivalent
  • Check the seller's reputation and reviews from at least the past year
  • Keep the correspondence and photos/videos of the card before activation — this will come in handy in a dispute
  • Ideally, activate the code within an hour of purchase, without delay

Tips and Tricks

  • Decide in advance which character to activate on — after first use the mount becomes available to all your characters, but the scroll itself will arrive only to the one you specified on Blizzard's promo page. Choose a character on an active realm so you do not waste a transfer
  • Do not scratch the layer until you decide to activate it yourself — if you plan to gift the card or resell it in the future, an untouched layer increases its value by 1.5–2 times
  • Before flying to Booty Bay, check for free space in your inventory — the scroll takes up one slot, and Landro will not hand it over if your bags are full
  • Keep the bind-on-use in mind — the Reins of the Mottled Drake can be put up at auction and exchanged for in-game gold if that path interests you. In that case, never open the item in your inventory
  • Save the second 25-digit code separately — if you accidentally lose the scroll before use or it disappears due to an error, Blizzard support can restore it only if you have this code
  • If the code is not accepted on Blizzard's promo page — check the region. TCG codes are tied to regional servers (EU, US, KR, CN, TW). You cannot activate a European code on an American account
  • It is not worth buying the card for quick profit — the in-game market price of the mount on most realms is much lower than the real cost of the card. The purchase makes sense precisely for the sake of the mount itself in your collection
