Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle
Overview
Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle is a ground mount shaped like a massive red dragon turtle that first appeared in the Mists of Pandaria expansion and remains relevant in Midnight (2026). The mount is a pandaren racial means of transport that becomes available to members of other races once they reach Exalted reputation with the corresponding pandaren faction.
It is important to understand the difference between two similar items:
Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle and
Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle. Both share the same name, "Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle," but they are different in-game items. Version 91007, the one covered in this guide, is the variant for non-pandaren Horde players, tied to reputation with the Huojin Pandaren. In other words, if you play, for example, an orc, a tauren or a blood elf and want to ride this unhurried but charismatic reptile, this is the item you need.
Visually, the mount is a squat turtle with a red shell covered in draconic scaly patterns and a long crest running down its back. Its movement animation is deliberately heavy and measured — this underscores the spirit of pandaren culture, where no one is ever in a hurry.
Why You Want This Mount
The dragon turtle is one of the most recognizable mounts in any mount hunter's collection. Here are a few reasons to add it to your stable.
- Unique silhouette. On the battlefields of Azeroth you rarely see players riding turtles, especially red ones. You will definitely stand out.
- Cultural belonging. Dragon turtles are the traditional transport of the pandaren, and owning such a mount underscores respect for pandaren culture and the history of the Huojin alliance with the Horde.
- Closing out achievements. The mount counts toward the Lord of the Reins achievement and other collection goals based on the number of mounts gathered.
- Low price. Once you reach Exalted, the mount itself costs just 1 gold — likely the cheapest turtle in the entire game.
- A matched collection. The Huojin range includes several dragon turtle color variants at once, and the red one is among the most striking.
Requirements and How to Get There
To buy the mount on a non-pandaren Horde character, you need to meet a number of conditions. At level 80 in The War Within none of this is a problem anymore, but it is important not to miss the details.
- Character level: 1+, but the most convenient way to farm reputation is to ride into Pandaria at level 80.
- Riding skill:
Apprentice Riding (60% speed). The mount is ground-based and will not fly. - Faction: Horde.
- Race: any Horde race except pandaren (pandaren buy their version with no reputation requirement).
- Reputation: Exalted with the Huojin Pandaren.
- Cost: 1 gold.
To reach the vendor, fly to Orgrimmar and head for the Valley of Honor — the pandaren camp is located in the northeastern part of the district, near the training grounds.

Step-by-Step Guide
The process of obtaining the mount comes down to farming reputation with the Huojin to Exalted and buying the reins. Here is the detailed routine.
- Prepare your character. Any non-pandaren Horde character of level 10+ can begin grinding reputation, but it is most efficient to do so at level 80, when Pandaria's monsters die in a single hit.
- Fly to Pandaria. From Orgrimmar, use the portal to the Vale of Eternal Blossoms or to the Jade Forest. If the portal is unavailable, drop by the Hall of Explorers in Darnassus — no, that is the Alliance; for the Horde you need the portal room near the Orgrimmar gates, or travel through the Eastern Kingdoms by ship.
- Grind reputation through Pandaria quests. The most efficient quest chains are in The Jade Forest, the Valley of the Four Winds and Kun-Lai Summit. For every Pandaria quest you complete, you gain reputation with your side's pandaren faction.
- Buy a pandaren commendation. Upon reaching Revered with the Huojin, the faction quartermasters offer the
Grand Commendation of the Tillers, which doubles Huojin reputation gained on all characters of your account. Activate it before the main grind. - Top up reputation through work orders and dailies. In Orgrimmar, the pandaren camp in the Valley of Honor occasionally hands out pandaren work orders and events — they grant a reputation boost. Daily quests in Pandaria at the hubs of the relevant zones work as well.
- Reach Exalted. In total you need 42,000 reputation points between Friendly and Exalted. With a commendation and active farming, that is 3–5 evenings.
- Talk to Turtle Tamer Odai. Find the NPC in Orgrimmar's Valley of Honor, open his trade window and buy the
Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle for 1 gold. - Use the item. Right-click it — the mount will be added to your collection and become available to all Horde characters of the appropriate level who have learned riding.
Farming Optimization
Huojin reputation does not fall from the sky, but with a smart approach the path to Exalted can be greatly sped up.
- Commendation first. Do not start serious farming before you buy and activate the commendation. Without it you will spend twice as much time.
- By zone batches. Run Pandaria's story lines whole zones at a time, without hopping between locations. That way you collect all the bonus quests along the way and do not waste time on flights.
- Dailies at Kun-Lai. If the main Pandaria quests are already done, locations like Kun-Lai Summit and the Tillers hub provide a steady stream of reputation through dailies.
- Group farming of Pandaria events. Events like the mantid invasion in the Townlong Steppes grant a powerful reputation boost and good loot.
- Do not spread out onto the Tushui. Remember that the Tushui Pandaren are Alliance. On an orc character you will not earn their reputation and you will not be able to buy the 91007 reins from Odai without the Huojin.
- Buy all colors at once. Since you have reached Exalted, it makes sense to buy all the dragon turtle color variants from Odai at once — they all cost 1 gold each and will fill up most of the Lord of the Reins achievement.
Tips
1
Check your collection before buying. Open the mount window (default hotkey Shift+P) and make sure you do not already have the red dragon turtle — players sometimes forget that they already obtained this mount on another character.
2
The account is shared. Once you activate the item, the mount becomes available to all your Horde characters, so you will not have to grind reputation a second time on an alt.
3
If you play a Horde pandaren — you do not need 91007. Pandaren buy their racial dragon turtle with no reputation requirement, and your item ID will be different (see
Reins of the Red Dragon Turtle).
4
The riding skill matters. If you have not yet learned riding, Odai will still sell you the mount, but you will not be able to ride it until you learn the appropriate skill from any riding trainer.
5
Time it with weekend events. TWW periodically activates a "Pandaria Week" bonus or similar events with accelerated reputation — farming the Huojin during such periods is noticeably more rewarding.
6
Do not confuse it with the Great Red Dragon Turtle. There is a larger, more imposing version, the
Reins of the Great Red Dragon Turtle, which is sold separately and is often confused with the regular one in discussions.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
