Reins of the Great Purple Dragon Turtle
Reins of the Great Purple Dragon Turtle
Overview
Reins of the Great Purple Dragon Turtle is a ground mount added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion that remains a relevant collector's goal in The War Within (patch 11.1, year 2026). It is the epic dragon turtle variant in a purple hue, with a larger model compared to the regular version. The mount is sold by a pandaren vendor and is one of twelve dragon turtles available through reputation with the pandaren factions.
An important detail about this particular item: item=91015 is the Horde version. It is sold by Turtlemaster Odai in Orgrimmar. The Alliance has a paired item,
Reins of the Great Purple Dragon Turtle (item=87805), sold by Old Whitenose in Stormwind. The mounts are visually identical, but the faction binding is determined by which vendor you bought it from.
Why You Want This Mount
- A rare and memorable model. The dragon turtle is one of the most unusual ground mounts in the game: a massive creature with a shell and horns that you won't confuse with the typical wolves or horses.
- Collector value. It is part of a set of 12 dragon turtles (6 regular and 6 "great" ones) that count toward mount-collecting achievements and titles such as "Keeper of the Reins."
- Accessible at level 80. The requirements are minimal: the 10 gold price is no obstacle for a level 80 character in TWW, so the main investment is just the reputation.
- Shows off your Horde allegiance. Buying specifically from Turtlemaster Odai is an element of a Horde character's roleplay identity.
Requirements and How to Get There
To buy item=91015 from Turtlemaster Odai, you need:
- A character of the Horde faction (any race except pandaren — a special rule applies to pandaren, see below).
- Revered reputation with the Huojin faction.
- A riding skill — Apprentice Riding (rank 1) is enough.
- 10 gold in your pocket.
- A trip to Orgrimmar and knowing your way around the Valley of Honor.
Horde pandaren can buy the mount with no reputation requirement — simply being of that race is enough. For the other Horde races (orcs, trolls, tauren, undead, blood elves, goblins, as well as all Horde allied races) you will have to grind the Huojin up to Revered.

Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1. Choose your character
Decide which character you will farm the reputation on. The fastest path is if you already have a Horde hero who played in MoP or Pandaria Remix and who has the Huojin already raised to Revered. Check your reputation status in the reputation interface (default key — "U", on the "Reputation" tab, "Pandaria" section).
Step 2. Raise your Huojin reputation (if needed)
In 2026, The War Within offers several working ways to top off your Huojin standing to Revered:
- Pandaren daily quests in the Valley of the Four Winds and the Jade Forest at the pandaren camps (legacy Mists of Pandaria content).
- The Tabard of Orgrimmar, worn while running dungeons and clearing packs in level 10–50 Pandaria zones, redirects the reputation you earn to the Huojin.
- Pandaria Remix content (if it is active on your realm/season) gives accelerated reputation gain.
- Items that grant reputation experience, plus race/guild buffs for +10% reputation.
For a level 80 character, the legacy quests in Pandaria are completed almost instantly, so the main source is daily quests and clearing dungeons.
Step 3. Fly to Orgrimmar
Use your Orgrimmar hearthstone, a portal from your class hall/Expedition HQ, or any other fast travel method. If you have a Mage Teleport or a summoning scroll set up — that's even faster.
Step 4. Find Turtlemaster Odai
Head to the Valley of Honor — the eastern part of Orgrimmar. The pandaren camp is located by the water near the monk trainer Ji Firepaw. Turtlemaster Odai stands by the shore alongside the other pandaren mentors. On the minimap they are shown with a vendor icon.
Step 5. Buy the mount
Open the dialogue with Odai and select the goods tab. In the list, among the dozen dragon turtles, find the
Reins of the Great Purple Dragon Turtle (a purple turtle icon, labeled "Epic"). Click "Buy" and pay 10 gold. The mount is automatically added to your collection and becomes available to all characters on your account.
Step 6. Summon the mount
Open the mount collection (Shift+P → "Mounts" tab), find the mount in the Pandaria category, and summon it. Make sure you are in a zone where ground mounts are allowed.
Farming Optimization
- Buy the whole series at once. If you're going to Odai for a single dragon turtle, grab all 12 colors at once — the reputation is already earned, and each one costs 1 or 10 gold. It's an instant boost to your collection.
- A Horde pandaren is a cheat code. If you have a low-level Horde pandaren, you can buy the mount on them with no reputation, and it becomes available to your entire account. This saves dozens of hours of grinding.
- Pairing with Tushui. If you also have an Alliance character Revered with the Tushui, buy item=87805 from Old Whitenose — it gives the same model, but the item will appear as a separate entry in your collection for record-keeping.
- Combine it with other Pandaria goals. While you farm the Huojin, you simultaneously progress zone achievements, explorer titles, and related mounts such as the Crimson Cloud Serpent.
- Watch for bonuses. Blizzard periodically enables bonus weeks with accelerated legacy reputation gain — during such weeks Revered is reached significantly faster.
Tips
1
Don't confuse the two variants: item=91015 (Horde, Odai) and item=87805 (Alliance, Old Whitenose). The model is the same, but for collectors who keep strict records by ID, these are two different items.
2
The character level for the purchase doesn't matter — any level with the "Apprentice Riding" skill is enough.
3
Check whether you already have the mount in your collection before buying. If any character on your account has ever learned this item, the mount is already yours.
4
If you play a Horde allied race or have just created a Horde pandaren, keep in mind that some allied races start with no Huojin reputation, while a pandaren receives it automatically as part of their racial start.
5
Keep a
Scroll of Return to Orgrimmar or a hearthstone set to the capital on hand — it greatly speeds up the visit to the vendor once your reputation finally reaches the goal.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
