Reins of the Golden Primal Direhorn

Overview

Reins of the Golden Primal Direhorn is an epic-quality ground mount added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion (patch 5.2 "The Thunder King"). It is a massive golden direhorn clad in sturdy armor, once ridden into battle by the Zandalari trolls. The mount is available only to Alliance players; the Horde has an equivalent — Reins of the Crimson Primal Direhorn.

The mount is account-bound, so you only need to farm it once on any Alliance character — every future and already-created character on that account will receive it automatically.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Collection value. A classic ground mount from the MoP era, with a recognizable silhouette and a rare color.
  • Achievements. It counts toward the "Mountain o' Mounts", "Stable Keeper" achievements and the larger cumulative achievements for the number of mounts.
  • Alliance exclusivity. Horde players cannot buy it directly — when you switch faction, the item turns into the crimson variant.
  • Affordable price. At level 80 in 2026, 3000 gold is a few minutes of farming, and Kirin Tor Offensive reputation can be earned in a reasonable amount of time on a max-level character.

Requirements and How to Get There

  • Character level: 30+ for the riding skill and access to Pandaria (in 2026 the current cap is 80, TWW Season 2, patch 11.1).
  • Faction: Alliance only.
  • Reputation: Revered with the Kirin Tor Offensive faction.
  • Gold: 3000 (before reputation discounts and guild bonuses; with the maximum discount the price drops to roughly 2400).
  • Location: Isle of Thunder, Violet Rise.
  • How to get there: from Stormwind, fly to the Shrine of Seven Stars on Kun-Lai Summit, then take a portal or ship to the Isle of Thunder. At level 80, all of Pandaria is unlocked, and a direct teleport is available through the Traveler's system or the portal rooms.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Unlock the Isle of Thunder. At level 80 the zone is fully accessible, but if you haven't visited in a while, pick up the introductory quest chain from Vol'jin/Jaina in Stormwind or on Kun-Lai Summit. It opens the staging area and the daily quests.
  2. Build the Kirin Tor Offensive staging area. Complete the starting story quests on the Isle of Thunder — they open the outpost with daily quests and the faction quartermaster.
  3. Farm reputation with daily quests. Up to 12 PvE quests are available per day, which together grant about 1850 reputation. Going from Neutral to Revered takes roughly 2–3 weeks of daily play; with active farming via the scenario and chests, 10–14 days.
  4. Use the "Treasures of the Thunder King" scenario. It awards Kirin Tor Offensive Insignia, which are turned in to the quartermaster: 1 insignia = 25 reputation, and 10 lesser insignia combine into a greater one worth 250 reputation.
  5. Collect Tattered Historical Parchments. They drop from chests in the scenario and from mobs on the island and are converted into reputation insignia.
  6. Track your progress. Open the reputation panel (default key — U) and watch the Kirin Tor Offensive bar.
  7. Buy the mount. Once you reach Revered, fly to Violet Rise to Hiren Loresong and buy the Reins of the Golden Primal Direhorn for 3000 gold.
  8. Use the item from your bags. After using it, the mount is added to your collection and becomes available to all Alliance characters on the account.

Farm Optimization

  • Choose PvE dailies. They grant more reputation than the PvP alternatives and are completed faster solo.
  • Run the scenario every day. "Treasures of the Thunder King" is limited to once per day, but it grants both insignia and a chance at rare rewards.
  • Check the chests on the island. Ancient Mogu chests and caches are scattered across the Isle of Thunder and contain parchments and insignia.
  • Wear the Kirin Tor Offensive Tabard. This cloak reward from the early reputation levels increases the reputation you earn.
  • Account for the guild bonus. The guild achievement "Working as a Team" and the +10% reputation perk will speed up the farm.
  • Save up gold in advance. In 2026, 3000 gold is a symbolic sum, but on a fresh character it is easy to gather by selling resources from the island or by ordering cheap crafts.

Tips

1

If you don't specifically need the golden color, remember: on the Isle of Giants, Oondasta drops other direhorn colors, and the Zandalari Warbringers drop four more rare colors. But the golden direhorn is a guaranteed purchase, with no RNG.

2

Save all your Kirin Tor Offensive Insignia until the reputation gain from dailies slows down (usually after Friendly), and turn them in during the stages with a large remaining gap to Revered.

3

Don't sell the Tattered Historical Parchments on the auction house — they're needed for conversion into insignia.

4

Bring along invited friends to the Isle of Thunder: some elite mobs are killed more efficiently in a group, and reputation from kills stacks.

5

Make sure your character has the Pandaria adventure storyline active — otherwise the quests on the island won't appear.

6

After your purchase, don't forget to stop by the quartermaster again: he sells toys, recipes and other collectible odds and ends of the faction.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
