Voidtalon of the Dark Star

Overview

Voidtalon of the Dark Star is an epic flying mount added in patch 6.1 of Warlords of Draenor. Visually it is a purple void raven with a dark-spark effect, a color variant of Aliz Razor's Felflame. The

mount is account-bound and appears in all collections after the first acquisition. Obtaining it is not tied to raids or keys — the raven comes only from an egg that lies inside the Edge of Reality mini-scenario. The entrance there is opened by a rare portal that spawns by hand in one of 28 points on the Draenor map.

The drop from the egg is guaranteed, but the chance of catching the portal itself and being first is minimal, which is why the mount is considered one of the most prestigious in the game.

Why get the Voidtalon of the Dark Star

The main reason is status. Owners of the raven on any server are few, and its appearance in a city invariably draws attention.

Secondly, it is one of the most aesthetic flying mounts: the dark-purple model with a void effect pairs perfectly with the transmogs of mages, warlocks and shadow priests, as well as with Void-themed sets.

Thirdly, the mount counts toward the overall achievements for the number of mounts collected, which directly unlocks rewards such as the Hand of the Champion and other collector trophies.

Finally, the hunt itself is a unique experience: you plot a route, coordinate with your guild, set up addons and learn to read server timers.

Requirements

Formally a level 10 character and the Apprentice Riding skill are required, but for comfortable farming it is better to play at level 90 with Draenor unlocked and flight over Draenor unlocked. Flying is critical, because the spawn points are spread widely and the portal lives about 15 minutes.

You absolutely need an addon that alerts you when a portal appears — for example, HandyNotes: Draenor Treasures with the Edge of Reality portals add-on, SilverDragon or VoidtalonFinder.

Additionally, TomTom is useful for quick travel by coordinates, along with a guild or community channel where members share screenshots of spawns. A character that has already obtained the mount no longer sees the portals, so use characters without the raven for farming.

Source

The only source of the mount is the Voidtalon egg lying inside the Edge of Reality mini-scenario. The entrance is a portal that spawns randomly in one of 28 points on the Draenor map. Below are the known facts about the spawns.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Make sure the character does not own the mount: a registered raven makes the portals invisible to that hero.
  2. Install the VoidtalonFinder or HandyNotes addon with the spawn-point map and enable audio alerts.
  3. Choose a base zone: experienced hunters recommend Shadowmoon Valley — it has five spawn points and does not reset when idle.
  4. Each day after the server restart (in Europe around 5:00 Central European Time, in the Americas around 8:00 Pacific Time) portals can appear no earlier than 48 hours after the reset, so plan your schedule accordingly.
  5. Fly between spawn points along the addon's route every 30–60 minutes: the portal lasts about 15 minutes before despawning.
  6. As soon as you hear the signal, fly to the marker as fast as possible, click the portal and enter the Edge of Reality scenario.
  7. Inside, pick up the Voidtalon egg — the mount will be learned automatically. If a glitch occurs and the egg is not counted, the item will arrive by mail.
  8. Use guild chat and community channels: usually someone is already monitoring the portals, and trading tips speeds up the hunt.

Optimizing runs

To increase your chances, keep several characters in different server RP groups — each group has its own phases and its own spawn timer. The optimal scheme: 3–4 alts all left in Shadowmoon Valley at spawn points, and one level-90 "roamer" to sweep the remaining zones after the timer triggers.

Keep in mind that after someone takes the mount on a server, the next portal will appear at minimum 8 hours later, and after a despawn without a click — at minimum 2 hours later, usually 2–4 hours. Do not keep a character in Tanaan Jungle or Ashran — portals do not appear there. In parallel you can farm the Draenor Treasure Chest and close the remaining zone achievements so the waiting time is not wasted.
