Voidtalon of the Dark Star
Overview

Voidtalon of the Dark Star is an epic flying mount added in patch 6.1 of Warlords of Draenor. Visually it is a purple void raven with a dark-spark effect, a color variant of the Flametalon of Alysrazor. The mount is account-bound and appears in every collection after the first time you obtain it. Getting it has nothing to do with raids or keystones — the raven comes only from an egg that lies inside the Edge of Reality mini-scenario. The entrance is opened by a rare portal that appears by hand in one of 28 points on the map of Draenor.
The egg drop is guaranteed, but the chance to catch the portal itself and be the first to it is minimal, which is why the mount is considered one of the most prestigious in the game.
Why Get the Voidtalon of the Dark Star
The main reason is status. Owners of the raven are few on any realm, and its appearance in a city always draws attention.
Second, it is one of the most aesthetic flying mounts: the dark-purple model with the void effect goes perfectly with the transmogs of mages, warlocks and shadow priests, as well as with Void sets.
Third, the mount counts toward the general achievements for the number of mounts collected, which directly unlocks rewards such as the Hand of the Champion and other collector trophies.
Finally, the hunt itself is a unique experience: you plan a route, coordinate with your guild, set up addons and learn to read the realm timers.
Requirements
Formally you need a level 10 character and the Apprentice Riding skill, but for comfortable farming it is better to play at level 90 with Draenor opened and flying over Draenor unlocked. Flight is critical, because the spawn points are spread out widely and the portal lives for about 15 minutes.
You will absolutely need an addon that alerts you when a portal appears — for example, HandyNotes: Draenor Treasures with the Edge of Reality portal plugin, SilverDragon or VoidtalonFinder.
In addition, TomTom is useful for quick travel to coordinates, along with a guild or community channel where members share screenshots of spawns. A character that has already obtained the mount can no longer see the portals, so use characters without the raven for farming.
Source
The only source of the mount is the Voidtalon Egg, lying inside the Edge of Reality mini-scenario. The entrance is a portal that randomly appears in one of 28 points on the map of Draenor. The known facts about the spawns are summarized below.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Make sure your character does not own the mount: a counted raven makes the portals invisible to that hero.
- Install the VoidtalonFinder or HandyNotes addon with a map of the spawn points and enable audio alerts.
- Choose a base zone: experienced hunters recommend Shadowmoon Valley — it has five spawn points and does not reset while idle.
- Every day after the realm restart (in Europe around 5:00 Central European Time, in the Americas around 8:00 Pacific Time) the portals may appear no sooner than 48 hours after the reset, so plan your schedule.
- Fly between the spawn points along the addon's route every 30–60 minutes: the portal holds for about 15 minutes before despawning.
- As soon as you hear the signal, fly to the marker as fast as possible, click the portal and enter the Edge of Reality scenario.
- Inside, pick up the Voidtalon Egg — the mount is learned automatically. If something glitches and the egg is not credited, the item will arrive in the mail.
- Use guild chat and community channels: usually someone is already monitoring the portals, and trading tips speeds up the hunt.
Optimizing Your Runs
To increase your chances, keep several characters in different realm RP groups — each group has its own phases and its own spawn timer. The optimal setup: 3–4 alts, all left in Shadowmoon Valley at the spawn points, plus one level 90 "roamer" to sweep the other zones after the timer triggers.
Keep in mind that after someone takes the mount on a realm the next portal appears in at least 8 hours, and after a despawn without a click — in at least 2 hours, usually 2–4 hours. Do not keep your character in the Tanaan Jungle or Ashran — portals do not appear there. In parallel you can farm the Draenor Treasure Chest and close out the remaining zone achievements so your waiting time is not wasted.
