Overview

Reins of the Green Primal Raptor

Reins of the Green Primal Raptor is a ground mount in the form of a mighty emerald raptor, added in patch 5.2 "The Thunder King" during the Mists of Pandaria era. You don't get the mount directly from a boss or a vendor, but through a unique incubation mechanic: you find a Primal Egg on the Isle of Giants, carry it in your bag for three days, and after it turns into a Cracked Primal Egg you open it, receiving one of three raptor colors — green, black, or red.

Why you want this mount

  • A legendary silhouette. The green raptor looks like a living predator from the age of the Mogu: muscular, with a bright leafy coloring and a distinctive gait.
  • Rarity in the eyes of others. Spotting a rider on a green raptor in current zones is rare, so you instantly stand out in the capitals.
  • Pure solo content. You don't wait for anyone, you don't gather a raid, you don't depend on difficulty — just you, the island, and the dinosaurs.
  • A boost to your collection. The mount counts toward achievements for the number of mounts owned.

Requirements and how to get there

To make the farm enjoyable, you'll need:

  • A level 90 character with any seasonal gear — even fresh ilvl is enough; the dinosaurs at level 90 die in a few hits.
  • A regular riding skill so you can move across the island on the ground.
  • A free bag slot. The egg is unique: while you're carrying it, a second one won't drop, and you have to store it for three real days.
  • Access to Pandaria. Via the portal network from the capitals or from the Timeless Isle.
  • How to get there: The Isle of Giants lies north of the Kun-Lai Summit. Fly to the northern coast of Kun-Lai (for example, to Zouchin) and head out on a flying mount due north — the island is shown on the map as a separate landmass. An alternative is the portal from the Timeless Isle, if you have it unlocked.

Important: the raptor color from the cracked egg drops randomly, and the same color can come up several times in a row. To collect all three colors, a collector needs 5–9 eggs on average.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1. Prepare your character

  1. Make sure your hero is level 90 and has at least basic seasonal gear — that's more than enough for the dinosaurs of the Isle of Giants.
  2. Free up a bag slot for the egg: it will occupy it for three days and must not accidentally end up in the guild bank or the warehouse.
  3. Take a hearthstone bound to any quick-access hub with you — the farm lasts from one to several hours, and it's convenient to take breaks.

Step 2. Get to the Isle of Giants

  1. Travel to Pandaria via the portal network (from Stormwind, Orgrimmar, or the Timeless Isle).
  2. Fly to the north of the Kun-Lai Summit — the Zouchin or Binan flight point will do.
  3. Summon a flying mount and fly due north over the ocean. After a minute you'll see the misty landmass of the Isle of Giants.

Step 3. Choose a farming zone

  1. At level 90 it's most convenient to circle between the Primal Raptors and Primal Devilsaurs — they're large, and the egg chance from them is higher.
  2. A typical route: the central plain of the island → the northwestern coast → the southern hill. All three zones swarm with elites that respawn in 1–2 minutes.
  3. If you wish, gather Mighty Bones along the way — they drop from almost every mob and are needed for the quests of Ayani the Eviscerator.

Step 4. Farm until your first egg

  1. Kill the dinosaurs one after another without skipping large specimens. Check each one for loot — the egg icon stands out with a characteristic green gradient.
  2. A single Primal Egg takes 30–90 minutes of active farming on average, depending on RNG.
  3. As soon as an egg drops, you can stop farming: the item's uniqueness won't let you pick up a second one until the first one hatches.

Step 5. Wait for incubation

  1. Leave the egg in your bag and do whatever you like in the game: it "matures" in real time, even when you're offline.
  2. After three real days the egg will turn into a Cracked Primal Egg.
  3. Use the item — with a 100% guarantee you'll receive one of three raptors: black, red, or green.

Step 6. Repeat if necessary

  1. If a different color dropped instead of green — don't be upset, you still got a mount for your collection.
  2. Return to the island and farm the next egg. After the first time the process goes faster: you already know the optimal route.
  3. To get specifically the green one, you'll need 2–4 eggs on average, and in a pessimistic scenario — up to 8–10.

Farm optimization

  • Hit only the large ones. The young give a lower egg chance and take just as much time — at level 90 this isn't critical for damage, but it strongly affects your eggs-per-hour KPI.
  • Keep only one egg in your bag. The item is unique, so while you have an egg, the next one won't drop — use the waiting time on other mounts, old-world raids, or professions.
  • Several characters — several eggs at once. The egg is unique per character, so three heroes can carry three eggs in parallel and get three mounts by the same deadline.
  • Turn off War Mode. There are almost no competitors on the island, and turning it off minimizes the chance of a skirmish.
  • Listen to podcasts. The farm is monotonous but relaxing: at level 80 the mobs die in one or two hits, and your attention is only needed for the loot.

Tips

1

After the first incubation, add a reminder to your calendar: if the egg has matured and you forgot to open it, you'll still get the mount, but you'll lose a day on the next cycle.

2

Don't put the egg in the warehouse or the guild bank — the incubation timer keeps running only while it's in your character's bag.

3

If the ability_mount_raptorReins of the Green Primal Raptor have already dropped, don't throw away the remaining eggs: the extra colors go into your account-wide collection and close out two "neighboring" mount achievements at once.

4

Remember that the raptor is strictly a ground mount: you can't fly on it in the old world, even with an upgraded riding skill.

5

Add the mount to your favorites in the collection so it comes up more often with the random ground-mount button — the green raptor looks great in the forest zones of TWW.
