Overview

Black Primal Raptor

Game iconBlack Primal Raptor is a ground mount in the form of a coal-black dinosaur raptor, added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion. This raptor remains one of the most striking raptors in the game: its grim silhouette, bony growths and signature predator stance make it stand out even next to much newer mounts. =

The mount is available to both factions and is account-bound, so you only need to obtain it on a single character — it instantly becomes available to all of your heroes.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rare and recognizable look. The black raptor is one of three "primal raptor" variations and is still rarely seen in the capitals.
  • Collection value. It counts toward mount-collecting achievements and other collection milestones.
  • Availability. Unlike many old mounts, there is no tie to a raid or seasonal events here — you can farm it at any time.

Requirements and How to Get There

To make the farm enjoyable, you will need:

  • A level 90 character with any gear from the current season — even fresh ilvl is enough, the dinosaurs die in a few hits at level 90.
  • Riding skill at the normal level, so you can travel across the island on the ground.
  • A free bag slot. The egg is unique: while it is in your bags, a second one will not drop, and you need to keep it for three real-life days.
  • Access to Pandaria. Via the portal network from the capitals or from the Timeless Isle.
  • How to get there: the Isle of Giants is located north of Kun-Lai Summit. Fly to the northern coast of Kun-Lai (for example, to Zouchin Village) and ride a flying mount due north — the island appears as a separate landmass on the map. An alternative is the portal from the Timeless Isle, if you have it unlocked.

Important: the color of the raptor from the cracked egg is random, and the same color can come up several times in a row. To collect all three colors, a collector needs an average of 5–9 eggs.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Prepare your character

  1. Make sure your hero is level 90 and has at least basic seasonal gear — that is more than enough for the dinosaurs of the Isle of Giants.
  2. Free up a bag slot for the egg: it will occupy the slot for three days and must not accidentally end up in the guild bank or your storage.
  3. Bring a hearthstone set to any quick-access hub — the farm lasts from one to several hours, so taking breaks is convenient.

Step 2. Get to the Isle of Giants

  1. Travel to Pandaria via the portal network (from Stormwind, Orgrimmar or the Timeless Isle).
  2. Fly to the north of Kun-Lai Summit — the Zouchin Village or Binan Village flight point will do.
  3. Summon a flying mount and fly due north over the ocean. After a minute you will see the misty landmass of the Isle of Giants.

Step 3. Choose a farming zone

  1. At level 90 it is most convenient to circle between the Primal Devilsaurs and Primal Direhorns — they are large, and the egg chance from them is higher.
  2. A typical route: the central plain of the island → the northwestern coast → the southern hill. All three zones are teeming with elites that respawn in 1–2 minutes.
  3. If you wish, collect Game iconGiant Dinosaur Bones along the way — they drop from almost every mob and are needed for Ku'ma's quests.

Step 4. Farm until your first egg

  1. Kill dinosaurs one after another, not skipping the large specimens. Check each one for loot — the egg icon stands out with its distinctive green gradient.
  2. On average it takes 30–90 minutes of active farming to get one Game iconPrimal Egg, depending on RNG.
  3. As soon as an egg drops, you can stop farming: the item's uniqueness will not let you pick up a second one until the first one hatches.

Step 5. Wait for incubation

  1. Leave the egg in your bags and do whatever you like in the game: it "matures" in real time, even while you are offline.
  2. After three real-life days the egg turns into a Game iconCracked Primal Egg.
  3. Use the item — with a 100% guarantee you will get one of three raptors: black, red or green.

Step 6. Repeat if necessary

  1. If a different color drops instead of black, don't be upset — you still added a mount to your collection.
  2. Return to the island and farm the next egg. The process goes faster after the first time: you already know the optimal route.
  3. To get specifically the black one, you need an average of 2–4 eggs, in a pessimistic scenario up to 8–10.

Farming Optimization

  • Hit only the large ones. Juveniles give a lower egg chance and take just as much time — at level 90 this is not critical in terms of damage, but it strongly affects your eggs-per-hour KPI.
  • Keep only one egg in your bags. The item is unique, so while the egg is with you the next one won't drop — use the waiting time for other mounts, old-world raids or professions.
  • Several characters — several eggs at once. The egg is unique per character, so three heroes can carry three eggs in parallel and get three mounts on the same timer.
  • Turn off War Mode. There are almost no competitors on the island, and turning it off minimizes the chance of a skirmish.
  • Listen to podcasts. The farm is monotonous but relaxing: mobs go down in one or two hits, and you only need to pay attention to the loot.

Tips

1

After the first incubation, add a reminder to your calendar: if the egg has matured and you forgot to open it, you still get the mount, but you lose a day on the next cycle.

2

Do not put the egg in your storage or the guild bank — the incubation timer only keeps running in the character's bags.

3

If the ability_mount_raptor_blackReins of the Black Primal Raptor have already dropped, don't throw away the other eggs: the extra colors go into the account-wide collection and close two "neighboring" mount achievements at once.

4

Remember that the raptor is strictly a ground mount: you cannot fly on it in the old world, even with a maxed-out riding skill.

5

Add the mount to your collection favorites so it appears more often from the random ground mount button — the green raptor looks great in the forest locations of TWW.
